What about the women's world cup?!

Hi everyone, I read a couple of threads on the sports bit of Mumsnet and realised I was only reading about men's football. The women's world cup starts on 7th June and it's a really important year for supporting and promoting the game for women and girls. For those that don't know, a bit of history is that the women’s game was huge in the UK between the world wars (crowds of 55,000 with 14,000 waiting outside!), and large numbers of working class factory women playing in teams all over the country over many years - becoming household names and raising lots of money for returned soldiers and mining communities. Then the FA banned women from playing, for 50 years. When the FA finally lifted the ban in the 70s, women players faced horrendous treatment and the game has been struggling to come back ever since.

So it's brilliant that football is having a comeback. Here's where it's on in London londonist.com/london/sport/womens-world-cup-2019-football-where-to-watch-london-screenings

My uncle coached women's youth soccer in the US (after a career in top flight football and Premier League youth coaching in the UK), so I'm throwing my support behind the Yanks.

I have the pregame show on here in the US. The WWC has been in the mainstream news like I have never seen before, so I think we'll definitely see record viewership of the match here. It's going to be an excellent match.

I love the sound of the crowd!

LimitIsUp · 07/07/2019 16:37

Brilliant Dutch keeper

orangeshoebox · 07/07/2019 16:38

wow the dutch goalie is good

InTheHeatofLisbon · 07/07/2019 16:40

Actually I'm not neutral, I really want the USA to win because then Trump will have to ask them to the Whitehouse and Megan Rapinoe can tell him to fuck right off Grin

Agreed about the Dutch keeper, she's the sole reason it's not a cricket score already!

LimitIsUp · 07/07/2019 16:47

I really want the Dutch to win (unlikely as it is) - my reasons are quite base

MissConductUS · 07/07/2019 16:54

I love the sound of the crowd!

Me too. I'm watching on our home theater system with surround sound and it's like being in the middle of the crowd.

The Dutch have done good job of shutting down the American offense so far, which messes with their strategy of getting a goal up early to take control of the match.

LimitIsUp · 07/07/2019 17:19

Finally, a correct VAR decision

MissConductUS · 07/07/2019 17:25

Nice goal by Rapinoe.

A fair number of yellow cards being handed out today.

HiHoToffee · 07/07/2019 17:32

Oh Miedema just shoot...

HiHoToffee · 07/07/2019 17:57

Ah well, it wasn't to be. The best team won but very proud of the Orange Lionesses ⚽️

I thoroughly enjoyed this Women's World Cup and the future is looking good !

MissConductUS · 07/07/2019 18:06

As I mentioned up thread, Lavelle is one to watch.

This has been great for the sport here.

In a live news shot from a bar after the match, the American crowd can be heard shouting "Fuck Trump" in the background:

And there were the the boos for Infantino and chants of "Equal Pay" all around the stadium

HiHoToffee · 12/07/2019 13:00

BBC will be showing all the Euro 2021 matches

Plenty of time to find better commentators Wink

Londoners might note that the first Arsenal and Chelsea matches are at the Etihad and Stamford Bridge respectively. Probably the first time women's matches have been played in the men's stadium. A really good chance for families to experience football in major venues at a fraction of the cost.

(And perhaps makes up in part for Chelsea women having to play their European Cup semi-final in the Spring at Kingsmeadow.)

Igneococcus Neil Doncaster is a twat. The SPFL has been turning on itself for the past season, unwilling to deal with the ugly side of football which unfortunately reared its head last season. They command absolutely no respect, so I'm not even slightly surprised by this patronising token to the women's team.

Shameful.
