I knew she was making a documentary but I didn't know it was for the BBC. Bit wary now of what she'll be allowed to say.

The tennis star and gay rights campaigner is to front Brook Lapping’s 60-minute doc Trans Athletes: A Fair Playing Field?, which will air next month.

In February, Navratilova was roundly criticised by trans and equality activists for stating that allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sporting tournaments was “insane and cheating”. She subsequently said she would do more research on the matter.

For the doc, Navratilova will speak with the athletes, scientists and sporting officials at the forefront of the debate, including former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies, who said in March that transgender athletes could “ruin women’s sport”.

She will also meet trans medical physicist and former runner Joanna Harper, who will explain how her run times dropped by more than 10% following her transition.

Wow what a pathetic spineless whitewash that was. Really disappointed in Martina...

HollowTalk · 26/06/2019 21:59

On the Mark Lawson drama on R4 someone said that no transman in their right mind would dream of competing against men - absolutely true.

Doobigetta · 26/06/2019 21:59

Charlie feels that transitioning has improved Charlie’s performance... and the Le Mans circuit drivers consist of Charlie and lots of men. No females. How exactly does this help with women’s progress in the sport?

I had to rewrite that about four times to get it to make sense without breaking the rules.

OvaHere · 26/06/2019 22:00

That's disappointing littlbrowndog

HollowTalk · 26/06/2019 22:00

Just thinking about Charlie and the motor-racing - that would only be interesting if Charlie was originally female and transitioned to male.

AcarinaTeaBag · 26/06/2019 22:00

They didn't ask any female athletes that compete in sport at the moment what they thought. It was so bloody one sided.Angry

Erythronium · 26/06/2019 22:00

Another woman made to publicly disavow her heresy and genuflect to males.

walkingtheplank · 26/06/2019 22:01

Very disappointing.

Becles · 26/06/2019 22:01

On the whole a lot stronger than I was expecting, given the limitations of the BBC.

longtimelurkerhelen · 26/06/2019 22:01

I think the only fair way for trans women to compete in sport is against other trans women. There should be male, female, trans and para.

Also if I was a trans woman, I wouldn't want to compete against women as I would know I would have such an advantage, it's cheating, pure and simple. I wouldn't feel I would have won fair and square.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/06/2019 22:01

It's the BBC. Frankly I'm amazed they let it go out at all. I think it may have opened a few eyes. I didn't hope for more than that.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 26/06/2019 22:01

I can't watch as I don't pay for a TV license, but it sounds typical of the BBC from what I've read here.

dollyandshirl · 26/06/2019 22:01

I was outraged at that man (who didn't look like he could win an egg & spoon race) lecturing MARTINA NAVRATILOVA on sporting competition. Women's sport will be different in 10 years - yeah it will with no born women in it. I wonder why she didn't wipe the floor with the smug twat.

No Martina you don't need to evolve. She looked so sad, too.

Fibbke · 26/06/2019 22:01

It's like that bit in the stepford wives when the rebellious woman gets lobotomised.

MockerstheFeManist · 26/06/2019 22:01

Predictably, ever so BBC 'balanced.'

Best wishes for the academics at Loughborough collecting a proper sample spread of data.

could have done without 'assigned at birth.'

8/10

tinabloodysparkle · 26/06/2019 22:02

V disappointed in the lame conclusion at the end, I expected Martina to stick it to 'em - nope, let's all play nicely and 'evolve'.

littlbrowndog · 26/06/2019 22:02

It was crap mostly.

Some dudes whining about sport and inclusivity

To be balanced we need more women talking about women in sport

So
My thoughts were it was crap.

And my take from this was as a bystander with no skin in this why are all these men so desperate to get in women’s sport

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 26/06/2019 22:02

Shit ending

JoyceJeffries · 26/06/2019 22:03

Glad I didn’t watch it. The BBC has lost the plot.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 26/06/2019 22:03

I'm surprised some people were expecting anything else from the BBC.

jessicawessica · 26/06/2019 22:03

Are there actually any men (born women) who have transitioned competing in male sport?

endofthelinefinally · 26/06/2019 22:04

Nothing at all was mentioned about self identifying transwomen who have no intention of taking hormones or having surgery. Missing the point of self ID completely.

Scarscar · 26/06/2019 22:04

I agree the ending was a complete cop out.

OvaHere · 26/06/2019 22:05

On the plus side it will probably shock the demographic that don't do social media but do tend to watch the BBC on an evening. I'm picturing a lot of WTF faces.

OhHolyJesus · 26/06/2019 22:06

I was so hoping that this wasn't going to go that way. I don't know why I expected better.

Martina thinks transwoman are women
Caster Semenya is not trans
Engines and cars are not people
Psychologists are not endocrinologists
Testosterone is a red herring

So sick of this shit.
