Boxing Scotland (on facebook)

We were extremely saddened to hear that on the morning of Friday 13 September 2019 Magdalen Berns passed away, surrounded by family. Before her cancer diagnosis in 2016 and diagnosis of gioblastoma in 2018, Magdalen had been an active member of the boxing community in Scotland.

Magdalen was a pioneer for both women's boxing and university boxing in Scotland, and she was a member of Scotland's first female boxing squad in 2011.

Magdalen initially represented the University of Edinburgh while training at Leith Victoria in 2009-2011 before moving on to Holyrood Boxing Gym in 2012. She was the first Scottish boxer to compete in, and win, the Haringey Box Cup in 2010 and the Golden Girl Championship in 2011. In 2011, Magdalen also won the British Universities Boxing Championships and boxed in the finals of the Scottish elite championships.

Most recently, Magdalen was a boxing coach for the University of Edinburgh. She has left a tremendous legacy for women's boxing in Scotland, and she will be missed.

Wow, I didn't know that about her.

RIP Magdalen

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 18/09/2019 16:17

Fearless, in so many different ways.

FamilyOfAliens · 18/09/2019 16:46

Interesting that this wasn’t the most widely known thing about Magdalen - she probably got on with it quietly and with no fanfare.

The exact opposite of the behaviour of her critics, actually.

Popchyk · 18/09/2019 16:49

Such a lovely tribute to her.

LangCleg · 18/09/2019 16:56

If anyone here still edits Wikipedia, this should be added. It will certainly add weight to objecting to the not famous enough deletion threat.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 18/09/2019 17:00

Wow!! I didn’t know this, amazing.

RIP Magdalen Flowers

MrsFogi · 18/09/2019 17:05

Wow I did not know this. I have liked the post on FB (in my own name because I now do not give a shit - I do not see why I should not post on FB about an amazing woman, I do not see why I should not re-post messages from Transgender Trend, Safe Schools Alliance and Fair Play for Women). I started doing this on the day of Magdalen's death and so far no one in RL has pushed back (and if they do I would be delighted to have a civilised discussion with them).

GrumpyGran8 · 18/09/2019 19:28

I've just added it to her disputed Wikipedia page. Let's see if that does anything to improve her notability rating!

BarbaraStrozzi · 18/09/2019 19:32

What a fantastic thing to find out about a fabulous woman.

Sexnotgender · 18/09/2019 19:33

Lovely tribute, I also had no idea.

She’s really a massive loss in so many ways.

Michelleoftheresistance · 18/09/2019 19:45

Wow that woman was one hell of a role model! I had no idea about this and am stunned all over again with how amazing she was. In so many varied ways.

Daughterofmabel · 18/09/2019 19:56

Wonderful

Germ1360 · 18/09/2019 21:06

Magdalen was awesome. So much respect for her.

LangCleg · 18/09/2019 22:13

Thank you so much GrumpyGran8 !

Was really glad to see wikipedia page now includes this, but then I saw this!

WtF?????????

I know wikipedia is notorious for allowing male contributors to work in gangs to delete or re-write entries on women, particularly femininsts. But how can they say this about Magdalen Berns.

Shame for them that they can't erase all the Twitter tributes, isn't it? A wonderful woman loved by many who will be missed by more people than have even noticed most of them exist.

stumbledin · 19/09/2019 00:25

Personally I am not that keen on the idea of boxing, but the fact that she obviously suceeded in a sport that not many women take part in you would think by the reactionary male standards of wikipediea would entitle her to an entry.

But from the day wikipedia started women have been having their entries edited on deleted by primary immature males with about as much experience of the world as other immature males who never leave their bedrooms.

OP posts:
Qcng · 19/09/2019 07:00

Why exactly do they want to delete the page (other than the obvious because she's a woman)?. On what grounds I mean?

Itallt0omuch · 19/09/2019 07:44

The boxing history certainly helps to explain why so many men were frightened of Magdalen!

TirisfalPumpkin · 19/09/2019 07:59

Huh! I wondered about the pic with medal on her sister’s charity fundraiser page.

What a remarkable woman.

ChattyLion · 19/09/2019 09:23

Magdalen Flowers
Wow. I didn’t know that about her. She was obviously one of those people that the more you know them, the more badass you realise they are.
Condolences to her family and friends and all who knew her IRL.

niceberg · 19/09/2019 10:29

Ha. Brilliant woman.

RIP Magdalen.

LangCleg · 19/09/2019 10:35

On what grounds I mean?

She was not sufficiently prominent.

However, even by Wikipedia's Woke Misogyny standards, being one of the first women to represent her country at a sport is noteworthy.

hoodathunkit · 19/09/2019 11:26

RIP Magdalen

A true inspiration

I strongly believe that all and any women who are able to should get themselves down to the local amateur boxing club (ABC) and get themselves fighting fit.

ABC's are traditionally cheap as chips finacially so are affordible to most women.

The expense is in terms of your time.

I have found it helpful and immensely healing to train in controlled violence with a friendly and supporting group of (mostly male) boxers who have encouraged me to hit them hard in the face. I suspect that many readers here will enjoy this experience.

Fighting skills are like condoms. It is better to have them and not not need them than to need them and not have them.

Boxing and other fighting skills also teach strategy, thinking whilst under fire and resilience.

Apologies for the digression and my thoughts are with Magdalen's friends and family at this difficult time

OhHolyJesus · 19/09/2019 11:42

On Julia Beck's general suggestion I joined a boxing club recently after years of not training. I feel bloody amazing, I really recommend it.

In fact I'll be using Wikipedia for my anger inspiration tonight and will thinking of Magdalen and her family.
