women's equality party

Just wanted to get people's views on this party? They have a candidate for the local elections standing in my ward and I liked the sound of them.

So, I emailed the local party yesterday to ask how they would define a woman. I got this reply:

In answer to your question, the statement below is from our policy document:

WE have brought together the experiences and ideas of people of all genders from across the country – including those doubly or trebly disadvantaged by their gender and other factors such as ethnicity, age, disability, family background, sexuality or religion. We also recognise that the binary words “woman” and “man” do not reflect the gender experience of everyone in our country, and support the right of all to define their sex or gender or to reject gendered divisions as they choose

If you click on the link below, it will take you to the full document which explains our policies and approach to politics

Thank you for taking the time to write to us.

I'm not sure what to make of this. The phrase 'support the right of all to define their sex or gender or to reject gendered divisions' - I think I would agree with this if they had missed out the word 'sex'.

(I've name changed for this by the way because I don't think they have candidates in many areas and don't want to out myself)

Their answer rather suggests they need to change the name of their party (though I'm not sure the new name would fit on the ballot paper).

Latinista · 18/04/2019 22:36

Nope. Don’t think they represent women. Fairly certain I wouldn’t call on them to support me if I needed backup on women’s equality or women’s/girls’ rights agenda topics.

Popchyk · 18/04/2019 22:36

Yep, they need to change their name to the AllGenderParty.

Which gives the rather unfortunate acronym AGP.

Trousering · 18/04/2019 23:09

Yes, they succumbed to the demands of men pretty much on day one. Or maybe it was when Catherine Mayer was in a live stage show with Grayson Perry. Or when the trans members forced out Heather Brunskell-Evens. Whichever one it was, it is the Gender Women Party now.

Antibles · 18/04/2019 23:13

If they think people should have a right to define their sex as they choose, they surely can't comprehend basic biology, which is the basis for the oppression of women. Their approach appeases TRAs at the expense of women. They wouldn't get my vote. If they survive as a party I predict they'll end up wildly overrepresented by candidates with a ladypenis and they won't be able to utter a squeak about it.

HumberElla · 18/04/2019 23:15

The party centring women, and who define women as anyone.

Not much of a USP is it.

MenuPlant · 18/04/2019 23:21

Self define sex?

Wow thats further than plenty of wokesters are prepared to go

Knew they were all, woman is anyone who says they are one but still..

LillithsFamiliar · 18/04/2019 23:21

They don't know what a woman is . . .until they need them for photo calls and then they pop on here and expect everyone to jump at the opportunity.

Ereshkigal · 18/04/2019 23:34

Love the suggestion of the All Gender Party.

There could be an excellent logo.

marshmallowmoon · 18/04/2019 23:34

What a shame. I'm not sure if any of the main parties are much better on this issue, but it seems worse when this is a party which claims to have women's equality as it's defining policy.

Definitely a few too many people with lady-penises in there, calling the shots.

They can't be saved - Sophie was the best hope, and threw the towel in.

OccasionalKite · 19/04/2019 01:32

Too many men calling the shots.

I'd prefer people who recognise the fact of biology and history across the world

OccasionalKite · 19/04/2019 01:47

A Women's Equality Party should focus on women. Not on men.

Alas, that is not the case at the moment.

It has failed in the one thing it aimed to do.

ReSistingPink · 19/04/2019 02:41

Sounds like they are just using the word 'women' or rather, misusing it, as most people do these days.

Personally I wouldn't give them the time of day.

CarolinePooter · 19/04/2019 09:19

I believe the Communist Party rejects self ID. They acknowledge that women are oppressed by virtue of their SEX.

As for the other political parties, words fail me!

Popchyk · 19/04/2019 09:39

UKIP opposes self-ID.

Must not laugh, must not laugh, must not...

LOL.

CarolinePooter · 19/04/2019 10:24

popchyk it won't make me vote UKIP but glad to see them speak up!

sackrifice tsk tsk ;-)

MockerstheFeManist · 19/04/2019 10:26

The 'Agapes'

In the Platonic sense?

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 19/04/2019 11:00

support the right of all to define their sex or gender or to reject gendered divisions as they choose

If everyone can opt in and out of being a women, why do we need the WEP?

The founders know why women need a party to focus on their rights, yet at the first hurdle caved into male people's demands.

This just shows that they are not capable to carryout any of their aims, because at the first sign of resistance the WEP will fold and allow men to dictate the terms.

Their statement makes their party irrelevant.

marshmallowmoon · 19/04/2019 11:04

Oh dear, I don't think I can bring myself to vote ukip Grin

OP posts:
WhereYouLeftIt · 19/04/2019 12:03

I think I'd be responding to that shit email of theirs with

"Right. Got it. Your definition of a woman is 'anything at all'. Thank you for your response, it has lost you my vote.'

Michelleoftheresistance · 19/04/2019 13:11

UKIP opposes self-ID

I am no fan at all of purity politics, but having seen that utter bellend from UKIP last night announce that he'll bloody well joke about rape if he wants to... Angry

We have brought together the experiences and ideas of people of all genders from across the country – including those doubly or trebly disadvantaged by their gender and other factors such as ethnicity, age, disability, family background, sexuality or religion

Seriously. What proportion of the electorate do they really think is going to read that thinking 'oh goody! How great is this!' and what proportion is going to read that thinking either 'I have no idea what they're on about, these people can't even talk plain English', and 'what the actual fuck are you burbling about? Life is too short for this head up the bum rubbish'?

tbfair actually, the people they would expect to go 'oh goodie! Bravo! ' will actually go 'omg according to the rules of 30 seconds ago you said it wrong you evil transphobes, die in a grease fire while we lynch you all over Twitter'. Either way really they're fucked.

frazzled1 · 19/04/2019 19:05

HM Revenue and Customs should gather data through PAYE and Self-Assessment forms on gender, age, ethnicity, disability status, industry and working hours. This should be anonymised and published to allow researchers to develop a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between gender, race, age, disability status and pay.

Load of drivel from the Women-plus-anyone-who-says-they-are-a-woman's Equality Party.

If you can self id your 'gender' (think you mean sex..) WEP then why not self-id your race, age, disability status and pay ? Any stats gathered via self-id won't reflect a true picture of the lives of biological females. Comprehensive understanding my arse.

AlwaysComingHome · 19/04/2019 19:48

It’s like asking a socialist party to define ‘class’ and they dismiss a relationship based on the ownership of the means of production, and propose instead self identification based on whether you play bridge or own a whippet.
