Famous men and surrogacy

OK, so this is not to bash the specific person involved but last night I was heading to bed and a story came up on my phone - a person from Westlife was announcing the birth of their baby - through surrogacy (he is gay) and showed a pic of him, his boyfriend and the baby - there was no mother.

So, I totally lost it and poor DH had to listen to me rant for about an hour - but when, oh God, when, are we going to stand up and be counted and take back the rights of women and children?????

DH mentioned that there will always be women poor enough to agree to do this and I countered that you cannot sell a kidney (legally) or buy one so why should you be able to buy or sell a baby???????

BTW, DH agrees with me, but why do I feel I am the only person alive who is angry about this?

And I live in Wokesville (AKA Ireland) and I am worried that we are so keen to be woke and the most liberal place to be gay in the world, that we will soon legalise surrogacy or at least make it easy for people to legally buy a baby overseas and then take it home here. That is what the person was arguing for on his gushing post.

We also know that children have the drive to find out about their biological parent. We know that for people who have been adopted and those who have been born from sperm or embryo donors.

Whether a child also get this strong feeling toward to woman who carried them during the pregnancy, I dont know. it’s still a relatively new thing and we dont have enough information to say one way or the other.

I would be very careful about framing this issue as ‘making the child an orphan’ (the child will be living with their biological father).
It’s also worth remembering that Nowdays we also have children born from donor egg AND sperm donor so have no biological link with the people who are raising them as parents. If that is Ok (I assume because the woman has accrued the child??), the surely it should be ok too for the child to live with his biological father.

Just in case anyone else is looking at the consultation and struggling to understand quite what some of the questions are getting at here's a link to the WP guide womansplaceuk.org/2019/10/08/wpuk-submission-to-law-commission-consultation-on-surrogacy-reform/

Thanks OhHolyJesus

The issues around attachment to the mother aren't the same in egg and/or sperm donation. But the issues around a child's relationship with and knowledge of the full set of biological parents are. I think many of us who have experience of adoption within our families are painfully aware of how strong the drive is to fully know where we come from.

Bio parents and birth parents all matter to a child.

Biologically grown and belonging to birth mother, and bio parents all matter.

All an infant knows from conception is the byosy it belongs to, knows like its own, and most importantly feels safe with.

People used to believe you could sepaeattqins at birth without consequence. Those seem like the dark ages now though by comparison.

  • separate twins at birth

I mean treat infants like dolls, inanimate objects.
