Hmm

www.howtoacademy.com/events/transgender-athletes-and-the-science-of-fairness/?mc_cid=ad77a2171a&mc_eid=0ff868ffb0

From the listing:

Should trans athletes participate in women’s sport? Philosophy professor, activist and world champion cyclist Rachel McKinnon sifts science and ethics from politics and prejudice.

An issue with profound consequences for society’s ideas of fairness, gender, and equality, the participation of trans women in women’s competitive sports has made regular front page news.

Dr. Rachel McKinnon is at the forefront. As the first openly trans woman to win a world championship in an Olympic sport, she faces constant harassment and abuse on social media, while as an activist and public intellectual, her campaigns, papers, articles and interviews have done much to shift attitudes in the world of international sport and beyond.

In this talk, Dr. McKinnon will explore the ethics, law and science of fairness in sport, including whether biological restrictions such as testosterone limits violate principles of fairness and equality. Ahead of this autumn’s track racing world championship in Manchester, don’t miss this opportunity to hear from an internationally renowned athlete and scholar on how she is breaking down barriers and helping to overturn prejudice with science.

The science of fairness? Surely the whole point is that life is unfair and random - born tall? That's the very basis upon which McK builds the theory that TW should compete against women. If every body is different then 'fairness' doesn't actually exist anyway, so why stop TW competing wherever they so choose?

It's just more of the same trope - "Lie with a straight face and be very offended if anyone challenges you. They'll soon go away"

DrLouiseMoody · 14/08/2019 11:04

An "internationally renowned athlete whose best time rivals that of my seventy something father-in-law 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

They would have NO chance of winning anything were they to compete in the correct category.

Not wise to try and get them no-platformed. That's just TRA tactics. But it would be absolutely TERRIBLE were their aggressive posts about wanting us all to die in a grease fire were to beade public again nearer the time. Just terrible.

It's also worth noting that masters cycling events are self-funded - if you want to compete then you have to pay for yourself. I know several riders who were winners who didn't go to LA to compete because they couldn't afford it. You may be able to hit the times and get the right results, but if you don't have the money to go, then you aren't going to get your rainbow bands (and I really don't understand why the UCI insist on cheapening the brand by handing these out to masters riders).

Look at it like when sporting parents let their children wear the medal or hold the trophy for photos.

It may be indulged but no one actually takes it seriously. Same thing, except the indulgence is threats instead. Nobody actually believes McK is a rightful winner!

kaitlinktm · 14/08/2019 11:57

… but of course I'd be delighted to pay £30 to be gaslit by the ravings of somebody who's blocked me on Twitter

I think she must have blocked half of MN by now - she blocked me for liking something she didn't approve of. I have only liked 9 things on Twitter but I still managed to get blocked by her. I bet she wishes she could block people in real life too.

Hope nobody goes.

mummmy2017 · 14/08/2019 12:10

What i find funny is my male friends are ok with it till you put some home truths in front of them.
Okish male sportsman... Transwoman.... Wins race as female.. WTF...... Is the normal answer.

TirisfalPumpkin · 14/08/2019 12:36

Great. Prime peak material.

DanaPhoenix · 14/08/2019 12:51

Does anyone have the full title of Rachel's dissertation handy?

IIRC - Baffling with Bullshit...something something...

The FPFW and WPUK event sold hundreds of tickets and there were waiting lists in case of cancellations. Let's see how many people turn up to see McKinnon present their laughably incompetent attempts at scientific research.

It might pull an audience in the same way a massive house fire attracts an audience. You know it's awful and tragic but morbid fascination drives you on to take a look.

GirlDownUnder · 14/08/2019 13:49

Dana be sensible! You know very well it is:

“Reasonable Assertions: On Norms of Assertion and Why You Don't Need to Know What You're Talking About “

GirlDownUnder · 14/08/2019 13:50

Although to be fair your title is snappier.

Michelleoftheresistance · 14/08/2019 13:56

It'll be a bastion of the Woke and For It who'll applaud every word without the faintest critical thought or referral to actual fact. Echo chamber in fact. But it'll provide very helpful evidence of batshittery and how unquestioned and how unbalanced and anti woman the 'for' side of the debate is. Particularly when there's no escaping that this is in fact a male lecturing on what sport women should be allowed, what fairness is for women, what a woman is and who should be allowed to be one. People are going to see straight through that.

So crack on Rache. Go for it. Sunlight, that's all that's necessary.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/08/2019 13:56

'Rachel McKinnon sifts science and ethics...' and ignores them entirely.

EverylittleAlps · 14/08/2019 13:59

Should trans athletes participate in women’s sport?

This, on the face of it, is unclear. It could be about female-to-male trans people (for example, in PE lessons) who should be allowed to compete against women, to avoid the humiliation of lagging far behind, or the danger of being seriously injured by, male competitors.

DrLouiseMoody · 14/08/2019 14:13

Should I dress up as a giant penis and throw myself in front of THEIR bike? #askingforafriend

GirlDownUnder · 14/08/2019 14:19

...throw myself in front of THEIR bike?

Umm depends, they don’t look light? You might get squished Flowers

MockerstheFeManist · 14/08/2019 14:22

Dress up as Emily Davidson, shirly?

"Spokes For Women"

ErrolTheDragon · 14/08/2019 14:23

You could, DrL but you'd look like a bit of a dick.

andyoldlabour · 14/08/2019 14:37

"It could be about female-to-male trans people (for example, in PE lessons) who should be allowed to compete against women,"

Not really, because women transitioning to men - Mack Beggs, Verity Smith - take testosterone which is a performance enhancing drug, which means they will bulk up and increase muscle mass.

Well girldownunder I'm well aware of my tendency to ramble on, and on...
I thought for once in my life I'd try and be brief Grin.

Michelleoftheresistance · 14/08/2019 15:35

Anyway this could be the start of a whole new exciting lecture series where science is presented with extreme personal bias and agenda. Such as:

'Examining the science and dispelling the myths: why sugar is good for your teeth and definitely doesn't make you fat, and how chocolate could be more important in your diet than vegetables', delivered by Cadbury.

'Wrongthink: the scientific facts on how investigating burglary and muggings are a poor use of police time and resources, and how limericks really are the biggest threat to national security' delivered by PC Gul.

DanaPhoenix · 14/08/2019 15:50

Brilliant Michelle I think you may be onto something there. Maybe send a synopsis to the BBC, lord knows it'd be lovely to see one of us making some money from this bollocks for once.

StrangeLookingParasite · 16/08/2019 03:21

"Can anyone think of a less appealing offer you've seen lately than paying 25 quid to hear Rachel McKinnon speak?"

Maybe a colonoscopy.
