andyoldlabour
The 'articulate middle class' aspect of the abuser & murderer was a key issue.
Not an uncommon one.

Elsi deeserved so much better.

zanahoria · 28/03/2019 16:38

His twitter page bears the legend

Make Sport Everyone's Game

Perhaps that should be

Make Women's Sport Everyone's game

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 28/03/2019 17:02

Joss Prior, since you’re stalking and analysing us you creep, I have the same attitude regarding surrogacy no matter if it’s a gay or hetero couple wanting to rent a poor woman’s womb. Intentionally creating a baby that will be taken from its mother and paying to rent the womb, is wrong no matter who does it.

WeRiseUp · 28/03/2019 17:14

Intentionally creating a baby that will be taken from its mother and paying to rent the womb, is wrong no matter who does it.

And ftr Prior thinking surrogacy is a bad thing is not new to feminism - eg- A Handmaid's Tale published 1985.

WeRiseUp · 28/03/2019 17:16

Or maybe

Make Women's Sport Everyone's game except women's.

Iused2BanOptimist · 28/03/2019 17:22

Yes Joss. Ftr I am implacably opposed to surrogacy, don't care if it's het, gay, trans, best friends or sisters.
I have personally been involved with two mothers who died in childbirth, I have known some have horrendous birth injuries and life threatening post natal psychosis. Childbirth isn't always a positive event.
No one should ask another woman to take those risks for them.

littlbrowndog · 28/03/2019 17:24

Prior can’t keep up with us

Cry me a river prior

welshgendercrit · 28/03/2019 17:36

As far as the comments on the Times article are concerned, the moderators seem to be happy to leave highly critical comments in place as long as they aren't abusive. Alex is being handed his arse on a plate there too. Grin

I have a feeling The Times has actively decided to take a gender critical stance, which is why I'm going to keep on subscribing, even though they've discontinued my cheap basic digital sub and I'll be paying twice as much a month from April. Hey-ho...

Haworthia · 28/03/2019 17:47

I wonder if there is a hesitance for social services and medical professionals to see the red flags was because of the sexist idea that men are heros and amazing parents for simply changing a nappy or doing anything else taken for granted as 'women's work'.

That is a very VERY good point @WeRiseUp

I remember this case from when it was first in the news but somehow had forgotten that Elsie was dead within TWO WEEKS of being adopted.

“Scully-Hicks, who was married to husband Craig, was visited 15 times by at least three social workers and he made numerous visits to the GP and A&E when he injured Elsie - but there was 'no concern' about his parenting.”

No concern about his parenting even though the baby had only been in his care for a matter of days. Because a man willing to take on the grunt work of being a stay at home parent couldn’t be anything other than a hero.

And going back to the issue of relaxing surrogacy laws, I can’t help but wonder whether embryo sex selection will on the table as well. Because it’s interesting how many high profile gay men who have used surrogates abroad have only had boys.

Needmoresleep · 28/03/2019 17:48

I assume they want to provide balance in their reporting but struggled to find someone on their staff willing to go against heavyweights like Janice Turner, Andrew Gilligan etc. Except the Sports Editor.

Is there any data around the column inches The Times devotes to men's as opposed to women's sport. Given his attitude to some of our sporting greats, who deliver all that senior sports people are supposed to do in terms of role models., I assume he is not a driving force in redressing the balance.

And interesting to see how he feels when his children are a bit older, assuming they are girls. Perhaps, say, one is a really talented swimmer, but can't progress to the regional talent scheme because there are two 14 years with male physiques who swim faster butterfly. Or another is keen on sport till puberty and then gets really body conscious and does not want to share a gender neutral changing room. Or they discover the school report is in a boys name, and packets containing internet-bought hormones are found in the child's bedroom. Parents were not told because the child said they were "homophobic". The joys of parenting. Perhaps then he will know why mumsnet cares about sport and safeguarding.

Cismyfatarse1 · 28/03/2019 18:15

I posted on the comments a list of the articles on Sport today. Dozens on football, rugby but only one on women's sport and one offering women's sport to men.

Cloven · 28/03/2019 18:25

Do you think gay men are so keen to promote the idea that TWAW because they know they'll never be expected to have sex with them?

I do kind of understand the affinity between gay men and male-attracted, old-school transsexuals. But why would a gay guy feel any affinity at all for present-day TRAs? Just bound together by mutual misogyny? It's not only that this man has no right to give away women's sports - it's also that he has no business to do so. What on earth makes him feel entitled to get involved in this conversation?

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 28/03/2019 18:42

Just bound together by mutual misogyny?

This. It's possible to spend hours looking for different motivations, but it comes down the misogyny.

Justhadathought · 28/03/2019 19:00

This. It's possible to spend hours looking for different motivations, but it comes down the misogyny.

...which, of course, amounts to disrespect, and even revulsion, for actual women. Isn't that what drag is all about? Even though most gay men will tell you differently.......It is certainly what I see.

DpWm · 28/03/2019 19:07

Well yes,
This example is yet another gay man who knows exactly what a man is when it comes to their sexual preferences, and exactly what a woman is when it comes to womb renting, but somehow... suddenly when it comes to things that are important to women involving their rights and boundaries (like sports etc) they have an entirely new and different perspective, that remarkably results in a benefit to the male sex, only.
Funny that.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 28/03/2019 19:25

Wow! The comments under that article are so to the point!

It's chilling to see writ large the misogyny and casual racism of a gay male who so willingly buys a woman's body for his own wishes.

XXcstatic · 28/03/2019 19:47

The article is awful, but the comments are Star

Fazackerley · 28/03/2019 19:50

I thinks been taken down and replaced with one about women's football.

terfsandwich · 28/03/2019 19:56

Or you could let people quietly go about their lives and acknowledge that they have been through hell compared to you

So he is trying to turn the Olympics into the Oppression Olympics? Gold for the highest on the intersectional pecking order. White male heterosexuals to the front of the line please!

terfsandwich · 28/03/2019 20:03

Cismyfatarse your comment should get a gold medal. I love it.

I'm getting an ad for men's sport on this page now. At least it's not the gay cruise again.

ThePurportedDoctoress · 28/03/2019 20:06

I can only assume that Alex got the Stonewall funding he was begging for, in exchange for writing pro-TRA sports pieces.
Enjoy the dosh, Alex. Hope it's worth it.

zanahoria · 28/03/2019 20:08

Alex's article had a 'science' tag, shouldn't that have been 'bullshit'?

Lamaha · 28/03/2019 20:50

How disappointing that the times hasn't opened this article for comments.
although it's cowardly that they didn't allow comments (probably a stipulation by the author).
There are now lots of comments, all GC except for one guy called Matt who keeps commenting that women's sport is anyway rubbish so who cares! But otherwise. brilliant comments.

Lamaha · 28/03/2019 21:13

I suspect this article, or rather the comments, will peak trans a whole new horde of readers! Grin

I'm a subscriber. I called them up to cancel my subscription and they offered me half price, which I accepted. Just tell them the reason you're cancelling is financial.

GrubbyHipsterBeard · 28/03/2019 21:24

Anyone else think that this sounds a little bit like he at best doesn’t give a shit about the threats of violence women receive over this and at worst he thinks they’ve brought it on themselves?
