'Women Trans* Femme Workshop

Anyone able to make any head or tail out of this?

bicas.org/women-trans-femme/

"Women Trans Femme (WTF) hours are open to anyone who identifies as female, transgender, femme, genderqueer, trans-masculine, trans-feminine, or feels that their socialization or treatment as a woman, transperson, &/or femme has impeded their participation in bicycle mechanics."

"This space is for:
Women: A person who identifies as a woman.

Trans* People: Transgender, genderqueer, gender non-conforming, gender creative, anyone whose gender identity is fluid, transgressive, and/or transitioning.

Femme: A person of any gender who embodies a “feminine” appearance, expression, or identity, including those who identify as femmes, fairies, sissies, mariposas, mariquitas, or any expression which counters or challenges “traditional” masculinity."

They add

"If you are not WTF identified, BECOME AN ALLY:"

I very much like the idea of WTF-identified. As 'WTF was that shit I just read?'

Is it just me who finds the whole thing a bit confusing, as in - is 'WTF' different in terms of who it is targeting from 'W'? If there are 10,000 bike mechanics in America, and only 100 of them are women, and then say, 300,000 blokes who repair their own bikes, and 3,000 women, or whatever it is, then isn't 'W' the priority. I mean you don't have to exclude T, from a W bike mechanic workshop, it just seems a bit odd saying 'WTF'.

After all the average (male) bike mechanic probably has longer hair so is a bit 'F' anyway?

WTF indeed.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 12/02/2019 15:35

Indeed!

butteryellow · 12/02/2019 15:36

Pretty sure that's just them trying to avoid saying 'non-men'

fairies

Well, being an imaginary character probably does put a bit of a crimp on your hobbies I suspect. plus your wings might get caught in the chain.

DO NOT GRAB THE SPANNERS

Shock
Datun · 12/02/2019 15:42

Two of those things are butterflies and ladybirds.

So they are inviting you to become an ally to a motorbike maintaining ladybird?

Ok!

Redshoeblueshoe · 12/02/2019 15:45

WTF

GahWhatever · 12/02/2019 15:46

It's a bit OTT woke but basically they have set up a training workshop for anyone female or feminine who might be intimidated or put off going to a largely male workshop.
I'm not really seeing an issue.
It's a kind thing to do.

JellySlice · 12/02/2019 15:46

They're playing Wokeword Bingo.

It's not possible for the organisers to write an ad that makes any sense because they've bought into the ideology - and none of this ideology makes any sense.

So they've reeled off a list of nonsense words in the hope that they hit enough to signal how woke, open-minded, stunning and brave they are.

Bingo!

MillytantForceit · 12/02/2019 15:48

Can the bicycles identify as scooters?

Datun · 12/02/2019 15:49

Well that's it, isn't it? Presenting as feminine can, simultaneously, mean you are a bigoted, aggressive, violent thug.

LuggsaysNotaWomen · 12/02/2019 15:57

Well I changed my car tyre yesterday with nowt but my smarts and shitty Jack that was impossible to work. I identify as a Daddy Long Legs. Where was my fucking workshop?!

nauticant · 12/02/2019 16:05

'Women Trans* Femme Workshop = WTF Wokeshop

Yes, that sounds about right.

LangCleg · 12/02/2019 16:12

WTF Wokeshop

I am going to die laughing.

I can't even make a bad taste joke because my eyes are full of tears and I can barely see to type.

JellySlice · 12/02/2019 16:18

I am.

anyone who identifies as female, - probably male. Women do not 'identify as' female, we simply are female.
transgender, - male or wannabe male.
trans-masculine, - wannabe male
trans-feminine - male

Looks like the workshop is going to be 'largely male' in any case.

It's a kind thing to do.
Oh yes, female socialisation.

QuietContraryMary · 12/02/2019 16:18

Apparently mariposa and mariquita are Spanish slurs.

www.reddit.com/r/Spanish/comments/3abc4g/how_do_i_call_myself_gay_in_spanish/

Though possibly some people have 'reclaimed' them.

Can you imagine if they ran workshops for 'people of color, including those who identify as '

You know, just in case you didn't realise you didn't feel included enough by the 'people of color' bit.

Humans are doomed.

QuietContraryMary · 12/02/2019 16:24

JellySlice, the funny thing is it seems to be just 'W'

www.facebook.com/pg/bicaswtf/photos/

It does say at the bottom 'This project is supported in part by donors of the LGBT&S Alliance Fund, a fund held at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona'

So perhaps they virtue signal about 'WTF' and then spend it on 'W'.

I remember going on a short 'car maintenence for women' course not long after I'd passed my test 20+ years ago.
It was great fun, the bloke who ran it was brilliant. We all learned what we wanted and had a good laugh.
(It didn't come with many Do's and Don'ts)

WTF indeed!

nauticant · 12/02/2019 17:07

The thing about this stuff is if you imagine something bonkers, it's already happened for real:

www.campusreform.org/?ID=9557

In irony-is-dead news, they actually use the term wokeshop.

AbsintheFriends · 12/02/2019 17:14

I was 100% certain it was a spoof until I clicked on the link and found that they seem to be in earnest.

Good heavens.

Racecardriver · 12/02/2019 17:14

Surely it would have just been easier to say ‘no blokes please’

Hamster00 · 12/02/2019 17:19

Can someone explain "gender creative" to me please? Is that like a 'build your own gender' thing - like a kit? Hmm

GerryblewuptheER · 12/02/2019 17:20

Am I the only one who would stand reading the sign on the door wondering if I could actually go in? Confused

Wtf indeed

AbsintheFriends · 12/02/2019 17:30

Nauticant, that link!

In a “Self Care for Social Justice Advocates” workshop, meanwhile, students are encouraged to attend if they “feel like the more ‘woke’ [they] become, the more stressed [they] are,” exploring “the ways that social advocacy adds to [their] stress and how to more fully integrate ‘rest.’”

Once again, good heavens.
