What about the women's world cup?!

Hi everyone, I read a couple of threads on the sports bit of Mumsnet and realised I was only reading about men's football. The women's world cup starts on 7th June and it's a really important year for supporting and promoting the game for women and girls. For those that don't know, a bit of history is that the women’s game was huge in the UK between the world wars (crowds of 55,000 with 14,000 waiting outside!), and large numbers of working class factory women playing in teams all over the country over many years - becoming household names and raising lots of money for returned soldiers and mining communities. Then the FA banned women from playing, for 50 years. When the FA finally lifted the ban in the 70s, women players faced horrendous treatment and the game has been struggling to come back ever since.

So it's brilliant that football is having a comeback. Here's where it's on in London londonist.com/london/sport/womens-world-cup-2019-football-where-to-watch-london-screenings

Agreed, and I don't like the new rule. I think the few times a good penalty is saved makes for really good football, and this will make them rarer.

FermatsTheorem · 20/06/2019 13:58

The premiership have already announced (can't remember if it was today's telegraph or times) that they won't be applying it next season.
Because as a pp explained, a penalty is meant to rectifa missed chance at scoring, so should offer a chance, not a guaranteed goal. The new rule makes it impossible for keepers.

Well done England. Feel really sorry for the Scots. Saw the documentary about them on iplayer.
More very basic questions from me:
How many players are actually on the team? Do goalies ever get substituted? Do players always play with the same numbers? Who are the top English women’s teams? Lyon seems to be a main one in France, I’ve watched 2 of theirs as well.

HiHoToffee · 20/06/2019 17:28

The world cup squads consist of 23 players, all with their own shirt numbers. Shirt numbers don't change during a tournament. Goalies can be substituted but it rarely happens, usually because of injury. Sometimes they change goalies before a penalty shoot out.

Last year's teams in the FA Women's Super League (WSL) were Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea, Birmingham, Bristol, Reading, Liverpool, West Ham, Brighton, Everton, Yeovil

HiHoToffee · 20/06/2019 17:36

I am watching The Netherlands v Canada. Canada had a penalty changed to a free kick and a goal disallowed for offside, Holland have hit the bar and post. Hup Holland!

Needmoresleep · 23/06/2019 15:16

Not long to go!

What about the women's world cup?!

I have no idea if someone has already posted something like this but last night or the night before I saw Sandy Toksvig talking about women's football and she was saying that after the war women's football was EXTREMELY popular. Then it was banned from the place (I'm not sure if it was a pitch or pitches) for 50 years (!) so it wouldn't become more popular than the men's Angry. She was on some sports programme. I hadn't known that before but it doesn't surprise me. Apologies if I'm just repeating what someone else may have already said in more detail. I just found it interesting and a new bit of feminist trivia I wasn't aware of.

ThePankhurstConnection · 23/06/2019 15:30

Oh - I also thought people on this particular thread would find it interesting.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 23/06/2019 15:39

I knew that about women's football being banned for fear it would become more popular than the men's game.

I have to say, as a football fan in general I'm very much enjoying the WWC. There's an awful lot less rolling about and diving than there is in the men's game. Also better football across the board imo.

Erin Cuthbert and Jen Beattie have to be my stand out players. I'm obviously biased as a Scot but I think we were done out of a couple of penalties and unfairly penalised with ambiguous VAR decisions.

That said, I'm still watching!

Taswama · 23/06/2019 15:45

As a non football fan, I’m enjoying it but really disappointed at the lack of coverage away from the BBC. Waitrose today had 6 or more different sticker packs but not the World Cup. I made a point of asking a member of staff where they were and why they weren’t stocking them. Guardian sport still has mostly on cricket, cycling etc, will be interested to see if they cover netball next month - last netball article I saw there was a report of the team captain retiring to start a family.

MockerstheFeManist · 23/06/2019 17:00

They elbow, spit and kick lumps out of you.

Cameroon do not play nicely.

HiHoToffee · 23/06/2019 17:18

Their no7, Onguene, got booed for unsporting behaviour in the Holland match. She is a good player with Neymar tendencies.

HiHoToffee · 23/06/2019 17:18

VAR...

HiHoToffee · 23/06/2019 17:20

Yes! Right decision. ⚽️⚽️

HiHoToffee · 23/06/2019 17:23

What was that all about!?

historysock · 23/06/2019 17:43

Blimey Cameroon are not having fun with the VAR this afternoon... think this will get a bit feisty now...

HiHoToffee · 23/06/2019 17:45

Again the VAR decision was correct, but oh dear Cameroon

sluj · 23/06/2019 17:46

I feel sorry for the ref

historysock · 23/06/2019 17:48

Why are the neutrals booing England?
That said it's working because we're falling to pieces here....

LimitIsUp · 23/06/2019 17:50

I can't understand the neutrals either, given the deplorable behaviour of the Cameroon side

HiHoToffee · 23/06/2019 17:51

Get in! Great goal

historysock · 23/06/2019 17:51

Well that's the best answer from England...Smile

blackistheneworange · 23/06/2019 17:51

It's disappointing- I hope they see the footage and really why they weren't allowed.

3-0, come on!

Jsmith99 · 23/06/2019 17:58

Bardsley’s clearances are a concern. Twice she has given it away to Cameroon players when she should have hoofed it into row Z.

MockerstheFeManist · 23/06/2019 18:02

Why are the neutrals booing England?

Because they'e French. And because Cameroon is part of the Francophonie, the French 'Commonwealth.'

So now someone needs to sit down with the Cams and talk about the offside law.
