Buck - the ‘terves and swerves’ of Mumsnet are here with
if you need us!
I’ve always said I would be happy to join the fight for trans rights if trans activists were asking for solidarity in matters of inequality that have a material basis - wtf is going on with trans people and HIV rates in the US (especially black transwomen) for example? And if Transmen are being missed off of U.K. cervical cancer screening, for example, why aren’t we looking for ways to record sex and gender identity as seperate categories, so that transmen get a cervical screening letter addressed to ‘Mr’ AND an opportunity to make an appointment with a staff member with extra trans sensitivity training? Hell, big cities could probably offer occasional days where all patients attending are trans or NB identified people .
What about elderly transpeople with dementia, who are struggling with their modified bodies and minds that don’t remember why they had those surgeries?
Creating a legal fiction and overwriting birth certificates is bad for sex based rights, and bad for the actual health and well being of transpeople.
One of the recent school shooters in Colorado is a 16 year old FtM person - transgender Redditors are saying ‘this makes us look bad’ and ‘the sheriff has misgendered him, this is unacceptable’. Yet terfy ol’ me over here is worried about where this female bodied, 16 year old person is being held, because insisting on calling this mentally unhealthy vulnerable young person ‘him’ has an end point of putting them in a male jail/prison/secure psychiatric facility - why are pronouns are higher priority than physical safety and minimising the risk of sexual assault?
So yes, well done to Buck for supporting and fundraising for a trans specific shelter - addressing a material need in the trans population without overriding the rights of women.
This isn’t ‘segregation’, it’s thoughtful, tailored services for different groups of vulnerable people.
