Scotsman article here

So far they have been firm re. protecting freedom of speech, but the pressure is escalating and will continue, and they will keep a close eye on the balance of negative/positive correspondence.

The event details are here.

If any of you could write in support of the event the key recipients would be the head of the School of Education Prof. Rowena Arshad ([email protected]) and the Principal Prof. Peter Mathieson ([email protected]).

Security stepped in.
I'm appalled by this from Lighthouse Books.

Burn the witches. Who dare to speak

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 05/06/2019 23:21

I hope Bindel reports the assault to the police as a hate crime...

HandsOffMyRights · 05/06/2019 23:21

Julie has confirmed on Twitter it was Brennan.
So is this what we have to look forward to in our spaces if we anger the men folk?

So sick of women being fair game for abuse while the world cheers on for brave and stunning, gentler, kinder bullshit.

Imagine if this were the other way round? There would be an uproar.

GCAcademic · 05/06/2019 23:22

This is the fragrant and feminine Cathy:

Frusty · 05/06/2019 23:26

I'm in agreement with them. Feminism should indeed be for all women.
Not for men though.

Frusty · 05/06/2019 23:27

Sorry that was about shitehouse books.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 05/06/2019 23:32

What happened to lighthouse books? Did a new ‘person’ take over or something? Who runs it now?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 05/06/2019 23:38

So the police will do what then? Nothing? A man attacks a woman and nothing. But a woman speaks and 4 police and their horse turn up.

When will people wake up?

AlwaysComingHome · 05/06/2019 23:38

Does Lighthouse refer to one of those Victorian ones which were gas-lit?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 05/06/2019 23:39

Full of gas, yes.

OvaHere · 05/06/2019 23:39

Disgusting but completely predictable behaviour. Glad Julie is okay and I hope she reports this as a hate crime against a protected class.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 05/06/2019 23:42

Indeed.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 05/06/2019 23:42

Does this person say they are a woman?

LassOfFyvie · 05/06/2019 23:44

Did the event finish sharp at 7 ?

I happened to be parking in George Square at 7pm. There was a taxi waiting outside no. 55. Professor Freedman and Ms Bindel were there with several security staff. A trans person was there shouting they are a piece of shit. Security people told them to calm down and they shouted why the fuck should they and that this is the reason their friend committed suicide.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 05/06/2019 23:46

I wonder if that is true or a bit of hysterical nonsense/lies.

ImmortalityMyDarlings · 05/06/2019 23:53

Cathy Brennan can’t be his name - unless it’s a major coincidence? The actual Cathy Brennan is an American feminist and lawyer. Used to be pretty big in gender criticism but has gone very quiet.

GrumpyCatLives · 06/06/2019 00:05

Congrats Cathy- this is the most famous you will ever be, and it's for hitting a woman. Good luck explaining that at job interviews.

RosaFreedman1983 · 06/06/2019 00:53

Dear All

Firstly, thank you to all the mumsnet people who came to the event tonight. I was so impressed by the talk about mumsnet, particularly from a personal POV as someone who does not engage on this platform (despite having a nearly-10 year old child) other than via the women's rights section!

Secondly, just to say that Julie was shaken but not physically harmed. We left at 7pm to get a taxi to the airport for the last Edinburgh-London flight (as we both have work commitments tomorrow), and were accosted by a vocal TRA. The university security were great, and protected Julie (who was the focus of this person's anger and attack), and by the time we got to the airport she was much calmer despite being visibly shaken by the assault.

Just wanted to put this here as a reassurance for those not on Twitter, and because she is travelling abroad in a few hours and might not be on social media.

Thank you again for being awesome tonight and, indeed, always

Rosa

Mbwashenzi · 06/06/2019 00:56

Thanks Rosa. You were both tremendous. I hope you and Julie come back to Edinbirth soon and let us spoil you rotten!

Datun · 06/06/2019 00:58

Dear lord. This ideology is a magnet for every violent, unhinged woman hater on the planet.

ChattyLion · 06/06/2019 01:59

Relieved to hear JB is OK after that horrible experience Flowers and glad that the event discussion itself was allowed to go ahead and was good.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 06/06/2019 06:13

Rosa thanks for the update.

I'm so glad you are both ok. What terrible behaviour.

I was interested in the attacker tagging Alison Phipps in their tweets. I thought gc feminists where the "Right wing" bad guys.... But I don't see women running around trying to physically attack TRAs. #awkward

Yep, this

And presumably 'Cathy Brennan' isn't the legal name of this person yet we all seemingly have to dignify these delusions by using it. It's MRA hiding in plain sight, backed our institutions and by using the name of a well known American feminist, blatantly mocking us.

Cwenthryth · 06/06/2019 06:48

I’m fuming about this, the police had better take action.

“I would very much like people to let me reach out and let me have my say about the incident”
That’s not how it works, ducky. You get to have your say when the police question you and when you defend the prosecution for common assault*.

*don’t know if the Scottish system is the same but believe this would be the offence committed in E&W.

Disgusting, misogynistic violence. Completely unacceptable, doesn’t matter how upset you are. As for “I’m safe” - of course you bloody are, you’re a hulking great male-bodied person who attacked an older female for thought-crime. You were never not safe.
