CRUK - "Cervix havers" update

Remember that?

I just took a mosey on over to see if CRUK were still blinded by their halo of woke. Looks like someone grown up has finally taken control of the website!

Not only have the used plain, easily understandable language, they have also clearly signposted a separate document which equally clearly informs trans people what will happen/what they may need to do to receive the correct healthcare for their sex.

I mean, well done CRUK for finally realising cancer doesn't give a shit what internal mystical essence you might have, but you lost many of us (me a decades-long donor) over it. Not that you ever bothered to reply to me when I took the trouble to write and tell you exactly that...

whoop whoop! why does cancer bloody research acknowledging biological reality feel like a win? well anyway, it does. Hurrah!

JackyHolyoake · 12/05/2019 10:26

This is very good news! Thank you Buzz. Flowers

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 12/05/2019 10:29

why does cancer bloody research acknowledging biological reality feel like a win?

Shows how bad things have got. Fighting for women's rights has never been easy, but now it's like trudging uphill in heavy mud with the rain tipping down.

teawamutu · 12/05/2019 10:36

But if we keep trudging, things change. Puuuullll!

DuMondeB · 12/05/2019 10:37

This is fantastic news.

I want all female people to receive appropriate care and ‘plain language’ is a necessary part of that aim.
I also absolutely welcome additional documentation aimed at those who need it phrased differently.

Well done CRUK (finally).

Insertwitticismhere · 12/05/2019 13:27

A chink of common sense in a world of woke! I'm ridiculously pleased about this. The tale of CRUK using 'cervix havers' was one of my go to illustrations of how out of control this movement has got.

AdiosAdipose · 12/05/2019 13:31

This is fantastic news.

My mother had cervical cancer when I was in my teens and I supported the charity for years after - raising quite a chunk of money through various activities. I stopped when all this 'person with a cervix' nonsense started but would be happy to help again now they have seen sense!

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 12/05/2019 13:33

That is lovely to see!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 12/05/2019 13:37

I wonder if the Eyes will now start up at CRUK for daring to be so disgustingly transphobic?

OP posts:
goodwinter · 12/05/2019 13:40

Can anyone tell me what it said before?

TheInebriati · 12/05/2019 14:04

goodwinter
It said 'cervical screening (or the smear test) is relevant for everyone aged 25 - 64 with a cervix''. The word 'women' was not used at all.
Several people pointed out that information was useless to many women, including women who use English as a second language.

SophoclesTheFox · 12/05/2019 14:07

Now that’s a sensible piece of writing. Well done CRUK.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 12/05/2019 14:08

I'm so glad to read this!

Making sure women get access to tests/smears is far, far more important than playing the game of political correctness!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 12/05/2019 14:32

Oh, and I also got my smear reminder recently too, and am pleased to say the official NHS leaflet is exactly as unambiguous as well. Very clear and informative.

And (notably) says [my bold]:
"Cervical screening is usually carried out by a female nurse or doctor. If you want to make sure a woman carries out your test, you can ask for this..."

In the context of the wider language of the leaflet, I think they are being 100% clear that woman = Adult Human Female, not the ladybrain type.

What an excellent turn of eventsSmile

ChattyLion · 12/05/2019 14:37

That’s an excellent leaflet by CRUK for trans people. Good.
Glad they have seen sense because nobody wins unless we can speak honestly to each other.

ChattyLion · 12/05/2019 14:38

Though the leaflet says that being on hormones a long time can increase cancer risks (they mentioned breast cancer risk on male bodies).

Is that discussed with the parents and children being put on cross-sex hormones at young ages?

JellySlice · 12/05/2019 14:43

And that is how to be genuinely and honestly trans-inclusive.

Being mindful of language for the majority of women who do not identify as non-binary or trans, while taking into account this tiny minority, respecting their feelings and avoiding erasing either group.

Sexnotgender · 12/05/2019 14:45

Glad they have seen sense because nobody wins unless we can speak honestly to each other.

Totally agree. There needs to be accurate accessible information for all parties. Obfuscating confusing language does everybody a disservice and it needs to stop.
Women and transwomen are NOT the same thing.
Men and transmen are NOT the same thing.

Creating false equivalencies particularly in healthcare is massively detrimental to both parties. Men and women however they choose to present themselves have different biological and healthcare needs.

StoatofDisarray · 12/05/2019 14:52

That's fantastic news!

truthisarevolutionaryact · 12/05/2019 14:55

It's great news but awful that it even happened.

MissEyre · 12/05/2019 16:26

Well done CRUK.

I raised this issue with my MP so I guess I should now write to him and let him know about the change so he can see that no one is being denied the right to exist etc etc.

goodwinter · 12/05/2019 16:43

@TheInebriati thank you!

ScrimshawTheSecond · 12/05/2019 17:38

Good stuff! It almost makes me want to go and get a smear test.

Stiffasaboard · 12/05/2019 17:50

Oh wow such good news
