The attempt to take away the term ‘transsexual’ (and indeed, it’s colloquial diminutive ‘tr*y’) from those who have come to terms with it as a descriptor for their own experience reminds me of the removal of ‘Asperger Syndrome’ from the DSM 5. People who had been content to self describe as ‘aspies’ had that language taken from them.
There were sound political and practical reasons for the switch to ASD (and I suppose you could argue that as no one actually changes sex, there is a sound reason for retiring ‘transsexual’ too) but unlike Asperger/ASD, retiring transsexual does absolutely nothing in practical terms for those whom’s life experience it is currently used to describe.
It’s a different battle to ours, but it’s a strikingly similar situation, fought on the same battlegrounds against the same TRA enemies.
