She's from Devon, the only place she could be in charge of her own show, not on Grockle Radio Wilts.

thewitchofwentworth · 14/03/2019 12:55

Prior to the Rio Olympics there was talk of two British trans athletes who would be competing. Was this fake news? There was never any names in the news articles and I was never able to find out who they were either.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 14/03/2019 13:00

Also blocked. Seems I have the wrong friends. Am I bovvered?

Go Sharron.

The two athletes from the Mail report were not named (if in fact they existed), because the advisor to British Olympic Association (a transwoman - Delia Johnston) said that they could not comment. Delia Johnston also said "they transitioned long ago and have competed at a European championship for this country"

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3671937/Transgender-British-athletes-born-men-set-make-Olympic-history-competing-games-women.html

MillytantForceit · 14/03/2019 13:14

A European Chamionships in what sport?

Certainly not Athletics or Swimming.

(Maybe boxing?)

VickyEadie · 14/03/2019 13:15

The constant use of the Olympics - as in "No transwoman has ever been selected, let alone won a medal so that proves it's fair" - as the crux of the argument is sly and disingenuous.

  1. TW incursion into women's sports is starting at school level - beating and pushing out girls from their own events. Boys identifying as girls as not required to have any medication, etc - merely to declare themselves girls.
  2. This continues to club level. TW are not required to have any treatment, etc - so displace girls and women from places in teams, events, etc.
  3. There is only a requirement for treatment at elite level - and by then the damage to girls' and women's progression in sports is already done.

This argument needs to be put whenever McKinnon et al do the 'But in the Olympics...' argument - because it deflects from the most important issues about girls' and women's participation.

Thanks Janie.

Meanwhile, I've had a post deleted. Not impressed.

There is a great podcast on Feminist Current where MM interviews Linda Blade, President of Athletics Alberta. They discuss the IOC and Linds explains the timelines, including explaining that because the IOC rules required (effectively 1 yr RLT) there wasn’t really time for any trans athletes to compete at the last summer games.
Linda Blade is nails. For a Canadian to stand up and completely disagree with the trans sports policy is amazing.
(There were a few points in the interview where they were a bit blah, but generally an interesting listen).

Mamaryllis · 14/03/2019 13:29

Yeah someone in mnhq is combing FWR again. We still aren’t allowed to state facts about people in the public eye. Even if the facts are freely available in articles they wrote themselves.
To be fair, I get it. The truth is literally lolsuit fodder in certain circles.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/03/2019 13:36

No trans atheltes in the Olympics since the updated rules in 2015... remind me of the dates agan

2012 - nope!
2016 - not wth less than a year to gear up for it
2020 - will be an interesting, possibly devastating, Olympics for women

But still doesn't excuse using 0 trans athletes as any sort of 'proof'. Wait til 2021 and lets see that again....

My deleted post even said I wasn't being controversial on Twitter - but apparently too controversial for Mumsnet .

In other news, my 12 year old is currently reading 1984. She should be reading 1984 to really prepare her for this ridiculous world.

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 14/03/2019 14:04

Is BBC Wiltshire the Fox News of the UK?

Grin

Ha ha ha ha, they aren't half thick

Exactly. If talented girls can’t win in their sport at school and club level, they will never make it onto the performance pathway. These pathways are designed to produce athletes who can win at European and international level, that’s the route for most elite athletes.

If that’s blocked to girls, then that’s it. Womens competitive sport will be destroyed.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/03/2019 14:24

All of which is odd as all contact sports, and many others, have a cut off age, when they separate by sex, not gender or feelz... at the moment. There is a perfectly common sense reason for this....

Many were signatories to a recent letter... hearteningly!

andyoldlabour · 14/03/2019 14:59

If they competed in rowing it would be ridiculous.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_world_records_in_rowing#Men

In volleyball the net is lower for women, in javelin the spear is much lighter, as are the shot, hammer and discus.
If a big transwoman with a good throwing arm gets hold of the javelin, then they had better clear the seats at the far side of the stadium Shock.
The ball used in women's cricket weighs around 5 ounces whilst the men's is around 5.6 ounces. A large transwoman would achieve more accuracy and a higher speed using the women's ball, and thus be far more dangerous.

frankexchangeofviews · 14/03/2019 15:08

‘Why is the BBC still asking McKinnon to participate?’

Quite - how on earth is that person still being sought out for a media appearances after what said person tweeted about cervical smears.

TowelNumber42 · 14/03/2019 15:20

Remember RMK is the peaktrans sherpa so more airtime is good.

ChiaraRimini · 14/03/2019 15:28

BBC always want to have both sides of the argument represented where possible to show "balance" even when one side is bat shit crazy, it seems

waves to McKinnon

MillytantForceit · 14/03/2019 15:45

‘Why is the BBC still asking McKinnon to participate?’

It is more than reminiscent of the years when Anjum Choudrey would be wheeled on as a spokesperson for British Muslims.

Mamaryllis · 15/03/2019 14:16

I love it when McK tries to play whack a mole. It must be truly stressful to have to try and stop the entire world from telling it like it is, particularly when you’ve blocked half of it Grin
