We wanted to bring your attention to an article in the academic journal Scottish Affairs, which has been published today. It’s about gender self-identification, Scottish public policymaking and policy capture, a topic we’ve seen debated in FWR on more than one occasion!

We’re delighted to say the article is published on an open access basis, so you can all read the full text and share it as you see fit on social media and elsewhere.

We think Mumsnet is an important resource for women and we have definitely benefitted from following debates on here.

Like so many women involved in this debate, we have been doing this work in our own time on an unpaid basis, squeezed around work, childcare and other responsibilities. We do this work because we care very much about women's rights and we are pleased to be able to bring our skills to bear in analysing policy and practice.

You can read more about the work we’ve done to date on our blog. We welcome all feedback, so please do drop us a line via our contact form.

Thank you!

Placemarking. Thanks for posting.

Thank you for this thorough and detailed piece.

I was one of the few Scottish women who did hear about the original consultation, but only a week before the deadline so my response was not as well thought through, detailed and referenced as I would have liked (I did better with the Westminster version).

Your work will help me and others respond more completely when the consultation is reopened.

You’re incredibly brave, Juells and I mean that seriously. Well done and I hope people actually read it before they start screaming abuse.

And thank you all for this brilliant article, MurrayBlackburnMackenzie. 💐

Bump.

Thank you for the kind comments above.

In answer to a question upthread, Scottish Affairs is indeed a peer-reviewed journal. We owe a debt of gratitude to the journal for publishing the paper and we are grateful to the support we've had from the journal editor.

We hope to continue to research and write about this issue (albeit it would be nice to be remunerated for this work one of these days!).

Thank you

attempts to bump it down by derailing other threads is ongoing

Oh, that's what that's been all about.

Bookmarking for later reading.

OccasionalKite · 02/08/2019 01:51

I'm currently about halfway through!

It's a bloody good read:

To read later.

I’m not sure if there’s a thread for this already but just in case there’s not, there’s a Scottish consultation that includes what the definition of woman should be that closes on Sunday:

Oh, that's what that's been all about.

Ah, I wondered why someone was all over other threads like a rash.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 02/08/2019 09:45

It’s important not to get drawn into those attempts as we help by engaging. Keep our attention on these important threads and not the attempts to distract us.

nettie434 · 02/08/2019 09:50

Oh no, I have spent ages on another thread. Hope I was not lured into being distracted. Read the article yesterday - really interesting.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 02/08/2019 10:34

It just ends up the top threads are really endless arguments about nothing with people constantly repeating themselves... meanwhile others are missing these types of threads. I think certain users are deliberately provoking for some reason....

FormerMediocreMale · 02/08/2019 10:41

Bump as this is important. Also useful to anyone inclined to complete the consultation linked.

jhuizinga · 02/08/2019 11:22

An excellent analysis of what had been happening in Scotland. I hope it is widely read.

My browser doesn't like the link to your blog; anyone else had a problem?
