Shaun Dellenty - the 'new' Andrew Moffatt

I've recently come across this author/speaker:

shaundellenty.com/

www.<a class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/Celebrating-Difference-Shaun-Dellenty/dp/1472961501/ref=nodl_?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-womens-rights-3576819-Shaun-Dellenty-the-new-Andrew-Moffatt" rel="nofollow" target="blank">amazon.co.uk/Celebrating-Difference-Shaun-Dellenty/dp/1472961501/ref=nodl

Like Andrew Moffatt, he is a gay man and (I believe) a former educator.

He goes into schools to talk about his book/LGBT inclusion and has an upcoming webinar for teachers via the National College.

His book is also endorsed by Peter Tatchell and Michael Cashman. The latter has recently tweeted out about Dellenty's book.

Is anybody familiar with him? Do we know if this inclusion supports girls/young lesbians?

After Andrew Moffatt's take on the EA and the questions around his work (great article via Transgendertrend) I find myself questionning any of the males going into schools to talk about inclusion, based on their experience as a homosexual man.

When I think about it, it only seems to be males or gay males influencing schools.
I've witnessed in my niece's school, in a privileged area, as the wealthy head boy is treated like a God, seemingly just because he is gay. Meanwhile, a friend's lesbian daughter is convinced she's trans now and a straight male.

Back to Dellenty - It may be this book and author do prioritise young girls and lesbians, but I am curious to find out more as I am hearing Dellenty's names and tweets crop up more and more in education.

Background from Amazon Biography:

"Shaun Dellenty is a multi-award-winning educator, trainer, inspirational speaker, blogger, author and pioneering advocate for LGBT+ inclusion in education. The book 'Celebrating Difference- A Whole School Approach to LGBT+ Inclusion' by Shaun Dellenty was cited and recommended in April 24th 2019 by Lord Michael Cashman in the House of Lords during the Lords debate on Sex and Relationships Education. In 2009 Shaun’s London school found 75% of primary aged pupils experienced daily homophobia. Using this data as a trigger Shaun ‘came out’ as gay to his school community and devised the ‘Inclusion For All’ programme training educators to facilitate organisational change in respect of compassionate LGBT+ inclusion and highlighting the potentially lifesaving impact of positive LGBT+ inclusion. Shaun has worked with countless U.K. and overseas primary and secondary schools, faith schools, teacher training faculties and many other educational and global business contexts, including work at education committee and government policy level. Shaun's work has been recommended by the Department of Education, Amnesty International, the Church of England and the Faiths and Beliefs Forum. Shaun also recounts his inspiring personal story of surviving and ultimately thriving after child-hood homophobic bullying to audiences around the world. Shaun’s work has been reported in the national and international media and television and he has written for many publications including The Huffington Post, Times Education Supplement, The Guardian and Thomson Reuters. Shaun is also a regular speaker at LGBT+ Pride, hate-crime and national and international anti-bullying events and education conferences. His book 'Celebrating Difference-A Whole School Approach to LGBT+ Inclusion' published by Bloomsbury Education in May 2019 marks the first time he has captured his own journey and his award-winning approach to organisational change in the written form and the book features case studies and testimonials from many of those who undertaken Shaun's inspirational training.

Endorsed by Tatchell?

That’s a ‘No’ from me!

terryleather · 04/05/2019 10:47

As an aside I've been struck for a while now at the myriad interconnected mutually backslapping events/awards/schemes (and I presume money) that's connected to diversity & inclusion.

I'm curious as to what it actually, measurably achieves...

HandsOffMyRights · 04/05/2019 12:17

After Andrew Moffatt and my own son's Stonewall Champion status, it strikes me that we don't know who is in schools and saying what.

Moffatt and Stonewall's anti bullying work for example has been robust in regards to homophobia (well in the past). But it seems that so many middle aged gay men are supporting males but not girls and I do not know if these author educators have girls' interests at heart.

But it feels like it's men who are leading this. Men talking about their own experiences with homophobia but possibly (and I haven't heard Shaun speak) throwing girls and women under the bus at the same time. Meanwhile, such teaching, while aiming to empower everyone, may result in girls becoming even less visible and boys becoming even more confident.

So the head boy I mentioned in my first post has pushed Stonewall's agenda in school to the point where the school is now fundraising for Stonewall and asking parents to fundraise, has the trans flag draped over by the girls' loos and includes talks by prominent (male) speakers on LGBT.
To the extent where young lesbians are told they are actually straight males.

This head boy is leaving, but apparently there's a rising head boy coming through the ranks (again gay, very outspoken) and the heads and teachers are gushing over him because he's been so brave in coming out. Because he (a boy) represents inclusivity and acceptance for all.

