Is twitter really deboosting?

Juells · 31/08/2019 16:20

Over the last week or so I've seen numerous people I follow saying that they're being deboosted. I just checked myself and it looks like my account is deboosted. I find it a bit hard to believe, though - I follow just 20 or 30 accounts, and have few followers, why would twitter bother deboosting my replies to tweets?

I'm wondering if this is some kind of scam, that when you use the so-called test it just tells everyone they're deboosted? Just for the fun of it Grin

I think the analysis is based on the last reply you made, not the sum total of all of your replies.

Twitter seems pretty fucked at the moment in general though, so it may just be a glitch.

Doyoumind · 31/08/2019 17:55

Aren't there claims that it's linked to those listed on terf blocker? I'm not sure that can really be true though. Are you blocked at all? You can be simply based on who you follow or like. I'm not blocked because I tend to lurk on Twitter and I search for people rather than following officially so it allows me to see everything.

OhGodWhatTheHellNow · 31/08/2019 18:03

You can enter other user names in to see if you get the same result, there has been some experimentation:

Oh, and a nobody like me is on Terfblocker, simply due to Follows.

littlbrowndog · 31/08/2019 18:14

Am on terfblocker. I just follow

zebrasdontwearbras · 31/08/2019 18:31

Yes, I get exactly the same as your screenshot, juells.

I have been de-boosted for no other reason than either being gender critical, or on terfblocker. I've never been reported, or had a warning from twitter, so I don't know what else it could be.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/08/2019 18:49

What is 'deboosting', please? I don't suppose I'm not the only person who doesn't know what this means (google is giving me hits about slowing down rockets)

zebrasdontwearbras · 31/08/2019 19:27

Erroll:

Reply Deboosting
If Twitter's signals determine that an account might engage in harmful behavior, Twitter hides their replies behind a barrier and only loads them when "Show more replies" is clicked. This behavior is personalized, i.e. Twitter does not hide the tweets of accounts you follow. We therefore use an unbiased reference account without followings in order to determine whether tweets within a thread can be retrieved without clicking "Show more replies" from its view.
In some cases, Twitter classifies tweets or accounts in a way that their tweets show up within the section for offensive replies. In this case, replies are hidden behind a second barrier within the "Show more replies" section.

You can see if you're deboosted here shadowban.eu/

VickyEadieofThigh · 31/08/2019 19:41

I'm deboosted. Twitter has also enables some accounts to hide replies - for example, the vast number of negative replies Devon rape crisis centre got to their tweet advertising for a self-identifying woman (sic) - I can't see any of them now.

Juells · 31/08/2019 20:23

I'm either on terfblocker, or huge numbers of posters have been banned, as every thread I look at (like the Devon Rape Crisis thread) is full of tweet unavailable notices.

Women really are being silenced, aren't they?

OP posts:
zebrasdontwearbras · 31/08/2019 20:36

We are on Twitter.

The admin seem to have been infiltrated by TRA - when McKinnon and Prior have been banned, people have pulled strings to get them re-instated, and talked about "knowing someone in twitter admin."

Unbelievable that the likes of Yaniv roam freely on twitter, but women are silenced.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/08/2019 21:15

Thanks zebra.

Sheesh.

Voice0fReason · 31/08/2019 23:02

You can absolutely find yourself on terfblocker simply because you follow known feminists.

stumbledin · 31/08/2019 23:13

I was reading up on this as I am not on twitter and constantly wonder why any sane woman is.

But then my googling led me to see that Facebook also does this.

hmmmmm .... and there I was thinking everyone must be on holiday but more likely I've been deboosted.

RosesAndRaindrops · 31/08/2019 23:13

I'm no expert, but I'd have thought replies could make you "deboosted" if they're starting to deboost comments?
I mean, it'd still count as a tweet and depending on the content could well be so.
If it's true you get on blocker lists just by following and nothing else though, I don't agree with that.
That in my eyes is the same as following some newspaper media outlets and ones outside of your stance too for a balanced view - which is what people should do.
Should be able to follow both so called sides.

Creepster · 31/08/2019 23:19

I was on the naughty step for 12 hours and checked to see if I was deboosted when I was allowed back after mods determining that I did not violate rules in 2 of the 3 posts reported and I removed the 3rd. Nope.
Four days later I checked again and sure enough ! D boosted!

Spinnaret · 31/08/2019 23:22

I have two Twitter accounts. One that I only use for work. It is not deboosted. My other, personal, GC one, is deboosted. Yet Yaniv is not. Make of that what you will.

SirVixofVixHall · 31/08/2019 23:27

I am on terfblocker, thanks to Madigan, who I have never interacted with.

RosesAndRaindrops · 31/08/2019 23:29

Your GC one is deboosted? As I said, didn't know Twitter had started deboosting accounts.
Why would your GC one be and not the other one though? Depends on what you're doing on the GC one surely.

boatyardblues · 31/08/2019 23:32

I am not logged in to Twitter (I have a dormant account somewhere that I’ve not touched for 7+ years) but I follow a lot of links from MN and read GC Twitter in lurker mode. I’ve been seeing more & more holes in threads which say ‘tweet unavailable’. Does Twitter also use cookies to suppress content for lurkers?

Spinnaret · 31/08/2019 23:50

@RosesAndRaindrops Following prominent feminists, reading, learning, occasional retweets or likes. Very rare replies and never started a thread of my own. I have about 15 followers and follow a couple of hundred, so I am irrelevant. Yet, this gets me deboosted. While the vile Yaniv and others of his ilk are not. I have never been warned, reported or otherwise put on the Twitter naughty step. It is purely related to who I follow and very occasionally interact with and the fact that this marks me out as GC.

Can see in this instance, sorry - I mean there's nothing wrong with following prominent feminists, no way should that be a ban or deboost. Neither is reading or learning.
If you're (general your) going to start retweeting or liking on top though certain content, can see why they do

Inebriati · 01/09/2019 00:30

''certain content''. It wasn't feminists reposting a cartoon image of a gun along with the threat that an entire group should be exterminated.

RosesAndRaindrops · 01/09/2019 00:37

''. It wasn't feminists reposting a cartoon image of a gun along with the threat that an entire group should be exterminated.

See, haven't even seen that.
Sounds delete worthy obviously!
I don't get what your point is though, sorry?
We didn't do this so that means it wasn't us who did anything banworthy?! Confused
It's not an either or situation.
