Wagamama and gender neutral toilets

TulipsTulipsTulips · 31/05/2019 20:55

40% of wagamama’s toilets will be gender neutral by September. The last thing I want to do when I go out for a meal is share the facilities with men. We are different and deserve privacy! How have women’s interests become such a low priority?

even if a particular woman doesn't mind unisex, you'd wonder why she'd deny single sex loos for the many women who clearly want/need them

I'm not denying them. I don't care. I'm not demanding single occupancy. I haven't signed any petitions or letters either way.

If public opinion demands that they go back to old style single sex toilets then so be it

Yes, if that happens I won't be campaigning against them.

PCohle · 03/06/2019 20:39

Because I think there are pros and cons to both single sex cubicles and unisex sole occupancy toilets. This thread alone demonstrates that diversity of perspectives.

In the absence of clear evidence that unisex sole occupancy toilets negatively affect women's safety or privacy, I think it's reasonable to leave it to individual businesses to determine what options they provide.

paffuto · 03/06/2019 20:40

Because for me, these individual cubicles are actually beneficial says it all. I'm alright Jack.

It says nothing of the sort. Decomposing has explained why she prefers single occupancy. At no point has she given any indication she is campaigning for that or against single sex loos.

Her preference is not harming you other than she is not actively campaigning for what you want.

PCohle · 03/06/2019 20:50

The poster in question has shared upthread that she suffers from Crohn's disease.

I think implying that individuals suffering from invisibility illnesses and disabilities are somehow being selfish by not sharing your preferences is deeply inconsiderate.

I hadn't heard someone drowned - how awful

I think it was this weekend.

And I could say the same to people who want single sex multi cubicle toilets. They adversely affect me and they severely limit my ability to get on with my life. Now, I understand that other people have different priorities to me which is why I explained why they are better for me and why I said I am not campaigning to do away with single sex toilets but if they are more widely introduced they will help me to live a slightly more normal life.

Or do people like me, with hidden disabilities that affect our bowels or bladder, not matter?

The proposed toilets are going to be self contained cubicles which is no different to many set ups in little cafes etc. I am presuming those that are talking about boycotting Wagamama also boycott the little independent local cafe, because after all they often just have one little toilet.

I know earlier in the thread that the poster was royally shouted down, but the vast majority of accessible toilets are mixed sex, what if tomorrow, you ended up in a wheelchair, would you never again go anywhere to avoid having to use a unisex toilet?

I disagree how they have gone about this, but the actual end result is no different to what already exists in many places.

paffuto · 03/06/2019 21:32

Decomposing I must be a martyr then. The loos you need are what I need. I have radiation damaged bladder, constant water infections, incontinence, rectocele and I take absolutely ages in the loo. Added to that, prolapsed intervertebral disc and arthritis. And yet I feel the priority is safety for women, girls and young children. I don't want the deterrents and safety nets to be removed (probably for ever). I struggle in the loo anyway but I would still rather have the reduced risks that we have now and have had for quite a long time, than get the loo I need. Martyr me, eh?

ZebrasAreBras · 03/06/2019 21:34

I think there's a big difference between a tiny cafe with one private lockable loo - that has always been that way - and actually taking away private, female only facilities that have always been there.

paffuto · 03/06/2019 21:42

Decomposing forgot to mention I also have colitis. In fact, I'm a walking disaster! Wink Apologies if I offended you. But I also wanted to add this, sometimes I use the disabled loo but feel so embarrassed when I take half an hour and emerge to find a man waiting. I feel more comfortable in the ladies.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 03/06/2019 21:44

Sorry, how really is that the same? When you go to the toilet does everyone hear you having explosive diarrhoea? Are you so embarrassed by the sounds and smell of you going to the toilet that you avoid going out? Or don't eat for the day before or on the day when you are out, including during the working week, in the hope that you can avoid an attack?

20 years my life has been like this, so please don't make me out as being selfish because some changes that are occurring now might actually make my life a bit easier.

paffuto · 03/06/2019 21:47

That's it exactly Zebras, the taking away private, female only facilities that have always been there. Makes me so angry and quite upset.

DecomposingComposers · 03/06/2019 21:47

The wagamamas here have always been like this though, so nothing is being taken away. This is how they were built.

PCohle · 03/06/2019 21:49

I think there's a big difference between a tiny cafe with one private lockable loo - that has always been that way - and actually taking away private, female only facilities that have always been there.

But what difference does the owner's motivation make to the actual safety and privacy of women? Presumably the risk of spy cams is just as high if only one loo has ever been provided.

ZebrasAreBras · 03/06/2019 21:50

Wagamamas have had female only loos - otherwise they wouldn't be making the announcement they're going "gender neutral".

Certainly the one near me has women-only - I realise they may differ depending on the branch.

If you've got colitis then you know exactly what Crohn's is like so why say what you said?

Find it a bit odd that having colitis you chose not to mention it and mentioned bladder problems and arthritis instead.

And yes, you did offend me.

paffuto · 03/06/2019 21:53

Yes to your first paragraph Decomposing all the same for me. But you enjoy your changes, I will hate it and feel gutted for women and girls rights. And I have apologised.