Yes, I can't imagine how hard it was but the current head boy so supported, given free rein to invite in speakers, organise events and educate teachers on how to be more accommodating to those who feel they were 'born in the wring body'. Meanwhile a young lesbian has been 'transed'. She's 13.

It feels that males are celebrated, vocal in schools and education. How can a young girl relate to these authors' advice, if that advice (in the case of Moffatt) is also damaging to young girls?

When are the females, Stephanie from Transgender Trend for example, going to be allowed in schools? To empower young girls.

I'm sceptical. Another male promoting LGBT inclusion now makes me naturally suspicious.

So that’s now a ‘No’ from me because it’s endorsed by Tatchell and Michael Cashman (I’d forgotten the name, thanks for the reminder about who he is).

‘the potentially lifesaving impact of positive LGBT+ inclusion’ Another ‘No’ from me.

In fact with the further info, that’s not just a ‘No’ from me that’s a ‘fuck off and stay away from children’ coupled with my usual rage about why nobody in government understands basic safeguarding or gives a shit about women’s rights.

Email schools and MP’s time again?

Lungelady · 04/05/2019 12:19

Met him years ago through anti bullying work

HandsOffMyRights · 04/05/2019 12:32

Were you in any of these workshops/visits Lunge (see tweet link)? Curious as to what his beliefs are regarding gender ideology, but again, I am basing my posts on not having met him or seen him speak.

The forthcoming webinar has been promoted by the DfE and he regularly visits schools

And? Don’t leave us hanging.

Lungelady · 04/05/2019 12:44

This is going back about 8 years when he was still in teaching. In the days when it was less complicated. I remember him as a good motivational speaker . No idea what agenda he has these days.

To PP of course boys are celebrated encouraged girls not is same as ever.

I see this in work gay men everywhere very few out lesbians out.

LuckyAtCards · 04/05/2019 12:55

I am a secondary school teacher. This academic year he has delivered in my school a two hour whole-school staff training session in addition to a number of hour-long presentations to a number of year groups.

It was awful, and many of the staff I have spoken with were quite unhappy with it.

First, the man is an absolute monstrous egotist. The whole thrust of what he said (in both the staff training and the pupil presentations) was "I'm amazing. I've been through so, so, so much! I had a horrible, horrible, experience being a gay child, I tried to commit suicide (more on that in a moment) but now I'm amazing! Look at this picture of me with David Cameron! Look at this picture of me getting an award! Look at all these glowing quotes that people have said about me. Look at this picture of my husband! I fancy Benny from Abba!". The whole thing was just some weird ego wanking, dressed up as furthering a vague idea of 'gay acceptance'.

We are professionals - we understand that our own personal viewpoints on homosexuality are irrelevant when dealing with children in our care, we don't need to preached at about how people shouldn't be homophobic. What we needed in staff training was not to be told that it's A-OK to be gay and you're a bigot if you disagree otherwise these children will kill themselves, we needed to be given practical guidance. Such as: what is the best way to support a child who is gay or lesbian in your classroom? What's the best way to manage any issues that arise with peers or bullying? What are the correct (and incorrect) things to say to a child who comes out to you? etc. But there was nothing whatsoever on this.

Further, there is a large Muslim population in my school (both staff and pupils) and this is complicated when supporting gay and lesbian pupils. Many of our Muslim pupils express attitudes that is is wrong and haram to be gay. Dellenty's response to this was tell them that it's fine to be gay - why should they care what someone else does with their genitals, and remind them that it will really hurt their gay peers feelings if they believe this. Simplistic drivel, basically, and in no way giving us guidance in how to practically address this very complicated and sensitive issue.

Secondly, I was appalled at his constant reference to the fact that he attempted to kill himself as a teen as a result of homophobia. Apart from that fact that it was used as as sort of hyperbolic blackmail (be nice to gay people or they will kill themselves!), I thought it was deeply irresponsible and contravened guidelines about reporting of suicides to vulnerable groups. The Year 8 session I supervised involved him referencing his suicide attempt and the high rates of suicide ideation in young gays and lesbians upteen times.

Regarding trans stuff, which many of us were keen to have some training on, he refused to go near it all. Just said repeatedly that it's fine to be trans but we should get a trans specialist in for that.

In essence: I think the man is a self-serving narcissist - most of what he delivers is useless and some actively dangerous.

LuckyAtCards · 04/05/2019 12:59

To clarify - I very much support promoting acceptance and tolerance of homosexuality in schools (and elsewhere). I don't think that this message is wrong. I do however think that this does not constitute effective staff training.

