There aren’t really words to describe how sickened I am by this. In the city I’m proud to live in, in the middle of fucking Pride month, two women have been beaten up because they didn’t want to put on a show for some disgusting men.

(Have also posted this in AIBU so it reaches a wider audience)

Every few months there's a thread on here asking "why do we still have prides?"

This is why.

FloralBunting · 07/06/2019 13:11

Stonewall can fuck off.

littlbrowndog · 07/06/2019 13:20

See stonewall on this attack on 2 lesbians

Never once used the word lesbian.

Not once

OvaHere · 07/06/2019 13:23

Twitter is telling them how it is.

Horrible twats. A mix of lesbophobia, misogyny and mens general entitlement to womens bodies. Sadly this is not that much of a shock, because..its so common for men to behave in this way. I hope the women are ok and the men are prosecuted, but even the prosecution I am not hopeful for given even when theres recordings of attacks on women its apparently not enough proof.

BatShite · 07/06/2019 13:33

Stonewalls response is again predictable but depressing as fuck. They really hate lesbians these days don't they..cannot even bring themselves to use the word, yet manage to shoehorn 'trans' into the statement Hmm

lorit · 07/06/2019 13:53

Fucking arseholes. Angry

And while Stonewall is tied up in knots over its new favourite cause, homophobia is still around us all the time.

SisterWendyBuckett · 07/06/2019 13:59

Teddybear45 do you really think sexual attacks only happen to women who are (in your words) "attractive"?

I know others have said it already, but I have to call this out too.

woman19 · 07/06/2019 14:18

Time for a national reprise of our Women Only 'Reclaim the Night' actions.

CraftyWoman · 07/06/2019 14:29

They would never have done this if the women involved were overweight / middle aged etc.

And yet, butch lesbians also get assaulted.

This is a classic case of sexual assault primarily then a homophobic crime (which is a lesser crime with lesser penalties) - if they hadn’t been on a bus, maybe walking down a dark street, the boys would probably have tried to rape them after the beating.

No, this is lesbophobia fuelled by "lesbian" porn which fetishises women's sexuality for the titillation of men. I do agree that corrective rape is a thing, but that happens to butch as well as femme lesbians.

This type of thing happens a lot in London to attractive gay women.

It happens to lesbians of all shapes and sizes all over the world.

barelove · 07/06/2019 14:30

Stoneheartedwankers have bowed to pressure and amended their statement:

It’s tempting to think that in 2019, lesbians and bi women are safe from attacks like these, and indeed we all should be.

Nobs for not writing that in the first place.

AngeloMysterioso · 07/06/2019 14:35

Looks like Stonewall got the message- the statement now not only mentioned lesbians, but bisexual women! In fact they use the W word twice! I may need a lie down...

Stonewall will do nothing.

Lesbians and Women have won our own civil rights through our own actions not through male organisations.

FloralBunting · 07/06/2019 14:42

No cookies to Stonewall for amending the statement at all.

They had to amend a statement put out about the assault of a lesbian couple because they didn't mention lesbians the first time round. I might consider a pat on the head appropriate if I was talking about an organization from the conservative establishment, but this was a statement from the exceptionally well funded lobby group that is supposed to represent lesbians. Needing to amend the statement to include lesbians is not a whoopsy oversight, it's a huge, crushing, condemnatory embarrassment.

AncientLights · 07/06/2019 14:43

All TfL buses have CCTV, I'm sure, let's hope it was working. And good point upthread: London buses don't take cash, it's either Oyster card or contactless bank cards, which should make the attackers easier to trace, but maybe not if their Oysters aren't registered. Murderers have been caught by their Oyster cards incredibly.

Stonewall don't even seem to have made the connection that these two women were being told to perform sexually for these men. This is an additional horror in this case.

barelove · 07/06/2019 14:43

In the Daily Mail article it includes a transcript from one of the women's facebook post after the attack where she writes:
'I just hope that in June, Pride Month, stuff like this can be spoken out loudly so they STOP HAPPENING!'

Good luck expecting pride to speak out for lesbians Sad

OvaHere · 07/06/2019 14:44

Blimey they actually took notice of the twitter thread! That's something I guess.

NotTerfNorCis · 07/06/2019 14:44

Pretty much every mention I've seen about this on Twitter is mysteriously blaming it on transphobes. One well known eejit is even blaming it on people who condemned the attack on Julie Bindel.

OvaHere · 07/06/2019 14:46

Yes Floral it's depressing it needed to be amended in the first place.

I'm going to assume their skills at writing about the L are a bit rusty these days.

Melroses · 07/06/2019 14:48

In fact they use the W word twice! I may need a lie down...

Shock
OvaHere · 07/06/2019 14:50

I notice they haven't apologised on the Twitter thread and pointed out the amendment for clarity. Perhaps they are hoping the women on the thread will look like they made the complaints up.

Maurice169 · 07/06/2019 14:54

I think it’s absolutely disgusting what happened to these girls.
But I remember when my friend and I arrived here from Australia we didn’t know our way around; she and her boyfriend went into a very busy SoHo pub, sat in the corner with their drinks and started kissing, only to be abruptly asked to leave; on the way out she was pushed, shoved and spat at?! They realised they were in a gay pub.
I must say we were shocked by the reaction of people in the pub, I think we were all a bit naive?

Mammajay · 07/06/2019 14:56

Truly shocking and very sad.

GodDammitAmy · 07/06/2019 14:59

They would never have done this if the women involved were overweight / middle aged etc.

I think it's more to the point that it wouldn't have got reported on so extensively if the women involved were overweight / middle aged.

FloralBunting · 07/06/2019 15:00

Yes, I'm quite the massive scourge of violence against straight couples from gay people needs to be highlighted to balance out all this uncomfortable stuff about two lesbians being assaulted on a bus by a group of men.Hmm

Ova I think you're quite right - Stonewall are attempting a little bit of gaslighty Twitter bullshit, aren't they? "What do you mean we never mentioned lesbians? It's right there in the statement."

Stonewall can fuck off.
