Transgender man who gave birth loses high court privacy ruling

Why am I not surprised?

OP posts:
Doyoumind · 16/07/2019 16:16

Isn't this the one who is the basis of that film that's been discussed on here?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/07/2019 16:17

Oh. No surprises then. Why is it in the public interest - what was the ruling anyway? (You gave birth therefore you are the mother - you can call yourself watever you like but biology is biology - concentrate on the baby now?)

@doyoumind no it's a different person.

failingatlife · 16/07/2019 16:28

It's the same person. They have been denied anonymity because of the film.

failingatlife · 16/07/2019 16:29

Ruling due later this week.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 16/07/2019 16:29

*demands anonymity because much nasty bullies etc
*participates in a television documentary, because only wants anonymity on their terms

That poor poor kid. It's the most basic of human rights.

LangCleg · 16/07/2019 16:30

chest reshaping surgery

Not seen that before.

frazzled1 · 16/07/2019 16:39

When McConnell was born, his registered gender was female.

Hmm Only in The Guardian.

dancingcamper · 16/07/2019 16:41

His lawyer, Karen Holden, said: “Having an accurate birth certificate is vital as it stays with someone for their entire life and forms part of their identity.

I agree. The birth mother should be recorded as the mother.

Incidentally, what normally happens in the case of sperm donors? Does the intended father get recorded as the father? Where is the sperm donor recorded?

OhHolyJesus · 16/07/2019 16:42

I'm still confused as to how he could have been legally recorded as Male when he was heavily pregnant.

Melroses · 16/07/2019 16:46

It's easy - it's just paperwork and admin. You can keep all your bits, so you can father children or give birth to them according to your biological sex which is what it is.

Rumboogie · 16/07/2019 16:46

Ha!

happydappy2 · 16/07/2019 16:48

Only women can give birth-this person is the childs Mother-but they have chosen to take testosterone, have their breasts 're shaped' and grow facial hair. That is their choice but it does not make them the Father.

CraicMammy · 16/07/2019 16:49

The judgment later this week is going to be interesting

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/07/2019 16:50

So can a child change their birth cert if the man in the ‘father’ box was a deadbeat but their stepdad was more of a dad than ‘father’ was? It’s just a word.

That poor kid.

Jellylegsni · 16/07/2019 16:52

It really is striking how disconnected some people are from the reality of their body. Being pregnant, giving birth and breastfeeding are the only time in my life that I felt a proper awareness that I am female. I don't mean in a gender identity sense, I mean in a "I have a female body and am doing something only a person with a female body can ever do" kind of sense. I don't have that feeling during my period, maybe because it's something I am used to, although it is true of that as well. If I was a genderist who felt that their true self was male, getting pregnant would be the last thing I would want to do, I would imagine.

sunshinesupermum · 16/07/2019 16:55

Ugh - this makes me mad - biologically only a woman with a womb can give birth (or so I was brought up to believe!)

Now a trans person calls herself a father to the child. That child is going to be very confused when asking who his/her other parent is.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/07/2019 16:58

Helping the kid out with their biology homework will be fun in a few years time.

I really don't get how you can so strongly feel that you are 'male on the inside' and then do such a 'female' thing like getting pregnant? And then decide that you want to be registered as 'father' on the birth certificate?!

It's crazy!

Eaudear · 16/07/2019 17:05

Yes, involving your own child in the delusion that you are their father when you gave birth to them - it's kind of selfish isn't it? It a goes back to everyone having to play along for it to work doesn't it?

And I'm sure people will compare this to homosexual parents when it is totally incomparable.

A lesbian or gay couple who have a child will presumably be open with the child about how they conceived. That one of them is not their biological parent etc Everything is still factual and out there, no one has to say anything that isn't true.

OhHolyJesus · 16/07/2019 17:10

Reading that Ex her actions seem deceptive, I'm keen to know the judges decision.

I haven't seen the documentary but I'll look it up - I'm reminded of a similar subject on a BBC3 doc about two transmen who had a baby with a sperm donor but wanted to both be named as the father (or father and parent, I can't remember) on the birth certificate and being very cross that they couldn't have their own way. Wherever they are now I'm sure they are eargerly awaiting the outcome of this.

PolkadotLollipop · 16/07/2019 17:14

eaudear, it makes no sense to be disgusted by your biological sex and yet perform the most fundamental function of it, reproduction. Totally and utterly baffling.
