Online if you want to take it. You translate the drag phrase.
How nice to see that those putting it together didn't think that "fishy" meaning a very feminine drag queen may be offensive....

*The first time I heard the word fishy used to describe women was by a gay colleague and said with a disgusted sneer.

Yes, I first came across this term in the early 1980's when I was talking to a newly 'ou't young gay man who had moved down to London from Dundee. I'd not been aware of it before - but it was definitely a term with negative connotations and was an expression of disgust at female genitalia.

Justhadathought · 04/10/2019 10:25

Just disturbingly malicious. He came across as someone who hated women

Absolutely! I used to go to the Vauxhall Tavern in the early days of 'Duckie' with my best friend ( male & gay) and found the humour nasty, wilfully offensive and totally unfunny. I always felt it barely disguised a distinct antipathy towards women/the female.

morons

Great example!

Good Feminist Current article, which mentions the comment by the male MC at Manchester Pride that the group of lesbian protestors at London Pride in 2018 should have been "dragged off by their saggy tits"

Gay men don't get a free pass on misogyny.

Is radfem an insult now?

Every day is a school day Grin

Sorry for formatting

SophoclesTheFox · 04/10/2019 10:38

Am tickled by use of ableist slur to call other people out on their “bigotry” 😂

Check your ableism and misogyny and the mote in your own eye, polly!

It’s not homophobic for a woman to object to the term”fish”.

Ereshkigal · 04/10/2019 10:40

Unsurprised that Mumsnet is full of radfems

Yes, on the feminist board of this primarily female centred forum we do actual feminism! Fancy that!

poorbuthappy · 04/10/2019 10:41

Excellent argument Petty - hang on a sec whilst we dismantle it and respond....

Oh wait, name calling, really all they have.

As you were.

Justhadathought · 04/10/2019 10:44

Unsurprised that Mumsnet is full of radfems and morons

Actually this board of Mumsnet is peopled by women ( & men) of all backgrounds and persuasions - and certainly not all would use the label 'rad fem' to describe themselves. Personally, don't identify with any label. I'm just me. I'm here because of the deep disrespect towards women that is inherent in the radical TRA agenda.

Ereshkigal · 04/10/2019 10:47

I feel there is an attempt to derail the thread from the feminist analysis of the term "fishy".

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 04/10/2019 11:49

I don't get this thread at all. It is so bloody obvious that 'fishy is offensive and that the BBC shouldn't have used it.

How bloody blinkered and dog-in-the-manger do you have to be to bother to turn up to argue this? Confused

Quaffy · 04/10/2019 12:06

The post from bob is brilliant.

WeeBisom · 04/10/2019 12:57

It’s pretty ludicrous to say that if you object to the word “fishy” you’re a bigot or a homophobe. I’m bisexual and hang out with lots of gay guys. A few years ago one of my good friends used the term “fishy” and I called him out on it. He argued with me for a bit, and it turned out he actually thought women smelled of fish. After I corrected him, he could see how offensive the term was and never used it again. I don’t see anything bigoted in this exchange.

Mac1990 · 04/10/2019 13:04

FYI - Feminism is not for women only. It's is about equality between all genders.

Am I allowed to Biscuit or is that against the rules now?

MadamBatty · 04/10/2019 13:08

& why aren’t fish called woman-y? Just musing

MockersthefeMANist · 04/10/2019 13:09

We live in an age of rampant presentism, but the future will surely look upon our faults with the usual mix of amusement and disgust we reserve for the past and its racism, misogyny, flares and shiny leggings.

It may be the case that RuPaul's Drag race and its ilk will be our Black & White Minstrel Show.

Mac1990 · 04/10/2019 13:15

Sharing these posts with my work colleagues, they think you're a crease

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 04/10/2019 13:23

Just going back to that definition from the RuPaul wiki..."Although the term is considered to be a compliment among Drag Queens, it is often considered to be an insult among non-drag women."

Or "women", as we're still commonly known.

Excellent post Bob.

That's nice. My budgie thinks you're a banana sundae. I blame the cuttlefi...millet.
