I didn't realise Miranda Yardley was in court today over alleged transphobic harrasment.

Debbie Hayton
@DebbieHayton
At Basildon Magistrates Court where Miranda Yardley is on trial for transphobic Harassment. The prosecution applied for reporting restrictions to prevent the complainant Helen Islan from being named. The judge has not granted them. So Helen Islan can be named.

Sending Miranda good luck vibes.

The amount of abuse women receive on social media and yet it's rarely taken seriously. I'd love to know how/why these vexatious cases are being pursued.

CadburysTastesVileNow · 01/03/2019 16:58

Miranda wont get all the costs back.

Whatisthisfuckery · 01/03/2019 16:58

Case thrown out without Miranda having to give any evidence.

Like I always say, you don’t need to argue with a TRA, just go 👉🏼 and they’ll self destruct for you.

KnitFastDieWarm · 01/03/2019 16:58

Well done Miranda, time for a well-earned drink or three I think! Gin

SophoclesTheFox · 01/03/2019 17:01

Here’s an idea for a change of tactic: instead of failing to get charges of malicious comms, harassment, hate crime etc, to stick, which are clearly really tricky, maybe activists need to work on getting Being A Great Big Meany Poopy Head, Having Opinions That I Don’t Like, and Being The Wrong Sort Of Feminist onto the statue books? I think that might work out better for them.

Stephanie Davies-Arai mentioned in Miranda Yardley trial for Islan’s treatment of her on socmed. Again, Islan’s response: I may be vocal and have strong opinions in which case people are free to report me but it doesn’t warrant harassment. Judge found no evidence of harassment.

Moonie reported? Gloves are off then, pull up a chair. His style is quite... refreshing.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/03/2019 17:03

Apologies, I misspoke before, reported to Labour, not the HoL.

HamiltonCork · 01/03/2019 17:03

Well done Miranda Flowers. Sounds like a horrific ordeal

Helen has made a complete and utter arse of herself.

FyiYolo · 01/03/2019 17:11

Helens Twitter has gone 'protected'.

nauticant · 01/03/2019 17:12

I guess a transcript won't be available. But is it the case that a party to the case can request a transcript if there is a recording and if they pay for the transcript to be made?

Melroses · 01/03/2019 17:12

Debbie Hayton has released some screenshots of the tweets that Helen Islan put out, that were presumably going to be used for the defence.

She really can't take what she dishes out - to continue the schoolyard theme Hmm

Bittermints · 01/03/2019 17:13

Bittermints i think you are not seeing things from SH's perspective, which is that SH is always right and everything else is secondary to that.

Yes, silly old me! I'd forgotten that. Interesting, though, that in that screenshot above where another TRA is hysterically screeching what will it take, will one of us have to get killed before we're taken seriously (Hmm remind me again which set of activists have form for threatening and carrying out violence?) SH is the one being relatively sensible and pointing out that there has to be evidence.

Sounds like Islan knew she was being a liability, apparently she was "actively distancing herself from Mermaids" (Sonia Poulton, Twitter)

happydappy2 · 01/03/2019 17:15

Is terrible that MY had this hanging over them for almost an entire year-disgusting abuse of the courts system that it was deemed relevant to bring to court.

Bittermints · 01/03/2019 17:17

Anyone surprised that HI's tweets are now protected? What a loss to Twitter that is.

Hamster00 · 01/03/2019 17:18

Congratulations Miranda! Common sense prevailed Gin

Popchyk · 01/03/2019 17:18

And even if there was an initial mistake when the CPS decided to go ahead, they had plenty times to correct this.

Miranda was in court 3 times.

The CPS chose to go ahead on several occasions.

We need to hold the CPS accountable for this.

Itsallgoingtobefine I really don't think he will care. Also it is probably not a good look for Labour to be expelling people for alleged transphobia when there are so many delays in investigating claims of anti semitism

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/03/2019 17:20

I have mentally composed my own summing up (I am now a circuit judge these days) for this case on my way home today.

Much finger wagging and chastising nasty little tattle tails who need to get their heads out of the clouds and look at reality (no matter how painful it may be). And to stop being a stinky lying bully.

I’d be so good at this judgey stuff.

EweSurname · 01/03/2019 17:24

Sonia Poulton
@SoniaPoulton
Helen Islan was cross examined for two hours. She actively sought to distance herself from Mermaids and she was accused of 'contributing to making this debate toxic,'.

Helen Islan denied that there is a 'trans lobby' and was accused of giving the court 'a false impression that there isn't an agenda'.

Helen Islan had sought to have her identity hidden and had suggested that she may not give evidence if reporting restrictions were denied. She was accused of attempting to blackmail and manipulate the court.

Flowers for Miranda.

And hooray for the judge and his display of common sense.

And seconding (thirding? tenthing?) the "What the hell are the CPS playing at? They no-crime most rape cases yet have time and money to attempt to prosecute this sort of nonsense accusation."

lottiebel123 · 01/03/2019 17:25

so if Miranda doesn't get her costs back, how much will she have to pay? This makes my blood boil. Why the hell should she have to pay costs for this sorry waste of court time initiated by someone else??!

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 01/03/2019 17:26

point of order: do we know the judge was a man or are we assuming it?

LizzieSiddal · 01/03/2019 17:27

Thanks to whoever posted Miranda’s YouTube piece!

I can’t imagine something like that hanging over me for 10 months, must have been dreadful.
