What about the women's world cup?!

Hi everyone, I read a couple of threads on the sports bit of Mumsnet and realised I was only reading about men's football. The women's world cup starts on 7th June and it's a really important year for supporting and promoting the game for women and girls. For those that don't know, a bit of history is that the women’s game was huge in the UK between the world wars (crowds of 55,000 with 14,000 waiting outside!), and large numbers of working class factory women playing in teams all over the country over many years - becoming household names and raising lots of money for returned soldiers and mining communities. Then the FA banned women from playing, for 50 years. When the FA finally lifted the ban in the 70s, women players faced horrendous treatment and the game has been struggling to come back ever since.

So it's brilliant that football is having a comeback. Here's where it's on in London londonist.com/london/sport/womens-world-cup-2019-football-where-to-watch-london-screenings

We had a rolling thread for the last world cup. Good idea to have a have a thread for this one.

England and Scotland in the same group! Gulp. (Still, as a Scot, it's just nice to see a world cup we've actually qualified for).

tobee · 04/06/2019 17:43

I'm gonna be watching and supporting! Looking forward to it.

tobee · 04/06/2019 17:46

And the Women's Ashes series.

Remember last time a BBC 5live reporter (male) doing a quick promo for the Women's Ashes coverage. And then saying "and then after that something really exciting - the Ashes!" Angry

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/06/2019 17:47

I don't football, so I don't know if this is world cup or not but this is excellent:

FloralBunting · 04/06/2019 17:52

Way back in the mists of time, I followed football, and, being part of the society I am in, I imbibed lots of crap about how the 'women's game' wasn't as good, and I actually went along with it for ages.

Part of my feminist awakening, after being a card carrying 'Lady Against Feminism' was discovering how enormous women's football had been until it was banned. One of my determined ambitions is to get back into following the game with a new perspective, so I shall definitely be watching some games, though it will be a steep learning curve as I don't know any of the players!

LetsSplashMummy · 04/06/2019 17:54

It's definitely on TV, my DDs football team (age 7/8) are all getting together to watch Scotland vs England at the weekend. I'm pretty sure this is the case for all the year groups/teams at our primary. From seeing how excited they are, I'd recommend it, the fact it's women does add to the excitement for girls, I think.

FingonTheValiant · 04/06/2019 18:08

I'm going to see the second England match, I'm really looking forward to it! We've been really promoting it in my school. Will be watching some of the other games on TV. I'm not a huge football fan, but trying to make sure the boys see as many women's matches as they did men's in the last men's world cup.

tobee · 04/06/2019 18:08

Better time zone than last time as well Grin

MrsKCastle · 04/06/2019 18:58

My 7 year old DD is so excited about this. She's just started getting into football and it's fantastic for her to have such good role models.

The women don't even have their photos in the squad list, just blank icons.

ISaySteadyOn · 04/06/2019 19:32

Will it be on the BBC at all? DD2 has just begun playing and loves it. Would be good for her to see grown women playing.

HiHoToffee · 04/06/2019 19:39

From the BBC website:

BBC Sport will have live coverage of every World Cup match across TV, radio, the Red Button and online from the group stages all the way through to the final.

The opening match between hosts France and South Korea on Friday, 7 June will be shown live on BBC One from Paris.

Home nations England and Scotland go head-to-head in their opening group match on Sunday, 9 June and you can watch that live on BBC One from Nice.

The final is also being shown on BBC One from 16:00 BST on Sunday, 7 July.

HiHoToffee · 04/06/2019 19:40

We had a few good threads going for the men's world cup last year, I am sure we can do the same for the women ⚽️

coconutcurls · 04/06/2019 19:47

I'm excited about the Women's World Cup! The women's game is growing every year and I want to share the excitement with the children in my class.

nickymanchester · 04/06/2019 19:48

Sorry, I started another thread on this same subject without noticing yours first. I didn't mean to do that.

There are two really interesting articles on the BBC website about the 1971 Women's World Cup which England took part in with lots of photos and some video. It's really interesting especially if if you're old enough to remember the 1970s:-

The lost lionesses - England's forgotten football trailblazers

Mexico 1971: When women's football hit the big time

Sorry about starting a duplicate thread.

HiHoToffee · 04/06/2019 19:53

I just read that article, very interesting.

Clare Balding did a documentary about the FA banning women's football which is also worth watching.

nickymanchester · 04/06/2019 19:57

ISaySteadyOn

As HiHoToffee said, yes, they'll all be on the BBC but quite a few of the early matches are only going to be on the red button or online.

A full list is here:-

FloralBunting · 04/06/2019 21:11

nickymanchester, no worries about duplicates - wouldn't it be cool if one day the women's game was as big as it used to be and lots of threads were a matter of course?Smile

Taswama · 04/06/2019 21:22

I’m not really interested in football but have organised a sweepstake at work out of principle!
The guardian has been doing an interesting series of bluffers guides to the teams so I drop bits into conversation occasionally!

NoseringGirl · 04/06/2019 21:38

I live football and am very much looking forward to the World Cup!

NoseringGirl · 04/06/2019 21:39

I meant to say love football but so much of my life revolves around it that 'live' is probably accurate too BlushGrin

FuckItFuckerArse · 04/06/2019 22:14

My thread (why has fifa not bothered to put player photos up, just generic female icons?) Is full of people saying womens football doesn't interest them. Hmm So because they're not interested, FIFA shouldn't even bother with the photos. Confused

FuckItFuckerArse · 04/06/2019 22:16

There's a real basic need by some people to not only accept sexism, but to try and justify it. Like it's only natural.

FloralBunting · 04/06/2019 22:25

You see all the time on FWR the sentiment that because the specific poster doesn't care about a women's issue, it's unimportant. I think that's a very common reaction that takes work to overcome - it took me a while to get to grips with it in myself, and I'm probably still not there.

HiHoToffee · 04/06/2019 22:27

Women's football is slow and boring, just like the men's champions league final then Grin

It seems that more and more people disagree with those posters
