Boxing Scotland (on facebook)

We were extremely saddened to hear that on the morning of Friday 13 September 2019 Magdalen Berns passed away, surrounded by family. Before her cancer diagnosis in 2016 and diagnosis of gioblastoma in 2018, Magdalen had been an active member of the boxing community in Scotland.

Magdalen was a pioneer for both women's boxing and university boxing in Scotland, and she was a member of Scotland's first female boxing squad in 2011.

Magdalen initially represented the University of Edinburgh while training at Leith Victoria in 2009-2011 before moving on to Holyrood Boxing Gym in 2012. She was the first Scottish boxer to compete in, and win, the Haringey Box Cup in 2010 and the Golden Girl Championship in 2011. In 2011, Magdalen also won the British Universities Boxing Championships and boxed in the finals of the Scottish elite championships.

Most recently, Magdalen was a boxing coach for the University of Edinburgh. She has left a tremendous legacy for women's boxing in Scotland, and she will be missed.

Wow! I enjoyed reading that. RIP Magdalen.

Sorry to be a pain @GrumpyGran8 but are you about?

The boxing stuff has been taken out as from a "biased and partisan" source. But it's the official Facebook page of an official national boxing federation! It's the actual sports authority for the info!

Something potentially interesting here if someone can investigate it further. Boxing Scotland has a website as well as their Facebook site so might be worth seeing if there's anything there, from a cursory glance can't see anything but there must be records of competitions etc that will be acceptable to Wikipedia.

Here are the references I can find on the main Boxing Scotland website (although their official Facebook page is clearly neither biased nor partisan).

Boxing Scotland's website

I hadn't realised quite how bad wikipedia is for the erasure of women's history, but last year's winner of the Physics Nobel Prize had her wikipage deleted a few months before she was awarded the prize! Donna Strickland - Guardian link.

There's a lovely obituary for Magdalen here: camdennewjournal.com/article/magdalen-berns-vlogger-who-took-a-stand-for-womens-rights

stumbledin · 08/10/2019 19:07

Thanks for the link. A very touching tribute.

Shame that some unpleasnt male has posted a comment dismissing it saying it was obvious from her vlogs that she was nothing more than a common east end girl!!

Do you think Wikipedia will accept the Candem New Journal as a reliable source?
