Has anyone heard about this?

Apparently there are some Comic Book Guys who are really upset that Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson) has been made the most powerful superhero in the universe whereas in the comic books she is a bit minor and weak (I hadn't heard of her before).

Something like that anyway.

Brie is basically saying 'get over it, losers' www.theguardian.com/film/2019/feb/21/captain-marvel-why-sexist-attempts-at-sabotage-will-fail

Like the female Ghostbusters reboot it's being downvoted on movie sites by butthurt men

Don't know what comic these people have been reading ,but the men i grew up with were thrilled she was getting a film , because in their words she was the ultimate avenger and basically a god compared to the others .

yestheyhavethesamedad · 04/03/2019 14:13

To be fair i hadnt heard of her grew up loving hulk and thor ect but didnt know about her , which as a woman who loves marvel and dc ect is really sad .

Doyoumind · 04/03/2019 14:13

She also said too many film critics were white males i.e. more diversity was needed, and then has been called racist and sexist by a certain type of man 🙄

MillytantForceit · 04/03/2019 14:14

Girlie Captain Marvel?

QuietContraryMary · 04/03/2019 14:21

I must apologise for lack of knowledge about comics so I may have got aspects of my OP wrong.

My 11 yr old DD loves the Marvel films. Good strong female characters in them. She can’t wait to see this, nor can my 13yr old Marvel crazy DS. I think it’s great and wish Id had something similar growing up. Women in films back then were either love interest, comic effect, to supply tragedy (killed off early with the black guy, or dog) ,be saintly and sacrificial, or too sexy and therefore killed as they deserved.

AssassinatedBeauty · 04/03/2019 15:07

I wonder if this was influenced by the success of the Wonder Woman film, or whether it was already in the pipeline?

yestheyhavethesamedad · 04/03/2019 15:10

Assassinated beauty as far as i know its been in the pipeline for years they are slowly trying to bring in the next stage of films as the original avengers contracts end ,in the next year or so they are also making a black widow film .

FloralBuntingIsObnoxious · 04/03/2019 15:20

Marvel Universe mad in this house. Tremendously excited about this. But yeah, some comic fans are pretty much in the same demographic as certain gamers - I hesitate to say incel, but, yeah, fuck it, they're incels.

Thorphin · 04/03/2019 15:36

Most MCU fans don't care, there is very little buzz about the film considering the costs of promotion and Disney are trying to create a narrative about trolls ruining the film to blame. The only slight criticism i have seen is that the film is presented as feminist but brie larson uses a bottom double.

Apparently Avengers End Game has two versions and the one used will depend on how CM does. Resolving a decade long story arc with a deus ex machina is pretty lazy though.

QuietContraryMary · 04/03/2019 16:30

AFAICT the butt double is for Avengers 4 not Captain Marvel

White, male Marvel geek aka my husband is really pleased with the concept and excited to see it next week. And he refused to see one of the Spiderman movies on principle so he would Dec call veto if it was a ridiculous stretch.
I'm thrilled DS will grow up with strong female role models

Thorphin · 04/03/2019 19:20

Could be for both? the green suit she wears on set has only been seen in CM so far, she is wearing red in AEG image leaks.

nbartist · 04/03/2019 19:36

Thankfully all the guys are know are just as excited about Captain Marvel as I am, but I run in fairly liberal circles and I am aware that the comic book fan community has a huge problem with gatekeeping. This means that because a lot of women weren't raised reading comics, it can be incredibly hard to break through the barrier of people shouting about how you can only really claim to like comics if you've read and retain in-depth knowledge of the entire history of Marvel and DC.

I think this is a significant part of why you see a lot more male backlash online than you do praise for things like Captain Marvel; the misogyny is expressed through being hyper-critical of every divergence from the original canon. I don't recall half as many people complaining about changes they've made to other characters throughout the cinematic universe, and in fact the revamping of characters such as Loki has really changed his dynamic in recent comics and made his series a far more compelling read. I hope to see the same amount of praise post-release as there was for Wonder Woman, a film I really enjoyed despite an ambivalence towards the rest of the DC films.

GoldenWonderwall · 04/03/2019 20:52

Hmmm. If people will sit through Iron Man 2 and 3 and Thor 2 but won’t entertain Captain Marvel it’s nowt to do with the quality of the storyline or the acting! Some men can’t hack it when women aren’t the side kicks. Any flaws in the film will be put down to fans not wanting a female lead rather than it simply being a flawed piece of work as they all are.

I can’t be arsed with whiny arse American men whinging about comic books and films from their childhood. I liked the Last Jedi and thought female Ghostbusters was great. I’m looking forward to Captain Marvel and hope that we see lots more main female characters in giant space opera blockbusters.

boatyardblues · 04/03/2019 20:55

Isn’t there hard data that female-led films make more money?

AgnesNaismith · 04/03/2019 20:56

I just came to post this brilliant picture from the London premiere...

comic books she is a bit minor and weak

If they think that^ then they haven’t read the comics much, she’s super fucking important and not weak, wtf those people on? They literally must not have read the comicsConfused

nbartist · 04/03/2019 21:06

(Also just wanted to pop back in and say I also loved the all-female Ghostbusters. Masterpiece of cinema? Maybe not. Hell of a lot of fun and an all-round entertaining film? Absolutely.)

SushiGo · 04/03/2019 21:07

I know very little about comics also, but seeing this soon with my very excited geek-DH.

DD also read the comics this week and is keen to see it.

There is so much misogyny in geek culture. Its really shit and depressing. I agree there is a lot of incel and gatekeeping about certain parts of it.

SushiGo · 04/03/2019 21:08

I really liked the all female ghostbusters! It was fun. As was the original. Full marks from me.

FloralBuntingIsObnoxious · 04/03/2019 21:15

I'm buzzing about this film, genuinely excited. And yes, some of the male led Marvel films have been stinkers that I've only sat through to complete the big picture story arcs. Still better than owt DC put out though.

The new Ghostbusters was painful shite, but it wasn't because it was a female cast.

Mind you, I agree with the pp about any flaws bring lazily put down to the female lead. I feel the same about Doctor Who, tbh. I think it's by far as crap as it's been for decades, but I think that's down to inconsistent, incompetent and uneven writing and production, not whether Whitaker is a man or a woman.
