Accused of bullying and facing a huge political storm

Is this all from that GC tweet she agreed with?

If so it’s a terrible orchestrated pile on

Genderfreelass · 13/05/2019 20:04

What tweet was it?

Have you got any more details?

Joanna and Joan McAlpine have been amazing in standing up for women. Joanna is a lawyer so be surprised if she posted/did anything that could be deemed illegal. 😕

ThePurportedDoctoress · 13/05/2019 20:07

www.scotsman.com/news/politics/snp-mp-joanna-cherry-says-bully-claim-may-be-part-of-smearing-by-own-party-1-4925735

"Internal warfare has erupted within the SNP as a leading MP, facing allegations of bullying, accused others in her party of “lies” and “politically-motivated smears”.

Joanna Cherry, QC, the SNP MP for Edinburgh South West, said that allegations she had bullied a staff member were part of a “smear campaign” against her.

Her claims were backed by senior party sources who said the MP was being attacked for speaking out about misogyny on social media as well as her stance on proposed self-identification legislation for transgender people – with one source saying the campaign against her was “like the Crucible”."

LassOfFyvie · 13/05/2019 20:10

No. It is complaints from 4 parliamentary staffers about her ,allegedly, bullying behaviour towards them.

Joanna is a lawyer so be surprised if she posted/did anything that could be deemed illegal

Solicitors and advocates are capable of getting things wrong too. This has nothing to do with the tweets however.

littlbrowndog · 13/05/2019 20:13

It’s weird how these allegations have come out sinc3 ms cherry went all GC

Birdsfoottrefoil · 13/05/2019 20:14

Lawyers can be wrong (just look at self-ID lawyer SH), but the timing of these accusations is not coincidental.

LassOfFyvie · 13/05/2019 20:15

From The Sun
House of Commons authorities are probing the matter after complaints were lodged last August

There are reported to be four complainers

Ex-staffer Iona Paton, one of those who’s made claims, said: “I’m frustrated with the process, the fact it has taken so long and I’m not expecting anything at all to come out of it

This has come to the forefront because Cherry is complaining of how she has been treated but these allegations pre-date her complaints by around 10 months.

LassOfFyvie · 13/05/2019 20:16

but the timing of these accusations is not coincidental

The publicity now being given to them might be coincidental, the allegations were made months ago.

Stiffasaboard · 13/05/2019 20:17

Yes but interesting coincidence it has all come up just as Haddock and LM have gone after her for her endorsing a tweet

OP posts:
Stiffasaboard · 13/05/2019 20:18

Total pile on and now all this blows up about her being ‘a bully’
Not a coincidence

Hmmm. Senior party sources saying she is being attacked for her views. Versus an anonymous internet poster saying otherwise.

Who to believe?

JackyHolyoake · 13/05/2019 20:22

"Ms Cherry has come under fire from the youth wing of the SNP and from the party’s national women’s and equalities convener, who have said she “misgendered” transwoman Lily Madigan, a Labour Party women’s officer in a Twitter conversation. "

Madigan is who the SNP is defending! [Good grief!]

Cherry tried to discredit a nurse who spoke up criticiskng conditions in the NHS Scotland by saying the nurse only spoke up because the nurse was married to a Tory councillor (she wasn't but even if she had been so what?)

She also criticised Emily Thornberry for missing an important Commons vote when Thornberry was at a hospital with a sick child. She never apologised for that.

Mnbb · 13/05/2019 20:24

She’s an incredibly nice, strong, ethical woman. She is being investigated for anti trans comments.

This will be quite a test for the parliamentary authorities who have to investigate and report on her. It’s one of their first investigations against an MP since Parliament introduced an anti bullying charter. They need to appear strong and so I am pretty concerned for her.

Mnbb · 13/05/2019 20:26

To clarify she’s not being investigated for the tweets, they wouldn’t be covered by parliament’s code.

LassOfFyvie · 13/05/2019 20:27

The allegations of bullying clearly pre-date the current tweets. I assume the ex- staffer , who is named in the press , was annoyed at Cherry playing the victim when these allegations were still being investigated.

I'm not sure why you think "senior party sources" adds any credibility.

LassOfFyvie · 13/05/2019 20:29

She is being investigated for anti trans comments

That is not what she is being investigated for. The investigation is about complaints of bullying made months ago.

ThePurportedDoctoress · 13/05/2019 20:32

Lass is right, the allegations were made months ago. My understanding is that it's to do with the way she dealt with complaints about her office manager.

GCatEdinburgh · 13/05/2019 20:34

It's hit the press just now because everyone's jockeying for position around who'll get selected to run against Ruth Davidson in Edinburgh Central. Dirty game, politics.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 13/05/2019 20:35

There was a tweet thread from someone reasonably prominent in Edinburgh SNP saying that one of the charges against her was untrue (they knew the accuser).

It has now been removed for some reason.

LassOfFyvie · 13/05/2019 20:40

How stupid does one have to be to tweet something like that during an ongoing official investigation ?

It has now been removed for some reason

It's hardly difficult to work out why.

Mnbb · 13/05/2019 21:09

The complaints of bullying are trans related.

Procrastinator2 · 13/05/2019 21:20

Joanna Cherry was magnificent when she took on a woman from Twitter about Twitter's misogynistic rules at Westminster's Human Rights Committee. I think the link has already been posted on another thread. She is a QC and shouldn't really be mentioned in the same breath as Hayden.

LassOfFyvie · 13/05/2019 21:30

Mnbb

The complaints of bullying are trans related

You cannot possibly know that unless you are either one of the 4 complainers or are involved in the parliamentary investigation. If you are either of these you shouldn't be posting about it on here.

DpWm · 13/05/2019 21:34

Cherry tried to discredit a nurse... saying the nurse only spoke up because the nurse was married to a Tory councillor

She also criticised Emily Thornberry for missing an important Commons vote when Thornberry was at a hospital with a sick child

Do these things amount to bullying now?
How thin skinned have people become that they can't take any criticism.

I agree it's a coincidence that everyone is now talking about these complaints that were made against Cherry so many months ago, all of a sudden.

LassOfFyvie · 13/05/2019 21:43

Do these things amount to bullying now?

No they clearly don't. They merely show Cherry isn't all sweetness and light and incapable of doing wrong as some of you seem to think.

I agree it's a coincidence that everyone is now talking about these complaints that were made against Cherry so many months ago, all of a sudden

It seems quite simple to me. Iona Paton, one the people making the allegations, thinks it is hypocritical of Cherry to speak out about how Cherry is treated whilst these allegations are pending.
