I find this a bit weird. It's the form for summer reading challenge. No other data capture around minority groups or access issues. I find it a bit creepy and a stealth way to collect data. Thoughts?

I would encourage DD to describe herself in another way as well as ticking the girl box. She has an obviously female name.

It does seem a bit strange how they ask but it's better than replacing sex with gender.

Soola · 13/07/2019 15:45

It’s insidious. I would have used a black marker pen to write the word NONSENSE in the box that says ‘in another way.’

Remember this crap from a few years ago?

Another way: Smarter than you, you brain dead woke morons, asking questions and then providing the possibility for answers that make the question completely f*cking meaningless.

Outanabout · 13/07/2019 15:50

Oooh I wouldn't like that, when its connected to a name and a school.

Soola · 13/07/2019 15:51

What age group is this aimed at and is it from the school or a library?

nevernotstruggling · 13/07/2019 15:52

I didn't like it. I crossed them all out on the form. My nephew who was with me made me write 'why????' In the box. He's 7

What's the point, if they want to know who is using their service?

They are trying to encourage boys to read doing they want to know if they're getting them into the library?

nevernotstruggling · 13/07/2019 15:52

@Soola it's the city library service. I think it's a creepy thing to collect data on.

@nevernotstruggling

Thank you.

It’s vile.

LangCleg · 13/07/2019 16:09

I don't like it at all.

MagneticSingularity · 13/07/2019 16:13

Another way?

There’s another way? What other way? Wtf is this saying to children? You can be a boy or a girl or something that is both/neither/a dragon?

There is no other way ffs.

Hirsutefirs · 13/07/2019 16:15

Through interpretive dance.

That’s the obvious other way.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/07/2019 16:15

4”3, blue eyes, brown hair
Child
Sporty
Happy
Dragon

What exactly do they way a child to say?

BeyondDangerousTshirts · 13/07/2019 16:19

Maybe a little stick drawing?
Or "please see attached" and attach a very detailed drawing? Grin

nevernotstruggling · 13/07/2019 16:24

What irks me the most is that the data they capture is useless.

It's aimed at primary school age - the younger end really.

The library service will have had to justify why they collect each bit of information. Sex will be useful to ensure that the marketing appeals to both boys and girls.

Saying 'How do you describe yourself' is a strange way to ask a child's sex. I'm not sure most 7 year olds would understand the question until the choice of answers are seen.

It's a form that cares more about not offending adults than ensuring that it's easy for children to understand and complete.

JackyHolyoake · 13/07/2019 16:27

From which City Library s that? [Please don't say Leeds or Edinburgh!]

nevernotstruggling · 13/07/2019 16:32

Exactly.

It's Plymouth

I’ve now found out that Plymouth Library is controlled by Common Purpose a vile lefty version of Freemasonry.

😡

timeforakinderworld · 13/07/2019 17:08

What's wrong with it? You don't have to answer.

PegLegAntoine · 13/07/2019 17:13

That’s the standard form for the challenge across all libraries AFAIK, as opposed to being a specific library/area

AlwaysComingHome · 13/07/2019 17:27

Since it already asks your name the answer to ‘How wouldn’t you describe yourself?’ is ‘See above’

Fraggling · 13/07/2019 17:46

Why aren't they interested in how many girls v boys are taking part though (sex)?

I mean it's totally valid that boys not being as into reading as girls is due to gender (in the sex role sense) but I'm not at all sure that the gap will make sense to measure as internal gender id, given that socialisation into sex role starts so young.

If they have decided that the gap in reading between boys and girls is to do with internal gender id and not to do with sex then that's quite big need isn't it?

Given that many more girls id as boys than vice versa, maybe the stats will even out? Or, do trans boys have a similar attitude on average to average boys? Or, is disinclination to reading a sign that a child is a boy inside?

Fraggling · 13/07/2019 17:46

that's quite big news isn't it?

Sorry typo on phone
