What about the women's world cup?!

Hi everyone, I read a couple of threads on the sports bit of Mumsnet and realised I was only reading about men's football. The women's world cup starts on 7th June and it's a really important year for supporting and promoting the game for women and girls. For those that don't know, a bit of history is that the women’s game was huge in the UK between the world wars (crowds of 55,000 with 14,000 waiting outside!), and large numbers of working class factory women playing in teams all over the country over many years - becoming household names and raising lots of money for returned soldiers and mining communities. Then the FA banned women from playing, for 50 years. When the FA finally lifted the ban in the 70s, women players faced horrendous treatment and the game has been struggling to come back ever since.

So it's brilliant that football is having a comeback. Here's where it's on in London londonist.com/london/sport/womens-world-cup-2019-football-where-to-watch-london-screenings

It does the Netherlands have lions? I need to get to the bottom of this now!

JackyHolyoake · 02/07/2019 18:30

Will I get banned for wanting England to win

What about the women's world cup?!
LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/07/2019 18:30

Sorry but the US has a history of footie being a ‘girls game’.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 02/07/2019 18:31

Maybe that's why they're the best in the world? Well the women's team are anyway.

Shame they keep insisting on calling it soccer though 😂

JackyHolyoake · 02/07/2019 18:32

The Dutch badge also has one lion, and the women are called 'Leeuwinnen' aka lionesses

Well, we have three lions .. so there! Na, na, na na, na! Wink

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/07/2019 18:34

We have a rampant one. Apparently it traditionally symbolises courage, nobility, royalty, strength, stateliness and valour.

When I was a kid I just thought it was cross (as in ‘rampage’). A bit like Godzilla.

MockerstheFeManist · 02/07/2019 18:35

It wouldn't be so bad if they called it soccer instead of sahker. They seem to have no idea about the derivation, an abbreviation of AsSOCiation Football, and often think it's because you sock it to the ball...

FIFA should order them to change their name and stop using a rugby fraternity insult.

(See also the tautologically redundant 'field hockey,' as if there were any other kind.)

InTheHeatofLisbon · 02/07/2019 18:35

Have you seen the parody of the 3 Lions song about the rampant lion?

It's very funny (in total jest no offence meant).

MockerstheFeManist · 02/07/2019 18:38

England, Scotland, Netherlands and Belgium all have lions.
USA and Germany have eagles.
France has a chicken.

JackyHolyoake · 02/07/2019 18:39

I prefer a rampant lioness , myself Grin

I have to say the American player with the messiah complex is getting on my nerves a bit. She looks a bit smug. It’s an amazing photos of her though doing ‘the pose’.

I hope US wins just so she can tell Trump where to stick his invite. Apparently he had a Twitter tantrum when she said she shouldn’t go and he ranted about black employment figures (she is white - very white).

HiHoToffee · 02/07/2019 18:41

Grin Jacky
Tonight is all about the three lions on the shirt, tomorrow the orange lion will roar

Let's hope our teams meet in the final on Sunday, eh?

And may the best team win on that day.

It's a rooster, actually. Very apt, as it's the only bird that still shows off even when knee-deep in shit, according to a famous French comedian.

HiHoToffee · 02/07/2019 19:57

GO ENGLAND!!! ⚽️

HiHoToffee · 02/07/2019 20:10

sluj · 02/07/2019 20:13

Anyone else having trouble hearing the BBC commentator over the crowds at times? They are not very animated.

HiHoToffee · 02/07/2019 20:19

GET IN!

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 02/07/2019 20:30

I've got it on the tv, in an act of support with womens sport being on prime time tv.

Agree about the commentators. WEll, the bloke.

Seems a bit bored.

I don't know enough about football to judge - but, it seems to me there is an equal amount of pony tail flicking, but, a lot less diving and whining as compared to the mens game.