I agree with a PP who suggested that he was more of a motivational speaker than anything else (though I'd disagree that he's necessarily good at this).

RepealTheGRA · 04/05/2019 13:07

Great post LuckyAtCards really glad to hear that secondary schools retain staff that think like you in them.

I believe massively in inclusion in education but drivel like this has pushed me to the point where I’m automatically suspicious the minute I see the fucking word ‘inclusive’.

There was nothing in your first post that made me think you didn’t support promoting acceptance and tolerance of homosexuality.

R0wantrees · 04/05/2019 13:11

I was just reading this article on narcissistic supply:

HandsOffMyRights · 04/05/2019 13:22

Thank you Lucky

Agreed that I want our children to learn about inclusivity, but when that includes excluding lesbians or bringing any kind of fetishes/kinks (please see previous Transgender post about the orgins of Andrew Moffatt's work) I take issue.

Weaponising suicide and conflating sex and sexuality is a huge part of what's wrong with so many of these trainers. Still shuddering over Jan the trainer from Mermaids!
.
Also, just because somebody is a gay male it doesn't mean that this gives them a free pass to talk about issues that affect females or that they are naturally a great guy or even support women.

I know of three 'media' doctors, Raj, Jessen and Harrop, who fit into this category. If they, or Tara Hewitt say, came to speak to a class of children about LGBT inclusivity, what would they say?

In short, who is vetting trainers, visitors, external speakers? Nobody.

howonearthdidwegethere · 04/05/2019 13:28

In Scotland, there is a campaign group called TIE (Time for Inclusive Education) and they've successfully persuaded the Scottish Govt to endorse '"LGBT inclusive education" (I'm still not sure what that means in practice).

And guess what? TIE's staff are all male. Not a single female or lesbian amongst them.

Where are the role models for young girls who are same-sex attracted? Any wonder many now think if they are same-sex attracted and gender non-conforming, they must be boys?

Does anyone know more about TIE? They've tweeted recently that they're angry the Scottish Govt hasn't given them funding to advance their work.

Can anybody tell me know how this kind of nonsense will actually feed into schools. We have one dc about to go into secondary, and two in primary. I’ve got no idea about secondary at all or what level of input to expect from them
on this. Although speaking to a friend who’s dd goes to a local girls school I’m pretty shocked at the level of indoctrination there. I’m presuming that lessons in PHSE would be the main avenue. I don’t want my children indoctrinated in the ways of middle aged men who think they know what’s best for girls and women. Do people know if it’s possible to ask for your child to be removed from classes which have dodgy inclusion ethics that don’t actually support women and girls?

Janice Turner Time article about the Mermaids teacher training course:
'Trans ideologists are spreading cod science'
(extract)
re you a Princess Barbie jelly-baby who likes frilly dresses, high heels and takes ages to get ready? Or a GI Joe jelly-baby who wears boots and functional clothing? Did you know that your preference for pink sparkles or muddy sports isn’t down to societal expectations of boys and girls. No, it’s written in your chromosomes. And that’s science.

Well, science according to Mermaids, the charity for trans children, in a presentation understood to be given to thousands of teachers, health workers, police and politicians, and part-funded by the Department for Education.

I listened to a recording of this bizarre 90-minute training lecture and wish others could too. Particularly those who pride themselves on rationality and evidence-based thinking: atheists, fans of Richard Dawkins and Ben Goldacre’s Bad Science; those incensed by climate change deniers on TV or creationists in schools; the same people who are tweeting #istandwithmermaids because the Big Lottery Fund is reviewing, in the light of an outcry, its decision to award them a £500,000 grant.

On tape the Mermaids trainer tells us that humans don’t come in two sexes, male and female, sperm and ovum: “Most people still think that way,” she says airily. “But what we know now, thanks to advances in science, is that the human race has up to 42 different sets of chromosomes.”

Biological sex is on a spectrum, she says, like skin tone and (seriously) bra size. A person’s “gender identity jelly baby” has nothing to do with how we are raised: it is inside you at birth. You know you are a man because you walk like a man and like “manly” things. A listener questions why this lecture is based upon stereotypes and is told “you’re going too clever” (continues)

Red flags over the lack of answers re TIE and any lesbian involvement.

Thanks R0wan for the comprehensive links again. My post is dancing around a bit because it seems to come back to safeguarding. To men, whose agendas and backgrounds may be ambiguous or disingenuous (at best - and we know the at worst equals the Challenors) influencing LGBT policy and teaching, while, in many cases, being given unfetered access to schools, charities, clubs and businesses, poweful supporters and funding.

There is absolutely zero regulation.
