Any thoughts on the porn ban?

Hate the Tories but I think this is the one thing they've done that I agree with. I know kids can get round it with VPNs etc, but some of the younger ones won't. Porn is a cancer imo.

Can governments really clamp down on organized crime? Lots of porn is produced by individuals not companies.

LangCleg · 23/04/2019 20:36

Lula1998 - you're not listening to what's being said. Read the posts. It's a bad law and it's not going to do what you want it to do. Pointing this out is not approving of porn.

TooTrueToBeGood · 23/04/2019 20:40

But not clamp down on the companies that profit from all this?

How exactly does the UK govt clamp down on a company that is not in the UK?

Lula1998 · 23/04/2019 20:43

My suspicion is that even if there a 'good law' it would still be shouted down on here.

Pika - governments surely should try to clam down on organised crime, do you not think? And much legal capitalist organisations are essentially no different from organised crime syndicates. They behave the same. I'd urge people to have a good critical think about this small-state, libertarian ideology they are espousing.

Well quite. Why are people kicking up such a fuss about international companies poisoning the oceans or profiting from child labour when there's bugger all we can do about it?

Governments tend to prioritize money launderers and vanity projects like the Trump Wall over the truly important stuff like homelessness or sorting out drinking water for people in Flint (US)

It's not just organized crime that produces porn. Social Services and the police could do with more money to protect the vulnerable who are at risk from their carers.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 23/04/2019 22:12

I imagined mumsnet fc to be frequented by left-wing feminists. It is, OP, but it's also populated by people who understand the technology and its properties.

A number of PP have explained why laws won't work but you just aren't listening. As for comparing online porn to prostitution - it's a nonsense.

Lula1998 · 23/04/2019 22:25

Prostitution - poor women get paid to have sex and pretend to enjoy it.

Porn - poor women get paid to have sex and pretend to enjoy it.

Please explain the difference?

OP posts:
Lula1998 · 23/04/2019 22:27

As with prostitution, many of the women are trafficked/fugitives from abusive backgrounds/from the world's poorest backgrounds. Please do not defend this vile, exploitative industry as though it isn't as bad as prostitution. It is filmed prostitution. That is what it is.

OP posts:
LangCleg · 23/04/2019 22:35

Oh for goodness sake. This board is majority leftist. It's pro-woman. It's almost 100% anti-porn and anti-prostitution.

Government has brought in a stupid, unworkable law that could actually make things worse.

Saying so does not perform some miraculous transmogrification whereby suddenly a person becomes pro-porn.

This thread is getting right on my saggy tits.

TheInebriati · 23/04/2019 22:39

As for comparing online porn to prostitution - it's a nonsense.

No it isnt. Both are abusive to women, both lead to increased trafficking and abuse expecially of underage girls. Prostitution isn't a career choice. Its what you do when you don't have any other option.

TeiTetua · 23/04/2019 22:50

I see this as a cynical or ignorant government claiming to do what people want, so they can't be accused of being presented with a problem and doing nothing.

Cynical, because they're claiming that this will work, when they know it won't. And ignorant, because some people in the government actually do think it's going to work.

But it's not entirely the government's fault, because people have demanded a ban on internet porn and won't educate themselves as to how it can't be done. What's next, a demand for nicer weather? And the government of the day will say oh yes, we'll deliver that for you.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 23/04/2019 22:54

To give context, TheInebriati, I posted Sad to say but online porn is one of the evils of the internet... We can't stop the flow.

To which OP replied Would you say the same of prostitution Prawn?

I said her analogy was nonsense because it is. Prostitution involves relatively static human beings, who are in no way comparable to the many billions of computer files that can be transmitted effortlessly around the world in the blink of an eye.

Being realistic about what can and can not be done about technology doesn't make me pro porn.

TheInebriati · 23/04/2019 23:00

Sorry, I missed that.
I don't think its possible to separate porn and prostitution, women and girls are now moved around like cattle. The demand for one feeds the other.

LangCleg · 23/04/2019 23:02

I don't think its possible to separate porn and prostitution

In the restricted sense of the topic of this thread, it is. Legal restrictions and whether or not they could/would work are entirely different animals. Which is what Prawn was pointing out.

TheInebriati · 23/04/2019 23:06

Are sex cams counted as porn or prostitution? Will they come under the porn ban?

Lula1998 · 23/04/2019 23:20

LangCleg, it seems to me that most of the posters are not just opposed to this law because they believe it to be unworkable/ineffective, but ANY possible law that the government might implement to restrict the power of porn companies in the interest of children. Please correct me if I am wrong anyone by specifying the kind of state action you would prefer to the one in question.

OP posts:
LangCleg · 23/04/2019 23:35

Lula - as I've already said, that is because you are not reading the posts. You're just setting up straw men and rushing about knocking them down. Waste of everyone's time.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 23/04/2019 23:35

Asking the questions you have tells me you haven't taken in anything several of us have been repeatedly explained to you.

I started typing a long explanation of the internet works but realized that I'm knackered and would take forever. Plus I'm not that knowledgeable, I just understand why it's almost impossible to police. And I'm not sure you're listening, Lula1998, tbh.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 23/04/2019 23:35

Please correct me if I am wrong anyone by specifying the kind of state action you would prefer to the one in question.

None. That's what I'd recommend.
The state have put ratings on films, censored them down to fit ratings.
They've stopped porn being sold in shops except for licensed premises.
That's all they need to do.

Parents.need to parent and realise what porn is and that it's not real and can be dangerous etc erc. Then take steps to stop their child accessing it, just like they stop their kids driving cars or crossing roads without looking or sticking knives in toasters.

The real solution for porn, prostitution, sexual assaults, rapes etc.etc. is massive social change that the government can't enforce. I don't know how society needs to change or how it would. But whilst an audience for porn exists and whilst there's customers for prostitutes, those businesses will always exist.

But what do I know..

Lula1998 · 23/04/2019 23:42

Why is it impossible to police Prawn? Is it a magic realm? As far as I can tell, it is run by human beings.

OP posts:
Prawnofthepatriarchy · 23/04/2019 23:44

I've wasted enough time on this. If you want to know how the internet works then do some reading.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 23/04/2019 23:47

As far as I can tell, it is run by human beings.

Hand every human being in England a photo of a red balloon and a plane ticket to anywhere.
Wait 6 months.
Now find the photos with no clue on names, places, who has the photos or if they've been swapped, trades, given, destroyed.
How well do you think you'd do?

Replace photo with porn file and people with computers.
Good luck.

Thank you for your honesty. At least someone is prepared to admit to their right-wing, pro-market politics.
