What about the women's world cup?!

Hi everyone, I read a couple of threads on the sports bit of Mumsnet and realised I was only reading about men's football. The women's world cup starts on 7th June and it's a really important year for supporting and promoting the game for women and girls. For those that don't know, a bit of history is that the women’s game was huge in the UK between the world wars (crowds of 55,000 with 14,000 waiting outside!), and large numbers of working class factory women playing in teams all over the country over many years - becoming household names and raising lots of money for returned soldiers and mining communities. Then the FA banned women from playing, for 50 years. When the FA finally lifted the ban in the 70s, women players faced horrendous treatment and the game has been struggling to come back ever since.

So it's brilliant that football is having a comeback. Here's where it's on in London londonist.com/london/sport/womens-world-cup-2019-football-where-to-watch-london-screenings

We have tickets to some of the quarter and semi finals. Lets hope England get through the group stages.

Student DD plays, and her dad has decided to share her interest/enthusiasm. To be honest he likes watching most team sports, but it is nice that he takes an interest in a woman's game rather than just expect her to take an interest in men's Premier League.

The kit is nice and would make a good, albeit expensive, present. Its quite fitted, so the arms came out tight on my sporty daughter and she had to go up a size. Apparently the first time England women have had their own design rather than just use the men's one.

Very entertaining game between Germany and China.

Seriously horrible sexism from the BBC here, please complain and get them to keep it real.

I saw that earlier and was very unimpressed though I hadn't seen the article. Then I saw Gabby Logan's response and she was saying it was direct quotes from the footballer. Still not keen on the way it was presented though.

I'll actually be in Nice this weekend and I'm really disappointed that I'm flying there on Thursday leaving on Sunday so I won't be able to watch a match. I didn't realise this was on when I booked my weekend away but actually it would have been lovely to have gone and watched England and supported our women.

I only take an interest in football when it's the world cup. Have done since 1986 (still remember listening to the final on my tiny, new portable radio). Get properly into it and always check the schedules, groups and results on the BBC website.

Instead of listing by country, the BBC list each team as England Women, Scotland Women, France Women etc.

Now I realise this is probably stupid of me, but they don't list the men's teams with Men at the end. So to me this reads as this is just the women's team, the real team is the other one and obviously, you don't need an added qualifier for the real team. They're just England, Scotland, France...

But there are no men's teams playing here. It's the women's world cup. Everyone knows it's the women playing. So why the clarifier if not to make that patronising distinction?

ScottishDoll · 08/06/2019 22:03

That is an excellent point.

HiHoToffee · 08/06/2019 22:14

FIFA still haven't managed to upload all player's profile photos.

I enjoyed Spain v South Africa, was hoping for an upset but Spain was too strong the second half. Penalties and a second yellow didn't help South Africa.

Didn't see Norway v Nigeria.

Hello all, new username for the occasion! The sun even appears to be coming out in Preston as well - must be a sign Grin

I'm going to go and read the article about the Jamaican team now.

Like the namechange, and Sam Kerr just scored for Australia Grin

I was just talking with a friend of mine who lives in the USA (haven't spoken to her in ages) and we got talking about the World Cup.

It turns out that where she lives (in Portland) women's football is actually really big and the local professional women's team regularly get upwards of 15,000 people attending their matches.

There was even quite a long article in The Guardian about the team earlier this week in the run up to the World Cup:-

Are the Portland Thorns the ideal template for a women's football club?

It's a really interesting read about what they've done over the years to make the team so successful both in terms of results and commercially as well.

One thing that my friend did say concerned her is who she will support if England end up playing USA. This is because her home team make up most of the US squad. So does she support the women from her local team that she supports regularly or does she support the women of England?

She is very much English and supports her country but also feels a connection to the actual players from her home team who make up the majority of the US squad.

Come on England! Looking forward to watching this match

Enjoyed all the matches I've watched so far.

HiHoToffee · 09/06/2019 17:00

Perfect antidote to the boring men's game, same result please.
Come on England!

HiHoToffee · 09/06/2019 17:58

Good first half, I thought the penalty was a bit harsh but very well taken, as was the second goal.

⚽️⚽️

MrsSnippyPants · 09/06/2019 18:05

I am quite sad that my granddaughter is a little too young to appreciate this. How I would have loved this as a young girl, seeing women play such fantastic football, being wonderful role models. Billy Bremner didn’t quite inspire me in the same way!

HiHoToffee · 09/06/2019 18:15

The standard of play is a lot higher than 4 years ago, especially the goalkeeping, and I have no doubt that it will keep improving.

FermatsTheorem · 09/06/2019 18:15

Despite being a Scot (we was robbed with the penalty) I'm enjoying this. It pains me to admit it but England are the class side, but the thing that's good is both sides are playing their hearts out. And Cuthbert is excellent up front. I think Emslie's looking great on the wing, as well. Much better to watch than the men's Champion's League final which was fucking turgid (and I say that as a Liverpool fan).

derxa · 09/06/2019 18:21

Watching Eng vs Scotland. Ropey penalty. Usual build up bias for England and Sally 'Cmon England' Nugent does my head in.

Toooldtobearsed2 · 09/06/2019 18:23

If you are really keen on supporting women in sport and want to see more 'fair play", then go along and watch a match.
I love, love, love women's rugby, prefer to the men's. I go and watch Darlington Sharks.
There are about 30 people there.
Women's sport will never be taken seriously by broadcasters unless there is grass roots support for it.
The English Women's football team is getting good support. Drill down to club level and it is dismal.

FermatsTheorem · 09/06/2019 18:28

Some of us do, Tooold - went to England v Italy in the 6 nations for instance. Hoping my local team will go into the women's superleague if it gets off the ground.

(But this is a footie thread not a proselytising about women's sport in general thread, much as the latter is a subject dear to my heart).

InTheHeatofLisbon · 09/06/2019 18:35

Never a penalty, but I'm loving the way that women's football is becoming huge now as it should be.

Shelly Kerr is a woman and a Scot I'm very proud of, and wee Erin Cuthbert is one to watch!

Still sore getting skelped by England though Grin although this side has managed what the men haven't in 21 years and qualified for a World Cup.

FermatsTheorem · 09/06/2019 18:36

yes yes yes yes yes!!!!!

FermatsTheorem · 09/06/2019 18:37

And thoroughly deserved too, Scotland have been ace for the last 10, 15 minutes.
