Gentleman Jack

Anyone else noticed how the GBTIQKJGJKGGGFGFVVMNV movement have totally hijacked Gentleman Jack where the main protagonist is clearly, unapologetically, a lesbian?

"oh how inclusive!"
"wonderful to see LGBTQI representation!"
etc.

No, she's just one of those pesky lesbian woman (adult human female variety). But that can't be permitted apparently.

Also intriguing how they are not demanding that a lesbian actor play the role, when in every single show with a trans character they bleat on about how they should use trans actors. It's almost as if there is a complete double standard going on.

The haven’t watched this yet but love Suranne Jones.

LizzieSiddal · 20/05/2019 13:22

They can hijack all they like, but the vast majority of the General Public, see Gentleman Jack as a lesbian. If the TRAs want to deluded themselves, let them get on with it.

Apparently 'Jack' was term for a Lesbian in Victorian times, hence her name.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 20/05/2019 14:16

They tried to hijack her memorial in York.
They failed.

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/05/2019 14:33

They're just trying to ride the wave of love for lesbians, but have absolutely nothing in common with them.

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/05/2019 14:33

Which pisses them off.

Brighterf · 20/05/2019 14:52

Pleased to see Calderdale Council is having none of it!

I gather Suranne Jones has had a bit of grief for not being lesbian yet portraying a lesbian.

Not, though, from actual lesbians - largely because we do like to see sexy women playing lesbians on telly and we don't much care if they're straight in real life.

I though it was feckin' fab and can't wait for next week's episode.

Deliriumoftheendless · 20/05/2019 17:47

When I was at Uni a friend introduced me to Ann Lister (not in person, I’m not that old) through a presentation she did about her. I’m very glad to have learned about her.

I forgot to watch this though but will catch up.

RuffleCrow · 20/05/2019 17:52

Looking forward to watching this. Suranne Jones is great and Anne Lister was an unapologetic lesbian. Good ole Adult Human Females front and centre. Smile

DeployTheTut · 20/05/2019 17:56

I am so excited to watch this... I also plan to do a trip to visit Shibden Hall and do touristy stuff about Gentleman Jack. I think it would be a great day out!

GraceMarks · 20/05/2019 18:24

They filmed some bits of this in my neck of the woods, and I absolutely did not hang around near the trailers hoping to get a glimpse of Suranne Jones. I really enjoyed the first episode - hope they can keep the standard up for another 5 instalments.

VickyEadie · 21/05/2019 10:46

GraceMarks

It's an eight part series! You've got another 7 to look forward to.

PackingSoap · 22/05/2019 10:33

Calderdale Council wouldn't dare relabel Anne Lister. There would be an outcry in Hebden Bridge and Todmorden, and the Labour councillors would lose a lot of votes over it.

NotBadConsidering · 22/05/2019 10:39

I was really pleasantly surprised to read this article on the BBC last week and not see the word trans at all and be informed at the same time:

theOtherPamAyres · 22/05/2019 13:07

A big thumbs up to the talented Yorkshire folk duo, and fabulous lesbian couple, who provide the closing song "Gentleman Jack".

Brenda O'Hooley and Heidi Tiddow wrote the song in 2012, I think

They are great live too - extraordinary musicians, funny, spirited and heartwarming.

Sarcelle · 22/05/2019 13:22

I don't get the whole lesbians must play lesbians, and gay actors must play gay characters. Plenty of gay guys play straight, and rightly so, its called acting.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 22/05/2019 13:37

Related...

The Guardian must have had a knock to the head, for they have published an ENTIRE ARTICLE on lesbians, featuring only the shitty XX type. Not a single ladydick in sight. Don't they know lesbians can be male too?

And right next to that was this extremely off-message article on Will Young, who I seem to recall has been all over gender fluidity and wokeness.

So I was somewhat surprised to read this comment:

"I found a white Victorian crumpled skirt with lots of layers, which I love, and now I wear it all the time. I think men can look amazing in skirts – everyone says men look great in kilts but they are the same thing! Why is a man in a skirt “in drag” while a man in a kilt is considered very masculine? It’s only down to the fact that people have a problem with the label."

I mean, "people" = mainly men, but still...

Sarcelle

Correct. Alan Cumming has played a range of straight roles. I don't recall straight people moaning about that actor doing what actors do, ie pretending to be someone/thing they're not.

CannyLad · 22/05/2019 16:59

Would actors even get paid if they just played themselves (excluding Michael Caine of course)? Good show, her off GOT scrubs up well too as the dispairing sister, I think she was gay in that but perhaps not now. So confusing! Not really, acting innit.Smile

notatwork · 22/05/2019 17:34

I was meaning to watch this..land of my birth (School trip to Shibden Hall every year when I was a littleun) and all, but hadn't got around to it so thanks for the reminder! Especially if O'Hooley and Tidow did the music. I love them!
How can anyone even pretend to think that Anne Lister wasn't a lesbian? She'd never have got away with her lifestyle if she hadn't been a woman! Being a chaperone on honeymoon etc...

Sarcelle · 22/05/2019 19:11

The sexy priest in Fleabag is gay. He's not a holy man in RL either. Double shocking!

nettie434 · 22/05/2019 20:45

Yes, let's not forget they tried to de-lesbian her commemorative plaque

Think that was York Civic Trust rather than Calderdale Council Langcleg. The plaque is in a church in York which is not in Calderdale because York is a unitary authority.

So many councils have been shocking to women that it is entirely reasonable to asume it was the council's fault but these plaques are not organised by the council: yorkcivictrust.co.uk/heritage/civic-trust-plaques/
