The irony of a male asking a woman to justify why 'cis' is offensive

And then try to mansplain why it can't possibly be

twitter.com/Brandon_Bahret/status/1111744357940510722?s=19

Can a man ever understand why we feel so strongly about being rightly named 'woman'? I don't think they can because they haven't had the same battle for identity that we have.

I actually really struggle to put into words why I dislike cis so much. It's visceral. But us shunning cis and telling people we find it offensive isn't enough apparently.

A male friend of mine recently tried to mansplain that "cis" just meant "not trans". I and two GC friends explained rather heatedly why this was not the case.

Taswama · 29/03/2019 22:44

Like woman just means ‘not man’?

Justhadathought · 29/03/2019 22:46

...because women have already, and still are, fought/fighting long and hard enough not to be just a sub-category of man-kind. You know - where the automatic pronoun is 'he' or 'his'; where the human skeleton used is always a male model; where the language and therefore perception revolves around male examples. A 'lady doctor'; a 'female artist', and so on......Women will no longer meekly accept being a mere adjunct of a male determination, or category. Women have integrity in and as themselves.

Prequelle · 29/03/2019 22:46

They only insist on it so much because they want the term women to be a free for all yet still want to other us and differentiate us.

I haven't been as infuriated in a long time as I have with the man in these tweets.

Just another twit twittering. For instance

'The term "cis" refers to a descriptive quality of an individual, not a subjective quality. Terms like "men/women" refer to a subjetive quality of an individual, not a descriptive quality.'

Nope. 'Men/women are objective properties determined by the individual's sex. Cis is a redundant term.

TurboTeddy · 29/03/2019 22:52

Best me to it Errol.

Does Brandon know the internet is forever, Muppet.

DarkAtEndOfTunnel · 29/03/2019 23:08

Because use of 'cis' makes us a subset of our own sex - or gender as they prefer? And naturally, the much less important, less stunning and less brave, one, who therefore should shut up about their petty little issues in the face of the biologically male. Because it enables men to define women however they want.

nettie434 · 29/03/2019 23:09

I am not really a fan of Julia Hartley Brewer but I keep this little video to calm me when I hear a man saying women should not mind being called 'cis'. It was quite poular on MN when it was broadcast:

andyoldlabour · 29/03/2019 23:22

Brandon is a complete and utter f*ckwit - end of.

teawamutu · 29/03/2019 23:27

What a twat.

Ereshkigal · 29/03/2019 23:28

I just watched Julia's video again, thanks for the link, it cheered me up!

FermatsTheorem · 29/03/2019 23:37

I fucking love that clip, always puts a smile on my face.

BettyFloop · 29/03/2019 23:42

Me too

Ereshkigal · 29/03/2019 23:47

That woke comedian guy, so baffled by her vehemence and clearly wanted to tell her she wasn't allowed to say that "trans women" and women weren't the same thing.

FermatsTheorem · 29/03/2019 23:55

That's the thing that makes it so joyous the bafflement: "but, but, but... I'm the one with the testicles of objectivity... What do you mean, this is your space and you're in charge... Women can't be in charge, they're just meant to be there as an adoring audience... What, you're threatening to throw me out.. you can't do that... Splutter.. testicles of objectivity... Splutter... Oh, you can throw me out... Does not compute... Does not compute... Does not compute..."

Kaboom. Misogynist bot explodes in confuzzlement.

jellyfrizz · 30/03/2019 07:48

Are people with no gender identity cis or trans?

Doyoumind · 30/03/2019 07:51

They are trans jelly, according to Stonewall.

BillywilliamV · 30/03/2019 07:56

Are biological men ever referred to by anyone as cis- men? Is that a thing?

Love the video btw, thanks for letting me see that

PrinceOfPies · 30/03/2019 08:04

Why do they think that "not trans" would be in any way less offensive than "on the side of your birth gender "

It's only ever used for women, so again, its women being defined by their "not men" status.

Oi brendan, you twat.

Black people aren't "not white"

Gay people aren't "not straight"
Men arent "non women"

Atheist aren't "non christians"
We don't define things by what they are not.

You can call me heterosexual because I am attracted to people of thr opposite sex

You can call me a woman because I am

I have no feelings of gender so you cannot call me cis. And I most certainly will never be "not trans"

Micaela64 · 30/03/2019 08:29

It's not really just a male female issue. Do you think men want to be called cis?? It's a horrible word, it sounds like sissy!

RedToothBrush · 30/03/2019 08:34

Cis means 2nd class person who is lower in status to biological males.

This is why cis is not used to describe men.

That's why Rachel McKinnons rant was "you are terfs, you are transphobes, you are cis"

They were asserting their superiority and making a point that woman were not equal. Women who say they are allies and are happy to call themselves cis should take note of McKinnons revealing outburst.

PrinceOfPies · 30/03/2019 08:36

Men are rarely called cis as the debate is always about women giving up our space.

Just like men dont get called " prostate havers. "

Hence a few woke bros happy to use the word when giving women a good drsssing down. They know they wont actually be expected to take it

Ereshkigal · 30/03/2019 08:36

They were asserting their superiority and making a point that woman were not equal. Women who say they are allies and are happy to call themselves cis should take note of McKinnons revealing outburst.

Absolutely, Red.

RedToothBrush · 30/03/2019 08:52

Ereshkigal, that's why the accusation of cheat hurts most. McKinnon believes that asserting their dominance is legitimate. That's it pure and simple. They think they are a better class of person who is superior and should be rewarded for and is entitled to their superiority.

Cheat cuts through that most.
