Teeside University survey on sex and gender in sport - hopelessly invalid in structure

stumbledin · 04/05/2019 23:49

Its another of those surely this is a spoof, but apparently this is a serious survey.

If conflates sex and gender, it talks about cisgender, it seems to think sportswomen objecting to trans women in female sports are doing this based on cultural attitudes.

There's no enough space on the survey to give all criticisms, so I used the location question.

How is it possible that Universities aren't embarrassed to have invalid surveys circulated in their name.

If you want a good laugh - or cry - or feel you could help educate the researcher the link to the survey is teesside.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/transgender-and-sport

They also dont seem to have implemented the settings to stop people filling it in more than once.

Sad Angry

Hi - there was already a thread on this that MNHQ decided to move to surveys, which seems a shame as it'll get less attention there.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/surveys_students_non_profits_and_start_ups/3577298-Trans-in-sports-survey

The survey is obviously biased. Someone said it was set up by Ellis Cashmore. twitter.com/elliscashmore

stumbledin · 05/05/2019 00:52

Hi NotTerfNorCis

Thanks for this info.

I didn't go into to it in much detail but in case it isn't clear please not MNHQ this is on the feminist chat thread to contribute to the ongoing collation of evidence about just how far and how dangerous the trans indoctrination has gone.

Idealy I would hope someone with the "status" of being a researcher or academic would contact the originator of this survey and / or the University and point out just what a completely unprofessional slanted, self serving survey it is.

These surveys keep coming up, the GRA, City of London, and they are just not valid surveys.

We need to point this out.

Can you imagine the uproar if someone posted a survey as a researched that had leading questions about men.

There would be a twitter tirade, Pink Newsies and MRAs complaining loudly about anti male feminst witches.

The point is this survey is total crap.

There could be a very interesting survey on the issue of sex and gender in sport.

This isn't it.

Or maybe Universities are now lke so much else in the world and it isn't really a researcher but someone on a zero hours contract who stands in as a researcher when needed to pad out the staff quota.

It just makes my hear hurt.

Its had enough having to present information about sex and gender but to then be sent down these cul de sacs of Emporer's New Clothes reality is just demoralising.

Why you should be wary of agree/disagree statements.

Seems like they never read or considered any of the points in this article.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 05/05/2019 02:09

A bit off topic but nellodee that is why the Scottish independence referendum was unfair - the question asked if people agreed Scotland should be independent. The question should never have been allowed.

Reside Uni went bankrupt last year, I think?

LegoToast · 05/05/2019 02:47

*Teeside

moonrises · 05/05/2019 09:42

I can assure you Teesside University is very much still there.

There is no Teeside (my fingers itch just writing that)

GCAcademic · 05/05/2019 09:50

Although it’s anticipated that it may happen, no university in the U.K. has yet gone bankrupt.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/05/2019 10:16

I used to know Cashmore (I say know, he was a visiting lecture, he used to be far less flash and far more interesting) so I included a statement directly to him...

I'm forwarding the link to others who worked with him 20+ years ago!!!

Outanabout · 05/05/2019 10:33

Ot was interesting that at the end of the survey it gave a link 'if you have been affected by any of the issues...', but not a single one of the support agencies was for women affected by the inclusion of trans in sport. All for the trans. Fuck women. No wonder men are so entitled, the world revolves around them and their feelings.

CannyLad · 05/05/2019 10:41

At my university all research has to be approved by an ethics committee. You could try contacting the university and ask if this has been reviewed and if it meets the criteria. Unfortunately I don't think it goes to the extent of preventing crap research just unethical but worth a try?

GCAcademic · 05/05/2019 10:57

Yes, I was also thinking that it might be fruitful to contact the Chair of the Ethics Committee.

Daughterofmabel · 05/05/2019 11:21

Filled it in. Let them have it!

TheInebriati · 05/05/2019 11:31

I didn't realise it was written by an academic, I thought it was by a student.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 05/05/2019 11:49

Quite enjoyed that.

Appalling survey. If I were supervising that project I'd send the student back to start again.

I'v mentioned that a few times in my replies.

Antibles · 05/05/2019 14:44

Done. How they will probably 'interpret' the data won't surprise me. I can see the publication now: "Our research revealed there is a huge amount of transphobia still in existence, blah blah blah, mansplain, transplain..."

That rainbow running track Hmm I do fancy some rainbow cake now though...

AlwaysTawnyOwl · 05/05/2019 15:06

I’ve looked it through and will fill it in. It’s one of the most piss poor questionnaires I’ve ever seen and I have a PhD. Leading questions, unclear terms, clearing serving an agenda. Letter of complaint to the uni helpful.

StealthPolarBear · 05/05/2019 15:10

Teesside University has not gone bankrupt!

AnyOldPrion · 05/05/2019 15:12

“Mouncey is an entitled male, who is using his male privilege to (literally) mow women down who get in his way.”

I rather enjoyed that, though I had to grit my teeth and click on “I’d rather not say” when asked about my gender, rather than the more truthful response: that I don’t have one.

VickyEadie · 05/05/2019 15:29

Just dropping in to mention that you can complete it as often as you like.

Just sayin'...

GCAcademic · 05/05/2019 15:32

I doubt it matters how many times you fill it in. It’s clear that the academics behind this have no commitment to ethical or evidenced research. They will weaponise the responses to fit their agenda.

NotTerfNorCis · 05/05/2019 15:35

Unsurprisingly, the link to the BBC article is heavily pro transwomen in women's sport. It's practically written by Rachel McKinnon. But it's presented as an impartial resource.

AnyOldPrion · 05/05/2019 15:52

They will weaponise the responses to fit their agenda.

Ah yes. The unprecedented, unexplainable rise in appalling transphobia amongst grumpy older women. It really is a complete mystery that this strange phenomenon has occurred now.

Quite coincidentally, awareness of a campaign to grant men access to women’s spaces without gatekeeping under law has increased, but this can’t possibly have any bearing.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 05/05/2019 16:33

Filled it in but oh my god. Who the hell wrote that?

TimeLady · 05/05/2019 16:59

Well, that was a waste of ten minutes. How much funding did that crap generate?
