Teeside University survey on sex and gender in sport - hopelessly invalid in structure

Its another of those surely this is a spoof, but apparently this is a serious survey.

If conflates sex and gender, it talks about cisgender, it seems to think sportswomen objecting to trans women in female sports are doing this based on cultural attitudes.

There's no enough space on the survey to give all criticisms, so I used the location question.

How is it possible that Universities aren't embarrassed to have invalid surveys circulated in their name.

They also dont seem to have implemented the settings to stop people filling it in more than once.

Just filled it in. WTF. A 5 year old could design a better survey. I totally agree that they will skew the results to claim massive transphobia rather than massive legal and justified opposition from female athletes and their supporters.

It's quite bizarre to name specific people in a survey like this. I'm not sure it's in at all ethical for one thing to draw attention to a particular person. Besides, many people may not know who the person is. Says all you need to know about the validity of this "research" really.

But also thanks to MNHQ for not moving it to surveys. I think it is really important that we publicly challenge totally unprofessional, biased surveys. It wasn't that long ago that there was that on funded by the ESRC (a 6 figure amount) also on gender which was blatantly rigged.

Maybe we can agree something in a post title to show it is about challenging the design of a survey rather than just asking MNers to sign a petition. For instance "Dodgy Data Alert" or something!

And build up knowledge on how to report, eg funders, University Committees or whatever.

This one really is so shoddy. Almost a spoof.

Well, I've filled it in. Rather badly designed & it wouldn't get through my university's Ethics committee.

And not only badly designed - inaccurate in asking for "gender" rather than sex. The really useful information they could get from asking for peoples sex, then asking for gender identification, with the possibility of being sex = female; gender identification = none.

I wonder who was behind it and what they were trying to prove. I bet the results are a laugh actually. Certainly an excellent example of how not to do a survey.

I didn't realise it was written by an academic, I thought it was by a student.

I thought this too, though mind you one of my fellow PhD students when I was doing mine had a supervisor who used to turn out the worst back-of-an-envelope surveys ever which were clearly designed to produce exactly the result he wanted. She had to lick them into shape most of the time.
