What about the women's world cup?!

Hi everyone, I read a couple of threads on the sports bit of Mumsnet and realised I was only reading about men's football. The women's world cup starts on 7th June and it's a really important year for supporting and promoting the game for women and girls. For those that don't know, a bit of history is that the women’s game was huge in the UK between the world wars (crowds of 55,000 with 14,000 waiting outside!), and large numbers of working class factory women playing in teams all over the country over many years - becoming household names and raising lots of money for returned soldiers and mining communities. Then the FA banned women from playing, for 50 years. When the FA finally lifted the ban in the 70s, women players faced horrendous treatment and the game has been struggling to come back ever since.

So it's brilliant that football is having a comeback. Here's where it's on in London londonist.com/london/sport/womens-world-cup-2019-football-where-to-watch-london-screenings

Another example of companies not caring about women's football. I don't have a screenshot to prove it unfortunately, but when the new England kit was released, DH went straight online to get a top for DD, whose favourite player is Parris. When you clicked on the drop down menu to personalise the short with players' names, he got "7- Paris". Even when he emailed to complain, they couldn't quite understand the problem. Hmm

I had not one clue about women's football being huge in the past until banned by the FA. Wow Shock

I am so keen to contribute to this thread in coming weeks. Ladies, it doesn't matter if you're Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish or English, what matters is that you find your own way of supporting women blazing their own trail in a strongly male dominated sport.
If you're interested in the human stories, check this little film out:

The BBC are covering all of it. I'm going to England v Scotland on Sunday, super excited!!

Clarew201 · 05/06/2019 18:49

wow...so glad I started this thread (new to Mumsnet). The film that inspired me was 'when football banned women' it's brilliant and should be compulsory watching across the UK!

Lucky you murasaki

FermatsTheorem · 07/06/2019 11:41

France v S Korea tonight!

ScottishDoll · 07/06/2019 11:45

I have set reminders on the tellebox to record all women's football, then just to be sure all women's sports programmes.

My thinking is that if as many people as possible do this and get the viewing figures up the coverage should increase and maybe these female champions will get a decent wage one day like their male counterparts.

I will buy extra crisps today, the beer is already in the fridge Grin

RuffleCrow · 07/06/2019 11:48

Thanks for this. I'll be watching with my dcs.

Lamaha · 07/06/2019 11:58

It's a Googledoodle...

Yes, VERY excited about the World Cup and happy to have a thread about it, hope this is a rolling one like having your mates round to watch the game?!

I think we (England) have an incredibly strong team and a bit gutted we're playing Scotland so early.

Can I sidetrack to Nevilles though? Of the Neville siblings, Tracy as the England netball coach is more the top of her game than either of her brothers, nowhere near as well paid and is now stepping down to start a family. Can we imagine a man having to do that?!

Still ... Phil seems to be doing a great job.

France v South Korea

We are ready for the opening ceremony ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️

Nettersrunboulder86 · 07/06/2019 20:08

I’m super excited too! There’s loads of interest at my work, we’ve got a sweepstake and my colleague was sourcing a wall planner for his six year old son to keep track of he matches this morning! It’s great to see so many people supporting and showing an interest!

Taswama · 07/06/2019 20:48

We have a sweepstake too, organised by me as I said I would last year! Have been swotting up on the teams too.

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 07/06/2019 20:53

Watching with great enjoyment.

Excited for England v Scotland tomorrow

HiHoToffee · 07/06/2019 20:54

France is making it look easy.
Enjoyed that first half and VAR was spot on.

HiHoToffee · 07/06/2019 21:05

ps England v Scotland is on Sunday

HiHoToffee · 07/06/2019 22:06

Well done France, deserved win.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 07/06/2019 22:12

Loved watching France play - so much skill! OH thought their skill level was better than the men’s game - especially the taking of corners. We’re big fans of the women’s game in this house and make an effort to watch the games. Hoping good viewing figures will mean more gets televised.

JackyHolyoake · 07/06/2019 22:15

I tell you what! That Wendy Renard in the French team is a bit dangerous, ain't she? [No doubt our England team is well aware of her and has tactics to deal with her skills .. I say, hopefully!]

CountFosco · 07/06/2019 22:29

DD1 plays football so we've been discussing this since last summer. Trouble is in this house the parent support Scotland and the children support England so there may be trouble on Sunday!

As well as the Scottish programme linked to above there's this on England. Visa has some mini profiles of some of the players on their website. We've also got some of the Ultimate football heros books for DD1 and much to her joy Kelly Smith, Alex Morgan and Marta are all left footers like her so she's really identifying with her footballing heros right now. I keep telling her how lucky she is, that when I was growing up football wasn't an option for girls.

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 07/06/2019 22:44

HiHoToffee I knew that but I've been off with the kids today because they're on half-term and so got confused & thought it was Saturday today. Which is actually brilliant news for me because I've gained an extra day.

HiHoToffee · 07/06/2019 23:13

Grin enjoy your extra day
