Fucking hell. I belong to a child-free group on Fb. Fairly good craic even though I don't agree with some stuff on there. Majority in the group probably women in their early 20's. Someone asked yesterday what people thought about Trans woman competing in women's sports and ohhhh my god. The number of women sabotaging themselves with comments such as the one in my title. Wtf is going on? :( I know you'll find uber-wokes in all corners of the internet but God it makes me sad. How are some women so utterly gullible? Apologies - nothing new to add to the debate, I'm much more a reader than a poster but I feel very deflated right now.

Reading the twitter threads: as I understand it she isn't totally wrong. There are skeletons as she mentions where you can't tell the sex, on occasion.

I wonder if part of what's going on is this language of "a spectrum". Many people seem to take it to mean just, variations, or people who don't clearly fit in the usual categories. People don't realise that you can have a binary difference like sex but still have those who don't clearly fit into a group or seem to be outliers.

In my experience people who work in the sciences aren't necessarily better at thinking about language or even logic in a more careful way than others. Which seems odd but it also is so common that I wonder if the error isn't expecting too much from such people.

Where I used to live there was a little, unnamed lane. So the council invited the community to suggest names and then vote for their favourite.

Forever after known as Lois Lane. Grin

Damn. Posted on the wrong thread. Apologies and carry on as you were.

Anyone can be anyone on FB and social media. Are you sure that all these people are really the young women you believe them to be?

Goosefoot · 21/06/2019 15:03

I don't find it difficult to believe a bunch of young women would say something like that. I find them to be among the most aggressive of the woke in many cases.

carla1983 · 21/06/2019 15:50

"Do young women not experience the relentless sexual harassment I got when I was younger? I'm sure they do. I've always been a feminist so I don't remember a time when I thought this was okay, how can women not notice"

"Subconsciously they’ll probably think it’s their fault."

Yes, I experienced harassment as a young woman but I never really thought it through and why it happened. And it was only when #MeToo happened that I realised that I had blamed myself. I somehow thought it wasn't happening so much to other people and there must have been something about me that invited the harassment. I was totally shocked to realise I had believed that, as well as amused that I had somehow thought I was the only one getting so much harassment.

Did you manage to get through to them at all op?

RuffleCrow · 21/06/2019 17:16

Seeing as there's no such thing as a cis-woman i just tend to ignore these daft comments.

I think Wittgenstein was very interested in these sorts of statements that have grammatical form but no content.

DanaPhoenix · 22/06/2019 12:50

Yes the word panties has already creeped me out.
In my circles it tends to be undies, sometimes knickers or if you want to go the bogan blokey route, reg grundies = undies.
A completely Aussie shoutout to our British roots of rhyming slang.

Oh and I’m case anyone is interested in the result of the game I was discussing up thread. YAY blues (NSW) won 14-4 after being down 4-0 at halftime. Something I might point out that is difficult for their male counterparts to achieve at this level.
