Scotsman article here

So far they have been firm re. protecting freedom of speech, but the pressure is escalating and will continue, and they will keep a close eye on the balance of negative/positive correspondence.

The event details are here.

If any of you could write in support of the event the key recipients would be the head of the School of Education Prof. Rowena Arshad ([email protected]) and the Principal Prof. Peter Mathieson ([email protected]).

Hurrah!

BetsyM00 · 09/05/2019 19:02

Thanks JackyHolyoake

There's a Scottish version which has recently been issued to all Scottish universities:

That looks good, it’s a shame it’s sold out.

If you like that, you’ll like this: the actual authors of the Declaration are speaking, in Leeds: including Sheila Jeffreys!

You need an access code to get a ticket. You can email the organisers to get it. I just got it, so PM me if you want it

@Pickles those posts are Hillarious, "This is a violent event" how can anyone write that with a straight face. Mind you if/when TRA turn up they will probably be violent but not the event itself 😂😂😂

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 02/06/2019 20:02

Anyone else going to this on Wednesday?

ApplePenPineapplePen · 02/06/2019 22:29

I'm going. Slightly nervous tbh.

CharlieParley · 02/06/2019 22:56

Going, too. No need to be nervous, but if you'd feel better meeting up beforehand, feel free to send me a message.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 02/06/2019 23:07

I went to a WPUK meeting last February in Edinburgh and there was a protest outside. It did make me feel nervous but a couple of women saw me hanging back and offered to walk in together. That helped, but actually it would have been fine. They're not going to touch you, just walk past them.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 02/06/2019 23:09

I'm looking forward to it. Although I'm annoyed that it can possibly be considered to be controversial.

TitianaTitsling · 02/06/2019 23:12

I'm alumni of Edinburgh uni, wish had been aware of this earlier than this, annoyed with self! Will be emailing my support!

Mbwashenzi · 02/06/2019 23:19

I'm going. If the protest is anything like the one outside Holyrood for Meghan Murphy 2 weeks back there'll be nothing to worry about: one beardy fella and four or five peely-wally handmaidens.

FermatsTheorem · 02/06/2019 23:34

"peely-wally" - I love that phrase! My mum used to use it a lot.

Auldspinster · 03/06/2019 01:58

I'm going too.

ApplePenPineapplePen · 03/06/2019 08:41

Thanks @charleyparley and others. I am looking forward to connecting with people in real life about this, rather than just following and occasionally contributing online.

morningtoncrescent62 · 03/06/2019 11:13

There's been petition against it doing the rounds, full of the usual hyperbole. Well done, Edinburgh Uni, for holding firm.

Mbwashenzi · 03/06/2019 13:40

That petition is defamatory. If I were one of the speakers I'd have a lawyer look at it good and hard.

Butchyrestingface · 03/06/2019 14:03

Edinburgh uni hosted a transgender event last week. According to Twitter, it imploded in a shitstorm of accusations and recriminations between the delegates and organisers.

No picketting or petitions from evil TERFs though.

Mbwashenzi · 03/06/2019 14:18

Have a look at #transcon19 on Twitter for some of the unhappiness around that conference. My guess would be Edinburgh University is well aware of all this.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/06/2019 14:39

Have a look at #transcon19 on Twitter for some of the unhappiness around that conference.

Goodness me, it's just one long moan, isn't it!

twitter.com/hashtag/transcon19?src=hashtag_click

Mijke van der Drift from Goldsmiths who was to give a paper titled ‘The Truth of Trans and the Right to Disappear in an Age of Visibility’ has opted to not to present and to ask that the conference consider ways to unlearn privilege and ask what social justice is #TransCon19

There seem to have been a great many ruffled feathers.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/06/2019 14:53

Radical suggestion for #transliberation: all trans prisoners become understood as political prisoners because it is the structure of the current world system that forces trans people to commit what are perceived as ‘illicit acts’ (Contreras Ruvalcaba) #TransCon19

Really. Hmm Interesting that this appears to have been presented on the same day as a talk from a family member of a transwoman from the Philippines who was murdered by a US Marine, who's still at large. But presumably 'cis' murderers don't do what they do for political reasons.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 03/06/2019 14:59

Hmm. I don't know, is this like jock itch?

The person who put that slide up is a transman, I think, who came to the UK as an asylum seeker from Egypt. It can't be easy at all being a woman in a strict Islamic country. We know from Iran that hormones and surgery are presented to gay men as an alternative to imprisonment or even capital punishment for their sexual orientation.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 03/06/2019 15:11

Rubbishrobot I was at the Feb 18 event.
Please come and say hi if you recognize me (and anyone else).

According to the fb event page for the protest there's at least one bloke attending that who has a ticket for the discussion.

So it might be a bit more debatey and a little less sharey but if anyone can handle that it's Julie Bindel

ScrimshawTheSecond · 03/06/2019 15:12

I'm sure it's not easy to be a woman in Iran. But the slide shows pretty clearly where the ideology comes from - a belief in gendered souls. That is fine, so long as people are open and honest about it. I don't think it's something the UK should be basing policy on.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 03/06/2019 15:15

Oh #TransCon19 is taking me back to the wholesome days of #NusTrans18 and all the fun that was had with toilets and the boarder force.

Whilst it doesn't seem to have reached the heady heights of that farce, there are some crackers on that hashtag.

Couple of favourites, a white person who shouldn't speak because they are white whilst simultaneously should have spoken because they are white. Oh so complicated being Woke.

Also it's lovely to see the sweet dears that are sisters uncut having a little squabble.

None of these people are 👀👀👀👀, no not at all.
