I knew she was making a documentary but I didn't know it was for the BBC. Bit wary now of what she'll be allowed to say.

The tennis star and gay rights campaigner is to front Brook Lapping’s 60-minute doc Trans Athletes: A Fair Playing Field?, which will air next month.

In February, Navratilova was roundly criticised by trans and equality activists for stating that allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sporting tournaments was “insane and cheating”. She subsequently said she would do more research on the matter.

For the doc, Navratilova will speak with the athletes, scientists and sporting officials at the forefront of the debate, including former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies, who said in March that transgender athletes could “ruin women’s sport”.

She will also meet trans medical physicist and former runner Joanna Harper, who will explain how her run times dropped by more than 10% following her transition.

Neuro you still bother with medical diagnoses? Aren’t you offended and triggered by all that gatekeeping? Grin

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/06/2019 10:08

Its very humiliating to have to prove anaphylactic shock through the mere sound of tinkerbell but the potent anti-disnamines I can then gain access to are worth it.

Martina needs to kick up a stink about this. Her words are being misrepresented in a mainstream newspaper for political aims.

The genetic basis of evolution and the requirements of multiple generations to do this at population level do make evolution a laughably ironic metaphor grin when used by people who seem to be deeply impressed by the significance of humans making cosmetic surface alterations or embellishments to an otherwise unchanged physical entity. It’s complete crap.

It’s a form of Lamarckism.

Evolution is one of the most powerful ideas humans have come up with. It’s just two easy to understand processes: random mutation and natural selection. Every generation produces a slight variation. Those who’s variations prove to be advantageous will statistically have more offspring. It’s so beautifully simple.

There’s nothing random or natural about an ideology. Ideologies are directed. They are more akin to ‘intelligent design’ than natural selection. Ideologies can spring into being in a single generation. They can also disappear overnight too. Half of the works used to be communist.

And an ideology that makes it less likely to produce children is doomed in the long run because evolution isn’t kind.

The Guardian also misrepresented the scientist who’s work they said implied there were nine sexes. Sorry, can’t remember her name - can anyone help me out? - but she clarified on Twitter that there are two sexes, with variations within them.

FannyCann · 30/06/2019 09:36

Good grief. Ellis Cashmore has just followed me on Twitter. He's trolling isn't he.

endofthelinefinally · 30/06/2019 10:21

At least Martina had a few minutes on Andrew Marr this morning to redress some of the twitter stuff. Not long enough, unfortunately.

misscockerspaniel · 30/06/2019 10:29

Martina was eloquent on the Andrew Marr show. Got the message across v well and wasn't contradicted by the presenter or other guests.

Rubidium · 30/06/2019 10:35

Andrew Marr, adopting are-you-prepared-to-repent-for-your-sins tone: So, Martina, when you made your programme, you spoke to trans people and transgender atheletes, did they get you to change your mind?

Martina: No, no. Not at all.

(or words to that effect).

LizzieSiddal · 30/06/2019 10:35

Yes, she was brilliant on Andrew Marr.

Her main message- these young children need lots of time.

Michelleoftheresistance · 30/06/2019 10:36

And thus it's demonstrated again to the general public, the political lobby that is the TRA movement is neither honourable or honest, and whatever is said by a representative of it should always be carefully checked against the facts.

This is usually because honesty and fairness is devastating to their aims.

endofthelinefinally · 30/06/2019 10:37

I wish she had managed to mention puberty blockers and surgery.

Rubidium · 01/07/2019 23:31

If anyone's interested in seeing Martina's appearance on yesterday's Marr Show it's here:

Thank you for contacting us about 'The Trans Women Athlete Dispute with Martina Navratilova' broadcast on BBC One on 26 June.

I understand you feel the programme should have featured interviews with female athletes who are currently competing alongside trans women.

This programme stemmed from Martina Navratilova's tweet earlier this year, in which she called for an open debate about transgender women athletes competing in women’s sports. Her tweet sparked a heated and passionate argument, creating global news headlines.

During the programme we heard from a range of viewpoints, including former female athletes. Although the athletes we heard from aren’t currently competing, we ensured that a range of views on the issues were heard across the programme all the same. The athletes didn’t have to be currently competing for this to be achieved.

We’ll continue to look at the topic across our coverage, including those directly affected by the legislation, and have noted your comments.

We're guided by audience reaction, so please rest assured your concerns have been raised with the programme team and senior management on our audience feedback report. These reports are among the most widely read sources of feedback within the BBC and help inform our ongoing work.

Once again, many thanks for taking the time to get in touch.

Kind regards

Janine McMeekin

including former female athletes.

Don’t they mean female former athlete i.e. Sharron Davies

There’s wasn't anyone else Hanse the sodding complaint.

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 06/07/2019 11:34

Exactly they should have dropped one of the puff pieces about the sad TW athletes and interviewed a current athlete who has been directly affected by a TW competing against them there are plenty to choose from

JessicaWakefieldSV · 06/07/2019 12:05

I loved Martina on the marr show! Fantastic. Clear and unequivocal, we cannot let sympathy for trans people override rights and protections for women.
