Can we start an anti "nail" campaign?

As a GP who frequently washes her hands, allotment owner and instrument player I really hate the trend for women to have immaculate nails that cost a fortune, scratch people and mean women can't do anything useful. Where t f did this horrible trend come from and how do we give women back the use of their wonderful hands?

Again this is so disingenuous. The OP is asking for an anti- nails campaign

Exactly. Except it actually got questioned for once instead of all the same opinion calling for a ban or a boycott or whatever which is what usually happens.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 02/06/2019 23:08

One of you must've jinxed me, one of my nails chipped. They never do that.Angry

LimeKiwi · 02/06/2019 23:14

Must be karma, my nail's don't chip as they're stubby bloke type nails, serves you right for having nails long enough to be able to chip!

Disclaimer - totally don't care what your nails are like and tongue firmly in cheek with that comment lol

Erythronium · 02/06/2019 23:15

It's horrible when all the feminists agree with one another isn't it Lime Kiwi?

Does PistonHeads have a Style and Beauty section I wonder.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 02/06/2019 23:21

Lime contrary to the opinion of others on this thread I can recognise sarcasm and tongue in cheek.
It's all good.

LimeKiwi · 02/06/2019 23:23

Nope, lost me now. Unless you're suggesting I need to go over to Pistonheads as I must be a man Confused
That's more in keeping with this board.
Are all the feminists agreeing? I've seen a few agree with me on this thread and that's not always the default, I'm usually in the minority on here!

DioneTheDiabolist · 02/06/2019 23:23

That's the second time today I've seen adhering to patriarchal beauty standards being described as freedom. Interesting.

What is the non/unpatriarchal beauty standard for women?
Does it exist?
How is it different?

LimeKiwi · 02/06/2019 23:24

I've been agreeing with people on here I'm usually disagreeing with.

barelove · 02/06/2019 23:24

This is so disingenuous there is little point in responding. Anti- smoking , anti- hunting and anti- drink driving legislation came because of campaigns which led to the banning of smoking in all public places, the banning of hunting and the imposition of strict levels of alcohol.

So, 3 examples of how anti.... campaigns don't always lead to complete bans! Grin

Though if you lived where I do you'd know that the anti hunting campaign didn't result in a ban in practice :(

Erythronium · 02/06/2019 23:28

They were slightly disconnected statements Lime Kiwi. The second was just continued musing on the different expectations of the sexes, given that PistonHeads is seen as the Mumsnet equivalent.

"What is the non/unpatriarchal beauty standard for women?"

There isn't one. Beauty standards are sexist. They only apply to women. They shouldn't exist at all.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 02/06/2019 23:28

What is the non/unpatriarchal beauty standard for women?

I suppose that would be there being no beauty standard at all.

LassOfFyvie · 02/06/2019 23:29

So, 3 examples of how anti.... campaignsdon'talways lead to complete bans!

Are you seriously suggesting there is no social opprobrium against smokers and drink drivers? That comes from the campaigns against them.

OccasionalKite · 02/06/2019 23:41

Huh.
I see that no-one gave a damn about me having a gnat, an actual gnat accidentally glued to my middle finger, left hand.

Well, that's me giving up feminism for ever, then.

Grin
barelove · 02/06/2019 23:44

opprobrium that's too big a word for me to think about at this time of night Grin

redcaryellowcar · 02/06/2019 23:46

I'm in! I file mine short and scrub them when I've been gardening etc, mine are quite strong so don't need too much tlc, I have had them painted on a few occasions but it never lasts longer than a day, always doing something which seems to chip the paint!

barelove · 02/06/2019 23:48

Sounds fancy. Like those beetles that get trapped in amber. You've probably started a trend. They'll all be asking for gnats on their nails now!

LimeKiwi · 02/06/2019 23:52

I'm in! I file mine short

I'm in too, although I constantly feel I'm womanning wrong on this board lol -
you FILE them short? Get outta here fuck that shit lol.

minou123 · 02/06/2019 23:58

clearly I'd like women to love themselves as they naturally are, which is amazing, but that's a matter of persuasion and discussion, not control

You know, when men say "they would love women to love themselves as they naturally are, because it's amazing, and they are not trying to control me just persuade me" - I think "what patronising rubbish is that?". So in the interests of equality, I'm saying the same to to you.

Btw, citizens of the People's Republic of China would be highly offended if you said to them they are currently living in a totalitarian state. They dont. There is an arguement that they may live in an authoritarian regime.
Also, trying not to be picky, but there is no such thing as 'Korean women', there are South Korean women and North Korean women.

OccasionalKite · 03/06/2019 00:00

Invest in shiny insects, that is all I am saying for now. Wink wink!

DioneTheDiabolist · 03/06/2019 00:11

Beauty standards are sexist. They only apply to women.
Can you explain/expand on this stance a bit more Erythronium? I'm not sure what you mean,Confused because beauty standards do apply to men and have always done so.

RiversDisguise · 03/06/2019 00:17

Julius Caesar used to pluck, scrape and exfoliate virtually every inch of his body.

Damn that actual historical patriarchy.

barelove · 03/06/2019 00:21

I'm always the last one to the party Hmm

Can we start an anti "nail" campaign?
RiversDisguise · 03/06/2019 00:21

I never do anything to my nails except clean them and cut them when they snag. They never get long as they are brittle. But. I just noticed that they seem to have grown the longest they have ever got to. I thank the OP. I have an strong anti-authoritarian streak and it appears this extends to my nails. Wink

Ahaah bare, love it.

DioneTheDiabolist · 03/06/2019 00:35

The male beauty (they call it men's grooming) market is practically non-existent.
You are actually having a laugh here? Right? Barbers, gyms, steroids, back, sack and crack, Beard parlours, skin care, tanning, protein powders, aftershaves, penis extenders, plastic surgery etc. go way back for men. Male grooming has always existed. It wasn't just Elizabethan women painting their faces with lead.Hmm

My granda died in the early '80s. He had his first manicure in 1920s New York. Until he died he kept his hands and nails beautiful and taught his sons to do the same.
