MNHQ, we asked if we could have petition threads in FWR, considering this is an area of the site dedicated to politics and campaigning.

You said no, because you're worried the site will be overrun by zillions of petition threads.

Therefore, this is a compromise suggestion. We'd like to have a single thread within FWR, where we can talk about news related to petitions and link to the Petitions board and elsewhere.

In FWR we love not only to sign petitions but to talk about them. This is an important topic for us.

If we have a single thread, the place won't get cluttered up, we can keep our chat about petitions here.

But, hardly anyone knows the Petitions board exists. If we just post there, and can't link from FWR, no one will see them. It's a place of tumbleweed.

Please, MNHQ, let this thread stand.

Thank you Gin Gin Gin

Currently languishing over on the Petitions board:

Mermaids Petition: Petition: Inquiry into LGBT lobby groups such as Stonewall

It's a UK Parliament Petition, currently at 1050.

This is a bit of an odd one - it's not a Petition - it was an appeal to support a motion in the Scottish Parliament. A bit baffled as to why this was moved to the Petitions Board.

Please help support motion for women to meet peacefully

Unsurprisingly, after it moved there, the conversation stopped.

Does anyone know if this is still live? And if not, what happened next / can we help support this in other ways?

Sounds like a good idea to me, would we still also put the petitions on the other board too though so non - FWR readers can hotel find them?

AncientLights · 23/07/2019 10:13

I had no idea there was a petitions' board. I only visit here.

wigglybluelines · 23/07/2019 10:16

would we still also put the petitions on the other board too though so non - FWR readers can ... find them?

No one will find them on the Petitions board though, that's the point! There is zero traffic to petitions started there. The ones with traffic AFAIK are ones started elsewhere then moved there.

But MN insist petitions are put there so I guess we have to play along!

This is a great idea

I only find petitions I want to support via FWR Wine

Great idea. I had no idea there was a petitions board, and I'd been wondering why the petition linked in your 2nd post was not being discussed here.

MoleSmokes · 23/07/2019 10:45

The Petitions Board is here BTW Smile:

I'd like to recommend people look at this one - easy to miss because the title is so vague!

Awful case of a sex pest male Councillor in Harrow who connived in having a woman whom he "groped" (reported to police) lose her children for many months and she had to fight to get them back into the UK. All he got was a "slap on the wrist" censure!

The original words from the victim’s complaint:

“My complaints are councillor Wright sexually preyed on me during the time of May - June 2018 when I was ill and my children were taken into care by Harrow Social Service, colluding with Head Of People’s Service Paul Hewitt and aided by his colleagues Norman Stevenson and Paul Osborne who refused to help me and pushed me into the grasp of councillor Wright.

Then after I rejected his insertion into my meeting with MP Nick Hurd and reported him to the police he tried to sabotage my children’s case and made denigrating phone calls around.

His action, together with Paul Hewitt’s conniving at social service’s deliberate misconduct resulted in my children being unjustly removed from my care and remained in a foreign country, subject to foster care even after all the facts and independent experts reports and recommendations were univocal towards the children should be returned to my care with support package from LA.

The separation was 7 months long and in December 2018 hearing the judge ordered the children return to my care after 5 days cross examination of witnesses and social workers.

It was revealed in that hearing that from onset LA plotted to remove my children permanently against all government guidances and expert reports. LA used false information and committed perjury.”

"An appeal has been sent to Harrow Council Standards Officer Hugh Peart and the Cabinet members lead by councillor Graham Henson. The victim has not got a reply."

MNHQ, I support this amendment!

MoleSmokes · 23/07/2019 11:23

Hopefully not to derail from the purpose of linking to Petitions on the Mumsnet Petition Board and I hope this is helpful.

Although I support the idea of FWR Petitions being more accessible and available for discussion, I am not keen on using commercial "Petition Sites". It especially bugs me when people post petitions on something like Change Org when they are asking Parliament or a local council to do something and there are ways to directly petition Parliament and Councils.

I also avoid Petitions of the "Stop Smacking Donkeys!" variety where there is a vague claim that someone in Turkey/China/etc. did something bad and it must be stopped now!

Please don't just post links to the "usual suspects" just because you once signed a Petition on them Smile

Mumminmum · 23/07/2019 12:08

Thank you for telling me, that there is a petitions board.

wigglybluelines · 23/07/2019 16:35

Interesting post, MoleSmokes, thanks?

How can people directly petition local councils?

OP posts:
DpWm · 23/07/2019 18:59

I like the idea.
Instead of feminist book clubs and feminist theory which are rarely visited, there could be "feminist petitions" instead.

youkiddingme · 23/07/2019 19:27

Never knew there is a petitions board. But unless there's a thread linking to it from another board why would anyone visit it, you don't tend to think, 'I wonder if there's any good petitions to sign today'.
This would work well, great idea.

wigglybluelines · 23/07/2019 19:27

That'd definitely be better than the Petitions board, but it'll still be fairly tumbleweedy compared to Feminist Chat.

How often do women here visit any of the other feminist topics except Feminist chat?

Personally, I forget they exist most of the time! Do other women visit them more often that me or do most not get round to it / forget about them?

@WigglyBlueLines "How can people directly petition local councils?"

I wish I could remember which Council websites where I have seen this! I have no idea if it is a common thing or not. If I remember or come across another one, I promise to try to remember to come back here and post a link Smile

'Declaration on women's sex based rights'

This seems to be an international petition to re-instate/protect women's sex -based rights. I don't see it on the petitions board, and there may be reasons, beyond my understanding, why it shouldn't be. Would any of You more experienced women like to take a look? I'm not going to bang it on the petitions board when I'm not sure I know what I'm doing. And besides I might be rubbish at searching too.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 28/07/2019 08:46

I also didn't know there was a petitions board.

Yes, please, MNHQ, could we please have a petitions thread in FWR?

cwg1 · 06/08/2019 13:49

May I put in a plea for the petition? I hope this isn't cheeky as I'm not its creator and am still very new as a GCer, but I'm feeling inspired by the ReSisters sofa campaign Smile

The petition currently stands around the 1,500 mark; one from the trans lobby, started a few days later, about 'media transphobia', is at 4,500.

So could we put some viper-power behind it? Grin Events are moving very quickly and it's so wonderful to see so many successful meetings and that word is spreading. The increase in traffic to FWR is amazing and the Hello Lurkers thread was lovely.

Please, if you can, sign the petition and share, either privately or publicly, if you are able. Please also give the thread for it a bump, to try to keep it in Active Conversations, and gain more signatures.

I think it's important, not only for its subject matter, but to raise awareness at Westminster. Women have been unstinting in their efforts, but, AIUI, MPs are snowed under about Brexit. If we can, we need to keep reminding them of the erosion of women's rights.

We have 5 months to get to 10,000 signatures and gain a written response from government.

Finally, make an old gimmer happy - I love to see the map being coloured in Grin

Thank you.

MoleSmokes · 07/08/2019 03:39

Which petition @cwg1 ?

I followed the link to the Declaration of Women's Rights Petition but that has over 5,000 signatures so I am guessing you mean a different one Smile

MangoesAreMyFavourite · 07/08/2019 09:05

Would be great to have this as a sticky on FWR.
