Brief interview. Tucker less obnoxious than usual, Julia clear and direct. Brava! I admire her ability to finish a sentence decisively.

Their conversation may seem elementary to UK viewers, but please remember the media situation here is completely different. US media have given gender critical views next to no airing so far. This is an important beginning.

Julia is the Baltimore lesbian activist who appeared on the panel (The Inequality of the Equality Act: Concerns from the Left) at Heritage during the Women Stand Up week in Washington. The speakers on that panel (and certain audience members!) have taken a lot of flak for being there, but the fact is that their appearance there has generated more media coverage than any other action the past several years so far as I'm aware. And it's still going.

Contrast this with the NYT's hit piece the other day, with no right of reply offered the women targeted.

I'm sure blinkered minds will be having coniptions about this even happening, but I think that was exceptionally clear and good.

itwaseverthus · 13/02/2019 11:39

A good interview. Shame it's only, again, the Right airing this.

It’s going to be a lot harder for the other channels to continue to avoid talking about this now.
Tucker Carlson has a huge profile and worked at both CNN and MSNBC in the past - quite weird to see him being so gentle with a left wing feminist.

I’m hoping the late night show writers and hosts will be forced to start properly looking into it - Bill Maher knows the TRagenda is problematic for women and girls (he refers to biological females as ‘Women: Classic’ in a recent stand up) but only ever gently prods at it.

Something is definitely moving now, at least - feels like the US media is where we were a year ago.

BettyDuMonde · 13/02/2019 12:03

Was pleased to see Megan Murphy’s twitter lawsuit covered in the Wall Street Journal (haven’t read the article due to the paywall).

dragoning · 13/02/2019 12:10

I know nothing about her, but wow, she is very, very clear. Good job.

CallMeWoman · 13/02/2019 12:25

It was excellent. So, so pleased to see this shift in discussion in America.

Arkengarthdale · 13/02/2019 12:36

Liked the emphasis on 'predatory men'. She didn't mention the word 'trans' at all, just 't' when talking about the acronym LGBT.

This is what it's all about, predatory men.

SisterWendyBuckett · 13/02/2019 13:19

Only recently found out about Julia Beck and am so impressed with her clarity, and ability to speak the truth.

deepwatersolo · 13/02/2019 13:38

Good interview.

Tucker Carlson has had several sane moments in recent past, including one rant about the economy that sounded outright leftist, and an interviews with Glenn Greenwald about how mainstream media suppress anti-war discourse, e.g. as espoused by Tusli Gabbard.

I can't say whether Tucker has indeed white supremacist impulses as some claim or whether it is a smear (I don't really follow him), but the mentioned interactions sounded remarkably sane.

Good interview. Tucker asked good concise questions and Julia answered them well. They covered a lot of ground, in a calm manner. I hope a lot of ordinary people watching were relieved to hear views they share, being expressed.

GrinitchSpinach · 13/02/2019 15:47

Betty
quite weird to see him being so gentle with a left wing feminist. I agree! Good for him.

I was quite interested in his take that sexual politics are usually "not worth getting into" but that self-ID concerns him because he has daughters. In other words as a man, especially a straight white one, he usually has the privilege of not worrying about what's happening to other classes of people, but as a father of daughters he feels he has a stake in the debate. Points a way forward to opening conversations with other men?

Also: Something is definitely moving now, at least - feels like the US media is where we were a year ago. I think you may be right; I hope so!

I think Julia's great. Here is a piece she wrote about being kicked off the Baltimore mayor's LGBTQ Commission: www.afterellen.com/general-news/568221-how-i-became-the-most-hated-lesbian-in-baltimore

and I attach her wonderfully defiant Twitter header:

I’m similar to Tucker on this though not with everything he says. Also the I believe in the truth starter resonates for me. I get really bothered about this stuff even when as a man I’m not impacted a huge amount personally. I’m currently childless too but may go on to have a daughter and also have several female friends I care about. But it’s the logic I suppose which winds me up the most and also the hypocrisy of the so called progressive left who usually like to take the moral high ground. I’m not a far right or alt righter either but at least most people take the view that they’re the bad guys. I’m getting more right than I want to be as I get older but the virtue signalling hand maidens / apologists are pushing me there. Not just feminist issues but others too where special groups get a free pass for intolerance from smug people who make a career out of campaigning against intolerance. Almost prefer the Nazi or Isis types as at least they’re honest and open about it

OvaHere · 13/02/2019 19:54

That was a surprisingly good interview. She was able to get some concise points across.

US activism is going to be one to watch in the next couple of years. It feels like the door has cracked open a little now and I think it will ramp up leading to the 2020 election as individual politicians are going to be questioned on their stance.

VeniceAllan · 13/02/2019 20:05

I ❤️ Julia beck so much. Still haven't watched this yet but v much looking forward to it.

Caucho · 13/02/2019 21:33

Unfortunately it’s only the right who can say anything. Any roll back of previous unintended misdiscretions means you love Donald Trump. Cortez is the future and people just need to get over it apparently. She’d rather share a bathroom than a trans women than high powered executive man (presumably Weinstein) but can’t remember anyone ever campaigning for Harvey to have access to the ladies bogs so bit of a straw man. Can we not have someone in between Trump and Cortez or Jacob Rees Mogg and St Jeremy FFS?

Caucho · 13/02/2019 21:41

Its kind of why the left is fucked. If they row back they’ll be subject to some Twitter or protest onslaught so they’re stuck with the loons where as the right don’t have to worry so much. I’ve said previously I doubt most Labour MPs genuinely believe what they’re now forced to support. Doubt Corbyn would consider a trans woman a real woman if he had to shag them. Owen Jones finds women’s bits disgusting allegedly but now has to treat Trans Men as men (at least publicly).

MargueritaPink · 13/02/2019 21:44

It's not the first time. I can't find it but there was a very good interview with a radical feminist maybe a couple of years ago when Hands Across the Aisle started up. He listened and was very respectful.

As Caucho says Carlson's take on this is rooted in logic and the fact words have meanings which you can't just reinvent.

Ereshkigal · 13/02/2019 21:49

Yes Marguerita I was racking my brains trying to think of who it was, but I know exactly the interview you mean. Really compelling.

MargueritaPink · 13/02/2019 22:56

Found it. There was also a hilarious interview with a woke- bloke who looked like a boiled egg where Carlson was utterly incredulous at the redefining of words.

MargueritaPink · 13/02/2019 23:10

The interview with male SJW is on here about 2:15 Carlson defeats him completely.

Ereshkigal · 13/02/2019 23:24

Oh yes I've seen that one too. Enjoyed watching the guy flailing around again.

"Matter of settled science" Grin mind you I bet he could find some dodgy biologist.

OvaHere · 13/02/2019 23:31

That guy was ridiculous. 'There are no examples in sports and prisons'

Oh really...

I suppose to be fair US prisons afaik are still wholly sex segregated. Probably only a matter of time though.
