Insufferably Intolerant Science Nerd

This person (and I think it’s a woman, I’m assuming so in my use of pronouns for this post!) runs a Facebook page and an internet blog calling out anti-vaxxers and homeopathic medicine practitioners. Today she’s posted a long piece on FB blaming women (‘typically vis women’ she says) for internalised misogyny.

I just don’t get it. Where’s her hardline science gone when she talks about ‘cis’ and ‘trans’? The post has caused a whole lot of women to join the bandwagon agreeing that the misogyny is invariably from women. No one seems to have picked up on the implication that a transwoman is just another kind of woman...

A link would be useful.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 27/07/2019 14:06

There is a strange disconnect in a lot of science nerds. It goes "anti-vaxxers bad, homeopathy bad, climate change deniers bad - but people can of course change sex because clownfish".

Or something like that.

There was a long thread on it a while back:

Because this person is parroting what others say without any thought of their own.

70sWitch · 27/07/2019 17:29

Doesn't get much more misogynist than reducing women to a subcategory of their own sex.

HappyPunky · 27/07/2019 17:32

I used to follow this page on facebook but unfollowed after a nasty rant about terfs and swerfs. She has posted about transwomen breast feeding and uterus implants amongst other things.

She's a lesbian in Australia who celebrated same sex marriage a couple of years ago when it became legal there and I think she then got married.

She also worked in a brothel. I was pretty horrified by how much she hates women so I stopped following.

XenoBio · 27/07/2019 17:40

I used to follow too, and suspect I unfollowed at the exact same point as happy

There was a sort of burble burble cis burble burble clownfish burble burble 4 Page rant.

I was REALLY disappointed. I did think a lesbian with scientific knowledge and experience of sex work would get it. Seems not.

HappyPunky · 27/07/2019 17:47

Yes Xeno!! That was the one!!
I occasionally see posts that have been shared and have a look but although she does know the difference between sex and gender stereotypes she still can't seem to separate them.

See also Science Kitten who I think is a transman.

XenoBio · 27/07/2019 18:55

I wonder how many followers she lost that day?

I feel so desperately sad for her too. Th sex work, the internalised hatred. For all her shouting I think she is both unconsciously misogynistic and homophobic and can’t work herself out. I think she mentioned being overweight too, and was a bit too, chirpy about not caring. I hope she grows to like herself. I really do.

HappyPunky · 27/07/2019 19:28

Probably quite a few, I think the rant was in response to gc women.

I felt sad for her too, and her girlfriend /wife. It's hard being with someone who doesn't like themself.

Shes posted pictures of a t shirt which I assume was of herself and she looked fine. I think it was one she commissioned that says stuff like - "Vaccines work, the earth isn't flat, gmos are safe"

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 27/07/2019 19:50

I’m not a scientist, but thanks to FWR, I know quite a lot about the lifecycle of clownfish. It’s not information I had ever anticipated needing, but facts are good to have, right?

But despite lack of being sciency, I’m very confident in saying that clownfish are not at all like humans. Because fish.

That scientists can science and also believe completely batshit stuff is important to know and should make us all really critical thinkers.

HopeClearwater · 27/07/2019 20:12

I apologise about the lack of link - I just didn’t think to do that.
I find the whole thing so depressing.

Male women are better than female women. Oh, and internalised misogyny is bad.Hmm

nauticant · 27/07/2019 20:45

When men find out how much better male women are, women might as well pack up and go home. It'll be game over for them.

XenoBio · 27/07/2019 21:12

Shes posted pictures of a t shirt which I assume was of herself and she looked fine

Ah. Apologies if that was her. I’ve had a look to see if I could see the post im thinking of. But can’t find it. It was something to do with getting abuse in the street about the way she looked, and I’m convinced there was a mention of being overweight at some point in her life in there.

There was SOMETHING about her wording that just made me think she’d internalised that abuse and half believed it. I felt so damn sad for her. Ive had years of that shit and it is hard to shake. Hard NOT to take it in.

HappyPunky · 27/07/2019 21:22

Sorry yes I agree with you! I was thinking she's probably average size but some arsehole called her fat and that's stayed with her.

GrumpyGran8 · 02/01/2020 16:38

Apologies for reviving an old thread, but 'Insufferably Intolerant Science Nerd' has just discovered this thread and has posted on Facebook about it. The good thing is that she's posted a link, so people will be able to come here and make up their own minds about Mumsnet. (her fans won't, of course, but casual readers may well do so).

HopeClearwater · 02/01/2020 16:41

Thanks for that. I unfollowed her but it would be interesting to see what the comments are like.

I loved the typo "vis" women. Brought back Sid the sexist and fat slags and all that.

I'm grown up now.

HopeClearwater · 02/01/2020 16:50

Yes sorry about that. I need to remember that I can’t edit posts.

I remember Viz fondly. I don’t think I’ve grown up.

TiredofthisBS · 02/01/2020 16:51

Does she self-identify as a scientist one wonders? 🤔

TiredofthisBS · 02/01/2020 17:12

Also wonderfully judgemental and lacking in self-awareness. Does she truly believe that we're just a ignorant bunch of mums? That our FWR doesn't include Doctors, nurses, lawyers, biologists etc. Plus sex work phobia - Really? People forced into prostitution through sex trafficking - drugged, raped, maimed and murdered because they want to?

That's okay. Wokedom makes it all okay. Hmm

ACatWhoBinds · 02/01/2020 17:38

@TiredofthisBS no one is saying that forced sex work is good - that’s wilfully missing the point and I think you know that. Dismantling the stigma of people doing sex work would mean better access to healthcare, mental health support and make it safer for them. Hell, we could even unionise! No one is saying trafficking is good though, we’re saying that people who do choose to do it shouldn’t have to face stigma and should be safer

GrumpyGran8 · 02/01/2020 17:59

but it would be interesting to see what the comments are like
No it wouldn't.
I found her page by following a random Twitter link - I'd never heard of her. I read through several posts and the comments were entirely adulatory. Anybody who is conent to have an FB page full of praise from fans needs to take a serious look at what they've become.

RoyalCorgi · 02/01/2020 18:38

God, these people are thick.

I have a FB friend exactly like that. Gets angry about anti-vaxxers, homeopaths, people who believe the earth is flat etc but genuinely thinks it's possible to be born in the wrong body. Gets angry with people who say she's wrong.

TiredofthisBS · 02/01/2020 18:49

And how many people wilfully choose do sex work exactly? It's not a gung-ho choice - many people do it because of circumstance not because they enjoy it.
