TRAs planning a protest against A Woman's Place meeting on July 10th

The theme of the WPUK meeting is Why female sport matters, and why we must protect it. Effectively the TRAs are protesting against fairness in women's sports.

Details of their protest are below. Protesters are advised not to be violent, to carry offensive banners, or to try and physically stop the meeting from going ahead. 'This is a response, not an attack.'

www.facebook.com/events/2255386031382613/

Women's place UK are a transphobic hate group that work towards the rolling back of trans rights. Their meetings are recruitment drives where they peddle transphobia and their endless justifications for transphobia.

This is happening in our town. Where we live. We need to show them that we won't let hatred towards our trans brothers, sisters and everyone else stand without a response. A fun, musical, party response.

The protest itself will not be taking place at the National Gallery. That is only the meeting place due to it being a large area next to several decent transport routes. Women's Place UK don't release the venue until several hours before the event, so we will move there as soon as we know the location.

Cis allies are encouraged to attend. Allies are needed. Trans people cannot do this alone.

Some ground rules.

1. DO NOT ENGAGE WITH ANY ATTENDEES OR WOMEN'S PLACE UK MEMBERS/SPEAKERS DIRECTLY.

Stay away if you cannot keep it together. Do not directly engage, even if you are baited. If anyone does bait you and you cannot ignore them, walk away.

2. WE ARE NOT ATTEMPTING TO STOP OR INVADE THE MEETING.

This is not the goal. This is a response, not an attack.

2. THIS IS A NON VIOLENT PROTEST.

If anyone is suspected of having any violent intentions, you will be asked to leave.

3. BRING BANNERS THAT WOULDN'T UPSET YOUR MOTHER

We want this to be a family friendly protest. Please avoid swears on your banners.

4. BRING A GUITAR

Singing is fun.

5. DO YOU DO CIRCUS THINGS? BRING CIRCUS THINGS

Every protest needs a juggler.

That's fine. It's their right to enact a peaceful protest but imagine being the sort of person that would protest against "Why female sport matters, and why we must protect it".

butteryellow · 07/07/2019 10:47

I don't think anyone has a problem with people protesting do they? As long as it's not abusive as it has been in the past (women jostled, prevented from entering venues etc), doesn't damage anything (like the graffiti in the past) or waste police resources (like the previous bomb threats)

Perhaps the TRAs are finally growing up and learning about peaceful protest.

Dammit, that's where Posie went wrong.

Talking of the importance of women's sport here's a good thread on what would happen if we lost it.

Yes they have a right to protest. I think it's telling that they have to be warned not to be violent, offensive or obstructive. Feminist protesters never seem to need those warnings.

I just hope that the meeting goes ahead without too much disruption. Women's sports is one of the most important issues in this whole mess.

It is kind of them to entertain us with music and their circus skills.

Aspley · 07/07/2019 11:10

Hopefully the media will pick up on it.
Investigate why the protesters have such a problem with female sport existing without males being allowed to complete.
I hope there is no trouble but intimidating women attending a meeting to discuss the future of female sport is never going to be a good look.

HermioneWeasley · 07/07/2019 11:12

It is inevitable that the event would be protested as every single one has. Good to know they’re hoping not t be violent this time!

FannyCann · 07/07/2019 11:13

Hopefully the strategy of not releasing the venue until close to the time will be successful in averting trouble.

TurboTeddy · 07/07/2019 11:13

This^

And yet it's the GC side that are so frequently accused of violence.

I have no problem with them protesting but I do find the number of warnings about what not to do whilst peacefully demonstrating quite worrying.

Babdoc · 07/07/2019 11:13

I hope their protest gets lots of publicity. They are campaigning for men to compete in women’s sports- ie cheat - in order to win trophies to which they are not entitled, and to crowd women out of our own sports.
The more people get to hear their agenda, the better. It should peak trans thousands.

sackrifice · 07/07/2019 11:14

The Leicester one wasn't. Not a sniff.

Floisme · 07/07/2019 11:16

Anyone in favour of males competing against females is of course entitled to stand up in public and say so.

CadburysTastesVileNow · 07/07/2019 11:16

And I 'm sure we can share a pub afterwards without demanding they be thrown out on the basis of their t shirts.

dancingcamper · 07/07/2019 11:17

I know, quite disappointing! A Sheffield feminist network one wasn't either, but trans people attended and were encouraged to speak.

dancingcamper · 07/07/2019 11:19

As happened in Sheffield too (same pub) almost as though adults can deal with different opinions.

nonsenceagain · 07/07/2019 11:24

There were no protestors at the last London one.

If anyone is coming on Weds and is nervous about going in alone, let us know and I’m sure someone could meet you and go in with you. I’d be happy to 🙂

Cuntysnark · 07/07/2019 11:31

I cynically wonder if it’s because Sharron is speaking so there may be some media attention so the protestors need to be seen as well behaved...

arranbubonicplague · 07/07/2019 11:42

I look forward to the street carnival atmosphere and entertainment of all those lithe young people performing feats of contortion and such skills.

I think that if the organisers were being responsible they'd emphasis that swords, fire, and clubs are not in the recommended set of circus skills.

OrchidInTheSun · 07/07/2019 11:43

Oh I do hope someone brings some juggling balls! I love a bit of juggling

Cookieflavoredbiscuit · 07/07/2019 11:44

Looks like progress to me.
Maybe someday there won't need to be undisclosed till the last minute locations.

I'd be curious to know what's the lowest bar to be considered "baiting" by those who are encouraged to ignore and walk away? Having an opinion? Wearing the wrong T-shirt?

Ereshkigal · 07/07/2019 12:22

This.

NeurotrashWarrior · 07/07/2019 12:28

(Just to clarify my comment on Posie; a woman told her on her fb recording that she was going about her peaceful protest "all wrong.")

R0wantrees · 07/07/2019 12:33

Its fascinating they've decided to protest this WPUK meeting, I dont think there have been protests for a while.

This one is about science & sport.
Hmm
