What about the women's world cup?!

Hi everyone, I read a couple of threads on the sports bit of Mumsnet and realised I was only reading about men's football. The women's world cup starts on 7th June and it's a really important year for supporting and promoting the game for women and girls. For those that don't know, a bit of history is that the women’s game was huge in the UK between the world wars (crowds of 55,000 with 14,000 waiting outside!), and large numbers of working class factory women playing in teams all over the country over many years - becoming household names and raising lots of money for returned soldiers and mining communities. Then the FA banned women from playing, for 50 years. When the FA finally lifted the ban in the 70s, women players faced horrendous treatment and the game has been struggling to come back ever since.

So it's brilliant that football is having a comeback. Here's where it's on in London londonist.com/london/sport/womens-world-cup-2019-football-where-to-watch-london-screenings

What a fabulous squad of women footballers, eh?

Next stop: Japan.

Go sisters!

Take us through as Top of Group C, if you can.

So excited by and for you all.

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 14/06/2019 22:32

Wonderful. I'm here in Nice and guess what? They're playing 10 hours drive away ffs. Honestly.....

However great game. Well done England.

Taswama · 15/06/2019 09:11

Well done England! Well done Argentina’s goalie as well!
I bought myself a sticker book at WHSmiths yesterday. I’d seen football stickers at our local Tesco and asked about ones for the World Cup but they looked at me blankly (they had the books and stickers for the men’s last year), so I asked again when I was in WHS. They just said - over there - so I figured I’d better buy it!

CountFosco · 15/06/2019 11:36

Fair play to WH Smith they've got the female football legends books as well. SportDirect had a world cup display so I bought the DDs tshirts. Strips were there as well and looked great but I'm not paying £45. They did look fab though.

Taswama · 15/06/2019 13:07

Anyone on Twitter want to congratulate WHSmith or shame Tesco?

Michelleoftheresistance · 15/06/2019 22:13

Well done England!

Well done to the Argentinian goalie too, what a game she had.

LimitIsUp · 16/06/2019 18:17

Didn't see any previous USA games but just watching them playing Cihile and cripes they are good

DoctorTwo · 16/06/2019 18:42

In no way was that a pelanty, given after VAR. The foul was outside the area.

MockerstheFeManist · 16/06/2019 18:44

Disagree about the yanks, who are good, but also flat-track bullies.

In sport when it's a mis-match, you either ease off when you have a comfortable lead and avoid injuries, or you steamroller your opponents like the All-Blacks but stop celebrating like you've won the world cup after every score.

LimitIsUp · 16/06/2019 22:50

Meh, I have a 16 year old dd who plays football and a 15 year old ds who plays football - they don't spare their opponents. It's okay for women to be competitive in sport.

I don't want USA to win - I want England to win, but the USA are the team to beat

LimitIsUp · 16/06/2019 23:03

I have enjoyed some of the performances from the 'weaker' sides - valiant effort from the Chilean keeper today

And my 90 year old dad said tonight that he has enjoyed watching some of the women's matches more then the men's game. Result!

HiHoToffee · 19/06/2019 21:31

Missed the first half, England are a bit sloppy, Scotland are on fire ⚽️

HiHoToffee · 19/06/2019 21:37

Oh dear, hope I haven't jinxed it for Scotland...

derxa · 19/06/2019 21:39

Oh c'mon girls

HiHoToffee · 19/06/2019 21:41

Yes Ellen White!

Needmoresleep · 19/06/2019 21:44

Yay!

We have tickets for the next England match in Valanciennes.(Just boasting..)

FermatsTheorem · 19/06/2019 21:56

Fuck no!!!!

I hate being a Scotland fan.

Sad

[Grits teeth] well done England.

HiHoToffee · 19/06/2019 21:58

VAR has been very harsh on Scotland

FermatsTheorem · 19/06/2019 22:19

It's a hell of a good performance from England 3 out of 3. (Though you do need to sort out your defence. Japan just didn't have luck with them but there were several times they went through your back four like a hot knife through butter. You can bet the US and Germany will be analysing the video).

moofolk · 19/06/2019 23:20

YES ENGLAND!

Does sound like the Scotland Argentina match would have been the one to watch though, blimey what excitement. And heartbreak.

I work that out as England playing China on Sunday. Should be a good one

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 19/06/2019 23:31

Another good game although I think the second goal was completely against the run of play and it was a shame for Japan because they played well just couldn't finish it.

youkiddingme · 19/06/2019 23:34

From the pics I''ve seen, and I can't judge how good the camera angles are, it looks as though the penalty against Scotland wasn't a pen (outside the area) and the keeper had her heel above the line when the ball was kicked so it was a legit save. I'm an England fan so it's not sour grapes, but I'll try and watch proper highlights tomorrow if I can find them.

SandAndSea · 19/06/2019 23:41

Great game for England again tonight.

I think our women are much better than our men.

LimitIsUp · 20/06/2019 12:31

You lucky thing Needmoresleep - enjoy.

Commiserations to Scotland - what a cruel, cruel way to go out.

Well done England but the second half was sloppy and worrying - teams like USA, France and Germany will punish us for those mistakes. Still, its good to see that we can score goals in the third third and make decent chances. I am loving watching these strong athletic women being great role models on the pitch

MockerstheFeManist · 20/06/2019 13:10

The rule change coming at the start of this tournament rather than on 8 July when it finishes is absurd.

(And not discrimination against women because the Euro Under-21s are also having to deal with this.)

Goalkeepers have been coached for years based on the old rule. (You must not put your foot down in front of the line) and now must keep a foot on the line.

FIFA are arseholes, as ever.

(And oooh, Monsieur Platini, we'd like you to aidez-nous avec nos enquetes.)
