Martina Navratilova to front BBC1 transgender athletes doc

I knew she was making a documentary but I didn't know it was for the BBC. Bit wary now of what she'll be allowed to say.

The tennis star and gay rights campaigner is to front Brook Lapping’s 60-minute doc Trans Athletes: A Fair Playing Field?, which will air next month.

In February, Navratilova was roundly criticised by trans and equality activists for stating that allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sporting tournaments was “insane and cheating”. She subsequently said she would do more research on the matter.

For the doc, Navratilova will speak with the athletes, scientists and sporting officials at the forefront of the debate, including former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies, who said in March that transgender athletes could “ruin women’s sport”.

She will also meet trans medical physicist and former runner Joanna Harper, who will explain how her run times dropped by more than 10% following her transition.

What about women's rights?

So far a very good documentary overall.

Thanks to everyone watching this. I couldn't quite bring myself to. Sounds like it wasn't too bad in the end despite the lack of female athletes (I guess most current athletes would be too afraid to appear in something like this - a tragic fact in itself).

New to feminist board but have been an out lesbian for a year, sitting with my very catholic mum . Both of us talking about the programme and thoughts on it (in total support of what Martina is saying), very good programme indeed .

For prompting the discussion , I mean . My mum is aghast at the idea that a man could declare himself a woman, put on a skirt, and then a lesbian, despite still having a penis .

Oh come on. 'Out of 80 drivers Charlie is the only woman.' No. There are still 80 biological males and Charlie didn't transition until established in the sport.

Huge efforts being gone to never to mention the word women or women's rights or women's needs.

It sounds like Martina is doing a good job though despite wading through the bullshit. I might watch later on catch up.

When do women ever get this level of sympathy for the struggle we face to be treated as full human beings and to survive in this world? Never is when.

It's as bad as I thought it would be. Martina's done her best but she didn't speak to the right people.

Women aren’t sympathetic and lesbians are even less so. That’s the way it is.

Pity not to hear from Dr Nic and Fair Play for Women. The Loughborough scientists did a good job, though.

What a cop out.

I guess I wished it had focused more on womens rights and the loss of/ losing those rights.

She was very brave to do it, but shame to have whole hour and end up with well we need research come back in 5y.

That ending was a cop out.
Martina looked like she had tears in her eyes having to spout that shit.
I'm guessing that ending was scripted before the rest was even made.
