This is a shocking statistic. And well worth highlighting.

That's bloody frightening

userschmoozer · 06/02/2019 11:55

There are a few studies from different countries that show the same result.

nettie434 · 06/02/2019 11:59

Absolutely frightening Redshoeblueshoe. I knew about the high rates of domestic abuse but that so many should have brain damage! Thanks for link placemats. Even more reason to be incredibly careful about transferring prisoners who identify as women from men’s prisons.

WeRiseUp · 06/02/2019 12:12

So sad. Sad
Women's and girl's skulls are thinner than men, so we are more likely to get concussion than men. We really need sex segregation in sports and prisons for this reason alone, without even bringing in all the other good reasons for it.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/02/2019 12:16

As a particular feminist said on Twitter:

Most murder is boring, pedestrian, even accidental stuff. Somewhere between a third and a half result from too much alcohol. A high proportion are domestic violence “gone wrong”. A blow struck one time too many: an egg-shell skull.

Our eggshell skulls are obviously at fault.

Redshoeblueshoe · 06/02/2019 12:30

Yes I believe she did actually say it was our fault that our skulls are too thin.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 06/02/2019 14:03

I am shocked by this but it does make a horrible sort of sense.
I had a nightmare lodger last year who was a DV victim and I wouldn't be surprised if she had had brain damage. There is a very good chance she will end up in prison one day. This is a small community and I know several people who knew her a few years ago and felt the old her would never have behaved as she did.
Bloody, bloody male violence.

WeRiseUp · 06/02/2019 14:12

It's so fucking awful.

It makes me realise how much the emphasis on psychology and self-improvement is such crap when the brain is so delicate and the scars in the 'mind' from abuse can actually be physical. We need decent rehab.

User383673 · 06/02/2019 14:23

I was just coming here to post this - so awful, and a clear sign that screening for domestic violence is essential.

Yes I believe she did actually say it was our fault that our skulls are too thin.

I don’t believe this is what she’s saying at all. I think she’s using a visceral and easily identifiable image to challenge the widely held although subconscious perception that domestic violence is boring and mundane. I think she’s illustrating that while sensational murders are attention grabbing, what we should really be concerned about is the huge numbers of murders that occur as a result of domestic violence.

I agree with you. I thought it was an effective piece of writing for the reasons you give. I don't think she is remotely saying it is women's fault.

ImTheDamnFoolThatShotHim · 06/02/2019 16:21

Not entirely a surprise. I believe I have damage caused by repeated blows to the head, he usually hit where my hair is so there wouldn't be marks.
Although some connected with the facial areas, loosened teeth, bit through my tongue.
I feel I'm slower mentally, far from stupid but silly things don't make sense, and it's noticeable,
I'm not 'myself' anymore. Not who I used to be I guess.

WeRiseUp · 06/02/2019 16:25

I was under the impression it was the 'domestic violence gone wrong' thing that really pissed people off, since it implies their is a form of domestic violence that can be done right - violence that controls and terrorises, but stops just short of killing her, were it not for that wretched eggshell skull women go around sporting. Hmm

Since the writer John Ozimek is supportive of pornography that depicts taking women to the brink, I hardly think the DV comments would be benign.

I definitely do not think that.

Melroses · 06/02/2019 17:08

No I don't think that is what is being said either. The mundanity of the domestic violence is being used to excuse the resulting murder as accidental.

Melroses · 06/02/2019 17:10

The "eggshell skull" means that what was 'only' mundane violence becomes accidental murder.

Melroses · 06/02/2019 17:11

I expect that some of the women with brain damage from domestic violence may have received it through DV in their childhood too.

Ereshkigal · 06/02/2019 17:15

I definitely do not think that.

No, neither do I. Extremely naive and misguided view of top "feminist writer" Jane Fae, who is certainly no anti violence against women crusader.

FissionChips · 06/02/2019 17:19

I’m not suprised at all.

What could the prison system actually do to help them though? Awareness and understanding of TBI are low and services such as brain injury rehabilitation are few and quite tricky to access.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 06/02/2019 17:43

I don't think the most important message here is about what the prison service should do. It is more about the vital importance of society getting to grips with domestic violence: preventing it, punishing perpetrators, protecting victims.

eurochick · 06/02/2019 17:47

Egg shell skull is a legal concept. It basically means that you take your victim as you find them so it's no get out for the perpetrator to say someone more robust wouldn't have suffered the same injury. It's a phrase that should be helpful for victims.

WeRiseUp · 06/02/2019 17:48

I'm also thinking about asphyxiation and sexual exploitation. Lots of women in prison have also been sexually exploited. Porn is normalising strangulation etc.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 06/02/2019 17:49

No I don't think that is what is being said either. The mundanity of the domestic violence is being used to excuse the resulting murder as accidental.

This was also my interpretation. That domestic violence, which isn't anything worth getting excited about, can become a murder due to women's flimsy skulls.

StealthPolarBear · 06/02/2019 17:54

Bloody hell almost two thirds. So many of these women will need help rather than locking up. And yes some women are bad but I think this illustrates the majority of women prisoners are vulnerable.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 06/02/2019 17:55

I thought the point of that statement was that because women have 'eggshell skulls' the men can quite easily kill them by accident which is therefore not murder but manslaughter as how was he supposed to properly gauge how much she could take when she had this stupid thin skull.

Maybe your interpretation depends on if you know the writer is a major proponent of legalising extreme porn and I believe has quieried why not 16 minimum age to appear.

This person is no friend of women.

WeRiseUp · 06/02/2019 17:55

Yes, mine too. Completely lacking in empathy for the terrified women being murdered by her intimate partner. It came across as flippant, oblivious and oddly smug.
