And I’m glad

OP posts:

I thought it was Damian Hinds (Education). He was in a hugely powerful position to diplomatically reign in lobby groups and insist that safeguarding was prioritised. Instead he ignored each and every aspect of safeguarding being undermined, parental alienation and groups pushing drugs and surgery at children, responding to complaints by with letters praising mixed sex toilets. Creep.

ThePurported · 27/07/2019 11:36

Would love to know who that cabinet member was/is.
Re Bercow
You may recall the case of Karen White, a transgender rapist assigned to a women’s prison who sexually assaulted several inmates there. In September MPs asked to question ministers about that scandal. Speaker John Bercow – who happens to be the president of a trans-rights campaign group – refused to allow any debate.

And Bercow is mates with Mx. Edward Lord.

TimeLady · 27/07/2019 11:42

I've had this sudden vision of Johnson sitting behind the Apprentice desk, summoning in ministers, one by one, to advise them of their fate:

"Do you believe TWAW?"

"Yes"

"You're fired"

Oh, if only that were the case.

LizzieSiddal · 27/07/2019 12:01

iirc Bercow has close links with an LGBT charity. Can’t remember the details though.

I’m sure he will be gone as soon as Brexit happens. So that could be as 31st Oct if we are to believe Johnson.Hmm

Damien Hinds resigned as a Education Minister in July 2019. So he’s gone!

I cannot imagine Self ID being brought in now. Not just because it seems there are more GC people in charge, but also, all the reports and incidents, over the past 6 months in the press.
Numerous incidents and warnings of what is to come if Self ID were brought in. They’d be absolutely bonkers to do it.

ZebrasAreBras · 27/07/2019 12:21

Yes, that's the thing with Bercow - disallowing the question on Karen White, and mates with Lord. Eugh. Don't think we ever found out for sure who the Cabinet Minister was - but v likely they've gone now Wink

What happened in Scotland is the best indicator that self-ID will be shelved for now.

It is not irrelevant that Christine Burns (I think? or maybe Stephen Whittle) said, on passing the GRA2004, that "we managed to get it through without anyone throwing a fit in press" - well, now plenty of people are doing exactly that.

Needmoresleep · 27/07/2019 13:30

The Tories would love to get of Bercow. Though he was elected as a Tory (the majority party provides the speaker. However they are supposed to be neutral so not part of the Cabinet) he did May few favours.

He clings on, presumably because Labour enjoy Tory discomfort.

We saw him once in Sainsbury's Victoria struggling with self check out. 'Unexpected item in the bagging area'. Precisely. The man is odious.

Popchyk · 27/07/2019 14:09

Linda Riley, enthusiastic welcomer of men identifying as lesbians, singing the praises of Bercow in a now-deleted Tweet.

"In my personal experience since John Bercow become speaker of House of Commons he has done nothing but welcome and support all Strands of Diversity. I have been to multiple events at the Speakers house, where he has spoken passionately about Diversity. #JohnBercow"

Wonder why Riley deleted the Tweet?

youllhavehadyourtea · 27/07/2019 15:08

I thought it was Damian Hinds (Education).

That's interesting.

I seem to rememebr this person was described as a senior cabinet memebr.

I wouldnt have thought Education was a particular Senior post. So I looked up Wiki and got this

Following the 2017 United Kingdom general election, in which the number of Conservative MPs fell from 330 to 317, Theresa May appointed Damian Green as her de facto Deputy Prime Minister as First Secretary of State and Minister for the Cabinet Office and with the ranking of second most senior Cabinet member; above the Chancellor.

Good call.

youllhavehadyourtea · 27/07/2019 15:09

ahhh wait... That says Damian Green. Not Damian Hinds.

Now Im confused!

nettie434 · 28/07/2019 05:04

Damian Green resigned at the of 2017 so I don’t think it could have been him. Damian Hinds has been clear that he does not think young children should be taught about gay and trans relationships although he has supported the head teacher in Birmingham. I think it might be Sajid Javid, given JK said it was someone unexpected. He is not religious, although he is from a Muslim family. Anyway, that’s just my guess. He is a quite modern politician - socially and fiscally liberal.

Who knows? I think it would be much harder to implement GRC reform now but don’t want to appear complacent.

Sunkisses · 28/07/2019 05:44

Yes, where is @R0wantrees? Hope you are on a lovely holiday!

Nappyvalley15 · 28/07/2019 09:16

I always wondered if it was Jeremy Hunt.

ThePurported · 28/07/2019 09:32

Wouldn't it be great if politicians were open about their views on self-id and their definition of woman, so we didn't have to try and guess which ones of them support this move to abolish sex as a protected characteristic?

MockerstheFeManist · 28/07/2019 09:39

the majority party provides the speaker.

Nope. It normally alternates, but it's up to the MPs to choose.

Current senior Deputy Speaker Lindsey Hoyle (Lab) is well-liked by all, as is Elanor Laing (Con).
