I knew she was making a documentary but I didn't know it was for the BBC. Bit wary now of what she'll be allowed to say.

The tennis star and gay rights campaigner is to front Brook Lapping’s 60-minute doc Trans Athletes: A Fair Playing Field?, which will air next month.

In February, Navratilova was roundly criticised by trans and equality activists for stating that allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sporting tournaments was “insane and cheating”. She subsequently said she would do more research on the matter.

For the doc, Navratilova will speak with the athletes, scientists and sporting officials at the forefront of the debate, including former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies, who said in March that transgender athletes could “ruin women’s sport”.

She will also meet trans medical physicist and former runner Joanna Harper, who will explain how her run times dropped by more than 10% following her transition.

OvaHere I'm hoping that'll be the case too.

Almostflownthenest · 26/06/2019 22:06

I wasn’t happy with the ending either. What do female Athletes feel about the inclusion of trans women in female sport?

Unformidable · 26/06/2019 22:07

What a disappointing ending

littlbrowndog · 26/06/2019 22:08

And as for the person in motor racing being the first woman to take part.
Well there is something nicked from a woman

DeRigueurMortis · 26/06/2019 22:08

Tbh I'm going against the grain here.

It wasn't as "robust" as I would have liked but the fact it was made at all and the inclusion of some very specific differences in male/female physiology was a plus.

Go in too hard and you'll never (imho) capture the attention of the woke who could be "woken".

FloralBunting · 26/06/2019 22:09

You do have to wonder what kind of point is being made when Charlie the racing driver says their times improved when they transitioned, and they are then shown to be still the only 'woman' racing.

I think the only thing this documentary proved was that no one gives a shiny shit about women, including quite a lot of women.

Which is all rather depressing, really.

littlbrowndog · 26/06/2019 22:12

Though I guess if I was watching this as not knowing anything about this issue I would be like why are all these guys pretending no one knows the truth

Fibbke · 26/06/2019 22:12

It's annoyed a lot of mras on twotter so on balance maybe it wasn't too bad.

Eaudear · 26/06/2019 22:12

On the plus side it will probably shock the demographic that don't do social media but do tend to watch the BBC on an evening. I'm picturing a lot of WTF faces.

Yes, it was a very prime time slot wasn't it? I only watched a bit of it, but I can't imagine the general public buying it.

Charley50 · 26/06/2019 22:12

It should have ended on Christina, who no longer plays football with women, saying wonderfully clearly that trans women are men, and women can't compete against them, and why there's no place for men in women's sports. That would have been so much stronger.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/06/2019 22:13

Martina did make a point of saying that several of the trans women she spoke to had not had any physical treatment. It was also clear from the montage of trans women competitors that most had a huge physical advantage still - Laurel Hubbard in particular, the NZ weightlifter.

Very little of what was said there was new to me or to any of the FWR regulars, I'd think, but to the great mass of the viewing public most of this will be a revelation and I'd be surprised if the overwhelming reaction to it wasn't 'But it isn't fair!' - meaning not fair to the women and girls who will be deprived of the chance to win. Sharon Davies put that across well.

Alwaysgrey · 26/06/2019 22:14

Interesting. I think MN looked very sad and at some points annoyed through the documentary. Funny how no one really gives a crap about disability discrimination but as soon as men start to want to become women suddenly it’s about inclusion and equality.

I don’t believe trans females especially should be allowed to compete in female sports. This isn’t a hard problem. Male, female, trans F, trans M.

I’ve had a gutful of how our hard earned rights are being tossed aside from the same minority of men who feel like a woman. I hate self I.d and whilst I do emphasise with the struggle many face women have faced crap for years as have gay people. But of course I’d be classed as transphobic. I have no issue at all with trans people but I have a huge issue with women’s rights being eroded.

Charley50 · 26/06/2019 22:14

Yep the ending was awful.

littlbrowndog · 26/06/2019 22:14

Yeah true gasp. Am just disappointed at ending

littlbrowndog · 26/06/2019 22:16

But women face struggles. This is not exclusive to trans people.

Jeez. The most struggles ever

Honestly, I was reading the comments on an AfterEllen post on Facebook earlier, about the US college running situation, and it was a long stream of utter fucking prats telling this girl she was transphobia because she was unhappy about being flat out beaten by males. Lots of crap about inclusion and adjusting all the categories so 'similar abilities' compete, not based on 'body parts'.

I am so, so upset at how very short the time has been that women have been able to enjoy a tenth of what a truly equal society would afford us - and now a bunch of whiny, entitled fucking men are stomping all over that relatively modest progress with the blessing of the stupid, smiling indulgently on the sidelines, which is apparently where women of the cunty kind are supposed to be.

Eaudear · 26/06/2019 22:21

I do think sport will be the thing that peak transes the nation.

You just can't argue with it can you?

littlbrowndog · 26/06/2019 22:22

It was kinda all about men is my take away from this and women having to justify their existence in sport as women

Fuck that

Erythronium · 26/06/2019 22:23

Women are just supposed to step back, be stepped over and then be understanding of males and their struggles to take everything from us. Not going to happen.

Kilbranan · 26/06/2019 22:25

Ending very disappointing. Very unbalanced with only one sportswoman (Sharron Davies) in the whole thing - she was great though.
Very happy to see footage of people like laurel Hubbard included - that will certainly peak a few people, as well as the realisation that most transgender women retain their male genitalia
The bit at the end with Charlie - ?suggesting that tw can stay in their existing sport category and still improve because they are being themselves?? Ie expand the definition of male to include transgender women- most don’t have surgery or take hormones anyway so their performance would not be affected.

nonsenceagain · 26/06/2019 22:26

Disappointing ending and too many men, but I was watching it with friends who haven’t thought much about the issue at all. They were pretty shocked and I suspect they won’t be the only ones.

It would be so nice if the conclusion had been 'we need much more research so let's keep the sex classes the way they are until we know more'.

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 26/06/2019 22:30

I agree that would be my conclusion. The science is overwhelmingly saying at the moment that it's completely unfair to women so let's stop them competing until it can be proven that this is not the case
