What about the women's world cup?!

Hi everyone, I read a couple of threads on the sports bit of Mumsnet and realised I was only reading about men's football. The women's world cup starts on 7th June and it's a really important year for supporting and promoting the game for women and girls. For those that don't know, a bit of history is that the women’s game was huge in the UK between the world wars (crowds of 55,000 with 14,000 waiting outside!), and large numbers of working class factory women playing in teams all over the country over many years - becoming household names and raising lots of money for returned soldiers and mining communities. Then the FA banned women from playing, for 50 years. When the FA finally lifted the ban in the 70s, women players faced horrendous treatment and the game has been struggling to come back ever since.

So it's brilliant that football is having a comeback. Here's where it's on in London londonist.com/london/sport/womens-world-cup-2019-football-where-to-watch-london-screenings

Gutted we lost!
Had radio 5 on briefly with sound on TV muted but they were ahead of the TV so I heard Lucy Bronze’s not goal before I saw it!

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 02/07/2019 22:03

Gutted like a kipper

PickledGulag · 02/07/2019 22:03

Well done England!

It was a good game but it can't be coincidence that the USA, a team properly paid, trained and invested in, are on course to win again. The rest of the world needs to match women's sport profile and investment to men's if they want better results.

HiHoToffee · 02/07/2019 22:05

I blame the waistcoat, the curse of the waistcoat.

littlbrowndog · 02/07/2019 22:05

Aieee sad for the lionesses

Great tournament. Have loved it.

awaynboilyurheid · 02/07/2019 22:16

Shame about the captain missing that penalty, her head was down and she looked defeated before she took it, it might have turned things around. There were many USA players falling down at least thing , England were good but outplayed

moofolk · 02/07/2019 22:18

Should have given the penalty to Lucy Bronze

MissConductUS · 02/07/2019 22:55

They are so tight those Americans

They were. Smile

Brilliant match, well played by both teams.

MissConductUS · 02/07/2019 23:00

It was a good game but it can't be coincidence that the USA, a team properly paid, trained and invested in, are on course to win again.

There is a lawsuit going on now over pay, but they may well be better funded than average.

I had a bit of commentary on what's behind the rise of women's sports in the US here:

The Role of Title IX in US Women's Athletics

England v USA, most-watched programme of 2019

MockerstheFeManist · 03/07/2019 13:15

Now this here 'teacup' celebration thing?

Certainly can't be arsed to get upset about it, but the implications of it are very unpleasant and so it needs to be called out.

Context: I'm still angry over Trevor Noah's 'joke' about the Les Blues World Cup win and how black people cannot possibly be French. The resort to cheap and lazy stereotyes about other countries seems to be no big deal.

Imagine if they did a little jig when they scored against Ireland, or some kangeroo hops for the Australians.

It's arrogant and cheap and they need calling out.

HiHoToffee · 03/07/2019 14:51

It's arrogant and cheap and they need calling out
Exactly

MockerstheFeManist · 03/07/2019 14:56

It's the sort of thing you would see in US College sport, mocking your opponent's badge or motto etc.

Trying to think of an equally inappropriate response. Perhaps a high school shooting with the scorer gunning down the rest of the team then shooting themselves.

Hilarious.

HiHoToffee · 03/07/2019 15:17

I didn't know that about college sports but nonetheless you expect better on international level.

Needmoresleep · 03/07/2019 19:34

DD is sitting above the BBC studio so got to see them putting make up on Dion Dublin's head. She suggests some awkward body language between pundits...at least till the cameras start rolling.

Needmoresleep · 03/07/2019 19:35

French presenters sit on IKEA kitchen chairs.

Taswama · 03/07/2019 22:17

Can someone explain why it’s gone into extra time? Only just turned on, was it nil-nil at full time?

AutumnCrow · 03/07/2019 22:25

Yes, 0-0 at full-time.

HiHoToffee · 03/07/2019 22:43

Yes! Holland in the world cup final ⚽️

littlbrowndog · 03/07/2019 22:44

USA gonna win this

HiHoToffee · 03/07/2019 22:48

Yeah most likely but I am happy for the Dutch Lionesses.

MissConductUS · 03/07/2019 23:54

Rapinoe will be back in the line up for the final. That's going to be a problem for the Dutch.

sluj · 04/07/2019 07:48

I'm rooting for Holland, what about everyone else?

MockerstheFeManist · 04/07/2019 08:05

The Dutch aren't nearly as good as England. Barring an upset this is a foregone conclusion.

The USA will be remembered as far and away the best team, without the dignity or grace of true champions. Arrogant and boorish and very much in need of being taken down a peg.

HiHoToffee · 04/07/2019 08:45

USA's strenght, speed and pressure on the ball will be difficult for the Dutch, like it was for France and England. The European countries are catching up and I think at the next world cup we will see their dominance.

I remember 4 years ago that the English commentators were saying that goalkeepers training was a new thing, this tournament the goalies have been excellent and nobody is talking about smaller goals anymore.

We just have to hope that people will start supporting local womens football and that the investment will continue, especially on grass roots level.
