Martina Navratilova to front BBC1 transgender athletes doc

I knew she was making a documentary but I didn't know it was for the BBC. Bit wary now of what she'll be allowed to say.

The tennis star and gay rights campaigner is to front Brook Lapping’s 60-minute doc Trans Athletes: A Fair Playing Field?, which will air next month.

In February, Navratilova was roundly criticised by trans and equality activists for stating that allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sporting tournaments was “insane and cheating”. She subsequently said she would do more research on the matter.

For the doc, Navratilova will speak with the athletes, scientists and sporting officials at the forefront of the debate, including former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies, who said in March that transgender athletes could “ruin women’s sport”.

She will also meet trans medical physicist and former runner Joanna Harper, who will explain how her run times dropped by more than 10% following her transition.

Presumably the same logic that would allow me to compete legitimately as a 7 year old in my school sports day, if I spent a required amount of time playing with Lego, eating haribo and limiting my green vegetable intake (ie ‘living as a 7 year old’).

This comment from Owl is revolting.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/06/2019 10:33

What is the owls game? What have they to gain from an army of trans teens/tweens/kids?

EverardDigby · 27/06/2019 10:40

Comments under the Tweets are pretty critical though, particularly around medicated children damaging their health and being unfit to participate in high level sport.

andyoldlabour · 27/06/2019 10:42

Ellis Cashmore getting well and truly put down on Twitter.

I have to agree with Prawn on the motorsports thing. It is massively physical, and requires a huge amount of physical strength to drive mostly due to the g-force generated in corners. F1 cars in particular are not like driving a normal car but faster. Drivers do a lot of specific neck training but you often don't notice until they stop driving and then you can really see the difference.

There are differences between the racing series, and sportscars tends to be less physical than F1/F2, and there have been good female drivers in various series, like Susie Wolff, Danica Patrick, Simona Di Silvestra and the BBC have featured younger women drivers coming up through karting and the lower formula series back when they used to have the F1 rights. I'm not aware of Sky doing any similar features recently, although I quit watching F1 a couple of years ago because it got predictable and I couldn't afford the luxury of Sky Sports anymore.

The rest of the programme, though, could have used a whole lot more input from actual females involved in sport, although I absolutely understand why many would likely have been reluctant.

hat have they to gain from an army of trans teens/tweens/kids?

Power

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/06/2019 10:56

Leave them kids alone!

nauticant · 27/06/2019 10:56

What is the owls game? What have they to gain from an army of trans teens/tweens/kids?

When I see those kind of comments by trans activists I think (i) a captive group who have no choice but to uphold the ideology, (ii) Munchausen syndrome by proxy, and (iii) people who are interested in prepubescent bodies.

That said, I don't know whether any of (i), (ii), or (iii) might apply to Owl.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 27/06/2019 10:56

Leave them kids alone!

"All you have to do is follow the worms."

HumberElla · 27/06/2019 11:02

What they have to gain is influence and a lot more attention than they would otherwise obtain if you were, let’s say for example, a mediocre middle class heterosexual alsoran who craves specialness but doesn’t rate highly on the Special-o-meter.

OldCrone · 27/06/2019 11:04

There's a new women-only motor racing series to try to get more women into the top level.

I agree those tweets by Owl are disgusting.

“We are ruining more and more children’s bodies, hurray!”

And show a significant lack of understanding of medicine and sport. An chronologically adult male whose body has been kept in the prepubertal state will:

a) be at the level of a prepubertal child and will have no chance of beating any adult

b) will not be the same as an adult female, no matter how many silicone tits are added to it

c) will be suffering from a variety of complications relating to hormone treatment and surgery (can Jazz Jennings sit down properly yet?)

d) will have had no chance of progressing to elite level sport by the end of their teenage years because their body will not be able to keep up with peers of either sex if they’re on these treatments. I can’t imagine a very good swimmer or tennis player keeping going ages 12-18 while being soundly beaten by peers whose bodies are growing and developing as they’re supposed to.

So not only is Owl grotesque for being so positive about children being medicalised in this way, the pathway Owl wants will mean no trans people will be physically capable of sport at any level other than purely recreational.

The complete willingness of adults to send children to have their bodies brutalised for the enhancement of adult male entitlement is a scandal that enrages me like little other.

Michelleoftheresistance · 27/06/2019 12:05

Owl's quite right. We will soon have teenagers and young adults who never went through puberty and don't have the same testosterone advantage as forty year old men who transition on a full testosterone/male puberty advantage. But the majority of these kids are genuinely body dysphoric or rapid onset/comorbid issues not being met. Not experienced, fit adult males with AGP.

Out bigger concern with this large group is more likely to be things like supporting them to deal with the developmental difficulties of not achieving full adult brain development and possibly some legal issues there too around capacity judging by JJ; helping them deal with the fall out of surgery complications and the results very different to the ones they expected; the loss of sex drive, ability to have sexual relationships and loss of fertility; the distress of those detransitioning who have made massive changes to their bodies they can no longer tolerate; and the chronic illnesses and disabilities resulting from the medications given to them at an early age.

We're probably going to be less concerned about their running speeds than about whether they are well enough to earn a living or whether they're able to cope with adult life at all. And the massive majority of them are going to be girls.

Michelleoftheresistance · 27/06/2019 12:06

Cross post with Not who said it better.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 27/06/2019 12:09

whether they're able to cope with adult life at all. And the massive majority of them are going to be girls.

You know there's a troll / adult baby who sometimes posts here about then "end goal" being women being kept as babies forever and controlled by men....
So for some people this is clearly an end goal that's in mind.

littlbrowndog · 27/06/2019 12:11

But if you don’t have puberty what do you become ?

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 27/06/2019 12:12

But if you don’t have puberty what do you become ?
A pedophiles dream.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 27/06/2019 12:13

An adult babies fantasy.

MacaroonMama · 27/06/2019 12:13

Have complained to the BBC on the grounds of bias. I thought Navratilova was great but where were the interviews with woman affected by transwomen in sport? Also cross that the lawyer didn't discuss the EA2010 exemptions (ie the law), but instead told women to be kinder to transwomen with hurt feelings.

IT HAS GONE PAST KINDNESS!

Anyway. The more complaints the better, I reckon. Didn't take long.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/06/2019 12:15

Interestingly 3 girls in the US are taking the state to court because they were beaten by a male.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/06/2019 12:15

Beaten on the track that it.

Michelleoftheresistance · 27/06/2019 12:16

An eternal prepubescent, like a well known tv personality. Hormones have added features, but brain and sexual development eternally pre teen. And no sex drive.

The vulnerabilities of that are stark and staring. And as women around MN are very well aware, there are men who may find such a victim a very attractive prospect for a power imbalanced relationship. But then of course we 'mustn't kink shame'. Anyone who can't join up the dots at this point needs Spec Savers.

Apologies for guideline related word salad.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 27/06/2019 12:18

Also if you create an army that's dependent on you for constant care you will have have some of the most loyal followers...

Michelleoftheresistance · 27/06/2019 12:19

It is helpful that this heavily biased, heavily sympathetic and one sided documentary has caused massed rage and hysteria about it's 'transphobia'. I hope the TRA lobby stomp their rage all over the national press and bring it to as wide an audience as possible, because that makes the sheer batshittery of all this nicely evident.

No balanced conversation or rationality possible, no matter how sensitively done. No consideration of anyone else's needs possible. It's like an overtired toddler. Do exactly as commanded or RAGE.
